According to GRRM, the main goal is the iron throne. He didn't want the final big battle to be against the walkers. The big fight is against Cercei. So I'm sure Jon and Daenerys still have the chance to become heroic saviours of the day.

Fan theory why it had to be Arya who would kill The Night King:
Only someone unknown to the Night King will be able to kill him. He is aware the only way to defeat the dead is to kill him, he wouldn't allow that to happen by risking his safety. He parks dragon outside the Gods' Wood, he only intervenes in the battle when dragons are torching his dead bois to death and opts to surround Jon Snow with wights rather than face him in single combat.
The Night King has never seen Arya Stark. She is no one to him. During her time with the Faceless Men, Arya trained to become "no one."
No one can kill the Night King other than Azor Ahai, and if Azhor Ahai reborn does not kill him, no one will. No one did.
This is why Jaquen gave Arya that coin; not to turn her into some faceless assassin to kill Cersei. It's why they trained her, it's her entire purpose. Stop he who has cheated death with magic. Who has stolen from the God of Death over and over, whose very existence is an affront to death, because he is undying, and he robs the many faced god. put right that which the others have wronged.
Just like the Lord of Light brought Beric back to life several times; to save Arya's life. The Lord of Light and the God of Death shared a common goal.
This is also why Bran Stark gave Arya the Valyrian steel dagger. As the three-eyed raven, he had seen the chain of events. He knew that knife would be used to kill the Night King. He also knew the exact location and time it would happen. That's why he offered to be bait in that exact location to lure the Night King there. Arya knew where he'd be, and she had the correct weapon. The servers of the God of Death had trained her to become "no one" and now she was ready for her life's mission.

What's so surprising or controversial about the fact that she did it? Even from the little I've seen I understood that this character was obviously supposed to be a game changer.
From the negative comments I've read online, it's mostly men angry that Jon didn't kill the Night King. I sense misogyny behind it, cause the same people are annoyed that "women are taking over the series" and that GoT has become "politically correct" etc.

Taking over? These strong female characters have been there from the very beginning (I hated Melissandre or what's her name, she was so OTT).
Many of the male characters (from what I've seen) were weak, clueless or psychopaths. I think Jamie Lannister was the most interesting male character? Is he still alive?

Well, the criticism is from more than some men who don't want a woman doing it. Many if not most of GoT readers and viewers have been gung-ho supporters of Daenerys for years, who,in case you missed it, happens to be a woman. As for Jon Snow, in the books, and even in the show, there have been signs and portents about Jon Snow being brought back to life for a reason; if that reason is simple political intrigue, it is as bad as the LOST frozen donkey wheel. I think Arya is a great choice for the surprise factor, but if they really had planned it for three years, they should have planned their whole show accordingly, not just that scene. If GRRM ever finishes his books, he will resolve whether it was the plan for Arya all along (and I am sure if it is he will have more things pointing to it than the show), or it was Benioff and Weiss stunt episode plotting in action.

Where did he say that? Game of Thrones is the HBO title. The book series is A Song of Ice and Fire
I dunno where it was, didn't save the link. But I read it earlier this week. That he was more interested in ruling, the politics, than in the mystical creatures battle.
I can't speak for them or their illogic reasoning. But there's a reason why the nickname "Mary Sue" trended on Twitter.

As I said above, I can't see their point of view because I don't see the logic. But yes, many spewed their hatred on Twitter after episode 3.
Jaime Lannister is still alive, yes. And he's my favorite character on the show. I like his complicated family history and how he was taught to be nothing but loyal. He never got the credit he deserved for killing the mad king who was gonna burn down King's Landing and the entire population. He is both good and bad. But has recently become almost heroic thanks to the good influence of Brienne. I also love his scenes with Tyrion.
