Did Katherine Wentworth have any redeeming qualities?

I thought Katherine was wasted and there were missed opportunities. She had her life turned upside down after her father's death. First finding out that her mother had children from a never before known first husband, then Cliff becomes part of her father's company and then her mother dies fighting Cliff's war against the Ewings and finally in Rebecca's will is made part owner of a company that should be completely hers. So I understood Katherine's anger.

Her obsession with Bobby was silly though.

I agree. To me a good resolve would have been JR using her to fight Pam and Cliff in court where it turns out her father’s will prevented them from inheriting anything. He helps her to bankrupt the two of them and with an agreement to buy it all from her for penny’s on the dollar. She returns sure she’s got a pardon only to be arrested and sent to prison. That would have wrapped up everything nicely imo.

Katherine was less of a rounded character and more of a plot device to add to the drama of season 6 and 7. However, imho, Morgan Brittany brought an extra something to Katherine that made her an intriguing woman. For me, the screen lit up when she was in the scene. I would have loved to have seen Katherine developed so we could learn more about her. When first introduced she was a reporter, but then her main and only occupation was pining after Bobby. So we never got to see any other qualities, redeeming or not. I'll just have to settle for that beautiful mane of hair and those gorgeous eyes.:love4:

I'm not sure if anyone posted this before, but I found this funny fan video about Katherine on Youtube.

I remembered a couple more: She had to stand that poor excuse of a saloon singer that was Afton and her clairvoyant comments, and also her half-brother Cliff, who could become quite an unnerving termite more often than not (and he didn´t need to sing!).

I appreciated her singlemindedness. Morgan Brittany has the most expressive eyes this side of Old Hollywood. Near the end of the '82-'83 season, her pure hatred of J.R. and Bobby was conveyed almost without words. Her enmity toward Cliff was only matched by J.R.

Yes that would have been a better scenerio than what they came up with. Chasing after Bobby seemed silly to me. I can deal with her bedding JR (we would later meet their child on Dallas TNT years later).

Morgan Brittany was wasted which is a shame.

No way are her eyes more expressive than Miss Gray's @Ray&Donna :danc:

I can also do without any love child of Katherine and JR. Please stop ruining my life and memories!

I can empathize with Katherine. She thought she was an only child and sole heir to the Wentworth fortune in her generation, and she clearly had trouble with the emotional side of relationships with men. Bobby rejected her while Pam and Cliff got mother's attention more while Katherine's late father never knew about them, while Rebecca then died because of the Battle for Ewing Oil. Combine these and Katherine not letting go of her bitterness, anger and hate, and you get a monster.

Had Pam decided not to look for her mother, I'm sure Katherine would have turned out mostly okay.

Rebecca had to be one off the most monstrous characters ever in Dallas. Cliff is the result of her abandoning him when he was 5 and leaving him in the care of an alcoholic father. Katherine is the result of her not abandoning a child and she's more screwed up than Cliff! Somehow Pam turned out alright, leading me to deduce that abandoning Pam and Cliff and leaving them in the care of an alcoholic father wasn't the worst thing she ever did; it was the second worst. Coming back to them and bringing Katherine with her was the worst thing she ever did!

Rebecca is a monster - a total sociopath. How she can abandon her children to a violent drunk like Digger and never look back is beyond me. She’s unredeemable, and I thought it was ridiculous that Pam and Cliff forgave her.

I wish Katherine had looked into Rebecca’s marital status when she married Herbert Wentworth (Rebecca never divorced Digger). Katherine could have brought a lawsuit to keep all the Wentworth assets.

You don't have to be a sociopath to leave your kids -- Rebecca herself was a child, and we just don't know how bad things got with Digger …. but we have an idea.

Digger murdered Hutch McKinney right in front of Rebecca's eyes. If that's not the last straw, then what is??

Should she have left her children? I agree she shouldn't have, but many people have done that without being a monster or a sociopath.

Even though I have always been pro-Pam, I totally think Pam ruined Katherine’s life. Pam actually couldn’t understand why Katherine was enraged at Cliff! He ruined Katherine’s father’s company, he got Rebecca killed, etc., and Pam is totally dense about the whole thing. Katherine has every right to never want to see Cliff or Pam ever again!

I would have liked to have found out, at least in Dallas TNT, that Herbert’s will protected Katherine and thus through court she was able to wrestle everything away from Pam and Cliff - a part of JR’s masterpiece.

I'm amazed that people say things like "Cliff got Rebecca killed" or "It was JR's fault that Rebecca died." I'd like to know this: Who forced Rebecca to get on that plane? Did Rebecca not have free will? She was on her way to get involved in a business deal that wasn't even her deal; she had no need whatsoever to go!

She got on that plane because of her own vengeful, sadistic nature. This is a woman who once said: "Since the only way to your heart is through your company, I plan to do everything in my power to make that company bleed." This is the same woman who abandoned a 5 year old son and an infant daughter and left them in the care of an alcoholic. When she later became wealthy she never even went looking for them. She allowed her own children to believe she was dead. Pam came looking for her and when Pam found her, Rebecca looked her right in the eyes and said that she wasn't her mother, that Pam was mistaken. Pam couldn't understand why Cliff wanted to have nothing to do with this woman!

Rebecca was a nosy, vengeful woman who chose to get on that plane of her own free will. She was on her way to "make that company bleed." That's the type of hateful pursuit she chose to get involved in. You live by the sword, you die by the sword.

Cliff didn't make her get on that plane and JR didn't even want her on that plane. Rebecca wanted to be on that plane, so if you're looking for motive, that's it. That is the reason Rebecca was on that plane. If you're looking for the cause of her death, it was pilot error, pure and simple as it sounds. One plane collided with another and that's why Rebecca died.

Leaving your children behind with a murderer/drunk does qualify you as a monster in my eyes.

As James from London once noted, Rebecca is a very underwritten character, who was imbued with gravitas by Priscilla Pointer. We know that she was apparently very young when she married, and that she was Digger's second choice after losing Miss Ellie to Jock, but we are not completely privy to her motives outside of making up for lost time with Pam and Cliff. Did Katherine have an unnatural attachment to her father that led her relationships with men to be incredibly self-destructive, or was Rebecca an unloving mother to her "only" child?

Yes, and Katherine was under-written as well -- maybe that was genetic? Morgan Brittany did what she could with the role, and the character popped-up in the series' best era, but she was written like a stock psycho.

Even Lady Jessica was better fleshed-out.
