Good question! The movie grapples with a lot of universal themes and symbols and the answer is probably more philosophical than simply saying it's just one character. If that makes sense, which it probably doesn't.

Never seen it before but I was familiar with LeAnn Rimes's hit song and I knew Piper Perabo from Covert Affairs.

Nymphomaniac Vol 1

Somehow I'd completely forgotten than I'd seen this before, which is weird because it's so unique. Like other mainstream films I've seen that feature explicit sex, there's an a kind of clinical detachment and emotional numbness about the characters that's ultimately quite moving (as well as kinda hot).

It's darkly, almost horribly funny in places, in a way that reminds me of Von Trier's The Idiots. It's got that same documentary vibe yet, at the same time, the structure is quite theatrical. I kept imagining it as a play. The cast is very eclectic -- Hollywood stars, people from EastEnders, European art house actors -- and I wasn't sure where it was set. It seemed to be happening in some timeless European no-man's land, which added to the sense of the characters being somehow lost. Christian Slater and Uma Thurman in particular give really surprising, really powerful performances. I'm not sure I've seen Shia Labeouf in anything before but he's really good too, really funny.

The perfunctory 40th Anniversary screening. I really should simply never watch it again, but the trailer is so damned good it brainwashes me into forgetting how bad the film is. If Percy Rodriguez had ominously narrated the film in the same way as the trailer it probably would have improved it tenfold.​

Has it changed your opinion from your previous viewing?:

I've watched JAWS on YouTube (very bad quality upload) only for the horror moments and I have to say I was a little disappointed, hence my confusion regarding the popularity of this movie.

Hereditary.

I saw it at the cinema on a date, I'd been enticed by the creepy trailer. It was supposed to be going for this Rosemary's Baby/Don't Look Now/Exorcist vibe. I thought it was awful. Pure trash. But not even good scary thrilling trash. It was incredibly slow, the pacing was terrible. Unlike the film it mostly copies Rosemary's Baby which has the most perfect pacing and is a joy to sit through. Hereditary just plods along. It's a small cast but even Toni Collette and Gabriel Byrne don't save it. The plot is a bit flimsy too. After a major thing happens, a death. A gruesome one at that, there is no dealing with police at all. This horror that happened is just accepted as an accident without so much as an interview or anything.

The big reveal at the end was laughable. I mean literally the whole cinema erupted into laughter at was supposed to be the climactic reveal. The director just handled it very badly. The allusions to the occultism were there but they were just not enough, it was clumsily done. The tone just wasn't menacing enough. The paranoia wasn't heightened enough. Yea... I hated it. They should retitle it for DVD and call it Not Enough.
