I noticed in the following season via rewatches on my DVD's that following the sad death of Jim Davis, the Producers beefed up the character of Miss Ellie in relation to JR's shenanigans.

She didn't stand much nonsense out of JR after Jock had died.

So perhaps Miss Ellie did anger the best.

I will never forget her asking Ray to get the shot gun after a reporter dared to knock the door at Southfork looking for news of the helicopter crash involving Bobby & JR. Barbara was excellent in those scenes. It just shows how very well cast & how very well written the original Lorimar produced Dallas was. :)

Even though I don't like him, I'm going to vote for Bobby here. His anger scenes were amazing! At one point during a scene with Cliff, he actually growls, and I found that hilarious! But the real spotlight scene was when he found out about JR sending Pam on the wild goose chase for Mark Graison, and proceeded to try to beat the living hell out of him in the Southfork pool before he was stopped.

I think Katherine Wentworth out did everyone in the anger department. Because she was inherently evil and a psychopath and hated everyone, she was always angry in varying degrees, mostly stark raving lunacy.
Katherine didn't hate everyone. She truly loved her parents, and once she lost them, I think that she went crazy for Bobby because she was unconsciously trying to use Bobby as some way to recreate having a family again. The "inherently" part is stretching it a lot when you consider that she was mostly pretty tame during her first season and actually had a life outside of Bobby since she was not written to be obsessed with him because the plan had only been to keep her for that season. But the Dallas writers changed all of that once they called Morgan Brittany back with a contract for a few seasons starting in 6 (dvd count). A cool female version of JR who works as a reporter and doesn't spend her time whining about love interests or break-ups? No, no, no. The Dallas writers couldn't have a female character like THAT! That's why they changed Katherine into the whole erotomania character in the style of Play Misty for Me. Eventually, she just went from being a character to a plot device in order to provide Bobby/Pam drama. It was truly sad.

It's a real shame the writers decided to take the character of Katherine down that path. I personally believe she had a case of intelligent revenge rather than psychopathic tendencies towards all those around her. Let's see. Out of nowhere she learns she has a half-brother and sister. She goes from having father and mothers undying love and attention to suddenly sharing her mother with others. Father drops dead and Katherine finds herself becoming number 3 in the pecking order behind Cliff and Pam. To rub insult into the wound Katherines learns Rebecca has welcomed Cliff into the bosom that is Wentworth Tool & Die which he nearly bankrupts. Katherine thinks having her wicked way with JR is a means to an end. Katherine my dear. This is JR Ewing, do your homework.

Then a terrible plane crash resulting in the death of her mother. Any thought of having Bobby for herself is squashed when she blurts out to him her true feelings - when drunk. She gets bitch slapped by Bobby again when he announces he is going to marry that slut with a child from that awful Italian. Seriously? Poor Katherine couldn't catch a break. Instead of Katherine going nutty and aiming her car towards Bobby and Pam leading to the death of one of the most important characters - Pam's shoe - it should have been Jenna driving that vehicle.

Katherine should have left Dallas for a little while, regained her composure and began to map out her intelligent revenge scheme.
Exactly. But I honestly think that the writers made her crazy just so that she would die and Pam could inherit her Wentworth stuff and probably more $. Joke was on them, though. Bobby's return from the dead via shower shifted all of the dream season business stuff for Pam. (Remember "The Seahorse" and potential underwater drilling? Lol.) In a way, I sort of liked the crazy Katherine stuff because in a way, it was realistic to see a character who actually has some flaws and did not possess any resilience to recover from her parents' death. Katherine got done in by her own bitterness and depression, and that can happen to people in real life. But ultimately, they shouldn't have made all of that Bobby crap for Katherine. It was just another version of the "evil sister" plot. Maybe it could have worked if Katherine had been a real non-crazy rival for Pam that Bobby was actually interested in, but adding the Jenna dimension and the craziness just turned her into a plot device-character that they thought everyone would hate just because it hurts Pam. Instead of Pam vs. Katherine, it should have been Cliff vs. Katherine (with Pam backing off and giving up her shares to Katherine because she doesn't want to do anything with a Tool and Dye business.) with Katherine winning. They should have just left the Bobby thing out completely and paired Katherine up with JR.

Well said. I always figured Katherine went mad because her mother decided to favor her newfound bastards whom she had previously abandoned. Would drive me mad too.

Rebecca turned out to be quite a piece of work too. Her revenge against JR and the entire Ewing family for Cliff’s suicide attempt was epic hypocrisy. Had she forgotten her son embezzled millions from her company and she rightly fired him and then pretty much disowned him? She was probably pissed her idiotic son fell for JR’s trap. Then she buys a company, gives it to said idiotic son, so he will be as rich and powerful as the Ewings. Talk about enabling. I wonder who was more idiotic. With all her continued ranting and raving and seething hatred, after Pam and Miss Ellie tried reasoning with her many times, her plane crash couldn’t come soon enough.

Speaking of Jenna, once she morphed for the third time into Priscilla Presley, one episode of her was one too many. I remember my mother laughing every time Presley was on screen because she thought Presley was an awful actress. Jenna was always miserable, argumentative and combative (“I will not be a kept woman!”), and I couldn’t understand why a man like Bobby Ewing would have fallen for her in the first place, much less have such a long history with her.

I really can’t conclude who did angry the best.
I hate Rebecca so much. She just packed up and left for Dallas just because Pam said, "Well, how about Dallas?" She didn't even stop to think that Katherine probably needed her in New York for awhile right after, I dunno, HER FATHER DIED! She didn't even leave their old mansion in Houston to Katherine, but Pam gets Rebecca's brand new house from Dallas after Mommy dearest croaks. Add the inheritance nonsense and how she basically caused Cliff's attempted suicide by ripping his heart out, and Rebecca Wenchworth really gets no mercy from me.

So I wasn't the only one to notice the slight change in Miss Ellie's demeanor and I for one absolutely loved it. I may have my real-life timing out but it was clear the death of Jim Davis changed the thought processes of the writers and producers. Off screen everyone must have felt the loss of Jim but on-screen they cleverly beefed up Miss Ellie and created one of best story arcs (the contest for Ewing Oil) in Dallas history. I think the death of Jim and ultimately Jock was the best I've ever seen on television regarding the death of a beloved actor/character. Great respect was shown.

If the writers hadn't so hastily disposed of Rebecca I think delving deeper into Rebecca's psych would have made for more interesting viewing, especially if the writers had created a threesome between Clayton, Miss Ellie and Rebecca...and no I'm not talking about that other threesome on TNT Dallas...get your minds out of the gutter soapchaters. :p

For a brief time in Dallas another more powerful family was emerging with Pam, Mark, Cliff, Afton, Rebecca and Katherine. It was subtle for all the world to see that the Ewing family was beginning to fracture while the awesome foursome (Pam, Mark, Cliff & Afton) had the makings of a powerful bunch, ready to inflict some damage JR's way if needed. All this without taking the focus off the Ewing family. Clever, clever writing. But then Rebecca was knocked off, followed soon after by whacky Katherine, taking Bobby with her. Only for everything to get screwed up by telling us it was all a dream :crazyme:

If they wanted a family feud, expanding the other family like this makes a lot more sense than the so-called "Barnes-Ewing feud" that was mostly just a JR and Cliff feud due to everyone else dying or leaving and Pam never being able to really go against the Ewings because of Bobby and her connection to the rest of them. But if she had been with Mark, that could have changed things...

What's funny is as the years and multiple viewings of Dallas has transpired I have a fondness for Mark. He just grows on me with each viewing. I know others have/had issues with Mark but he is the one guy that could easily have stood up to Bobby and JR without feeling intimidated. Another character dealt an awful blow by the writers.

Like the scene where he punched JR. I can't remember if he said this, but I think it was said that Mark wouldn't be afraid to really let loose on JR, because unlike Bobby, he wasn't JR's brother!

I vote for Bobby as the best "anger-doer" (or whatever). I love that second fight in the pool from Season 10 after Bobby slowly deduces that J.R. was behind the Lisa Alden affaire. The look in J.R.´s eyes is priceless...

I'd say J.R. did anger the best, primarily because we didn't see it all that often. When one his schemes didn't work out, he usually found another way around it but there were times when he was truly furious and it was wonderful to watch. Like this scene when Sue Ellen returned to Southfork shortly after Bobby died:

That's a good question. If that wasn't a case of a parent rewarding bad behavior, nothing was. What a waste of money. Can you imagine how Katherine felt when her termite of a brother gets a 200 or 300 million dollar company as a reward for trying to kill himself?

Cliff could be incredibly stupid as well. Wouldn't anyone else have sold the company, taken the several hundred million dollars and moved to a different state where he could have pursued whatever he wanted instead of wasting his life trying to to compete with the Ewings when he didn't even have any experience in the oil business? Bobby and JR were taught by Jock. Cliff was taught that you found oil by...smelling it 5,000 feet under the ground. Brilliant. Of course he did have Pam's help, and with her vast experience working in department stores, surely that would make things even.

Really, they all did anger well. But then rage is not the toughest kind of acting to do, even though it seems to be what impresses everybody.

Nobody did anger better than those Barnes siblings. Especially Cliff when he was drunk:

what on earth is going on with her hair as she turns around? Did the slapping motion jar it forward? Did it happen over the course of dozens of takes? Is JR's suit different or is it just the lighting? Is it actually her hair? Is it actually Pam that's turning around?

Turning her head quickly made it fall over her face and then turning back around made it go back into place.

I'd like to know why you rarely see anyone slap anyone on TV shows today? Has our society gotten so weak that people can't even handle seeing a slap? It's fiction! So why should it be a problem?

but it's like the top part completely flopped down, like the structure broke or something. It looks weird! I would have imagined the level of hairspray they were using in those days would keep one's hair in place in a high-speed car wreck let alone being on the giving end of a moderately vigorous slap to the face. Was it some kind of extensions or hairpiece?

(note that, despite my namesake's father's fabulously fluffy 'do, I know almost nothing about styling hair)
