I have so much to say. I don't really even know where to begin. I appreciate any and all who want to talk about him whether you love him or dislike him. I think you all know that I am a Bowie Freak and yes I call myself that as millions of Bowie fans around the world do.

I love his voice, his song writing, his saxophone playing and so much more.

His 1980's Romantic era is my least favorite for his music. I don't even own the album Modern Love. Although he sure did look mighty fine in the 80's! I do love his album from 1980 Scary Monsters.

I am going to start off with my favorite the Berlin Era which brought us the albums Low, Heroes and Lodger. I won't go in to too much detail right now. The Thin White Duke was his darkest era and in 1976 he was close to death...living on milk, peppers and cocaine. He decided to move to Germany where he shared an apartment with Iggy Pop. He was able to kick his habit. He called Brian Eno, Robert Fripp as musicians for creating his music in Germany with Tony Visconti producing. They worked out of a studio 500 feet from the Berlin Wall and were watched by the guards who used binoculars to keep an eye on them.........well I could go on and on...here are a few of his songs from this era that I love.

I like to post live versions as much as I can but sometimes it doesn't even sound like the song.

Sound and Vision

Joe the Lion ~ This was written and recorded in the studio in less than an hour.

Look Back In Anger

I will stop for now just for now!.....I can go on about Bowie Forever and Ever!

I love your passion for Bowie and even you objectivity in not favoring for his Romantic era. Do you like his Ziggy Stardust era?

BTW, what is your view of the Blackstar album and the song Lazarus? I always get teary-eyed while watching that but I do like it a lot.

Hi Michelle!

Do you like his Ziggy Stardust era?
Oh yes another one of my favorites eras that I will go into more detail soon. I could stay in this thread and never come out.

Did you know..........

Before he died he fulfilled his life long dream of becoming a play write it was based on the book and the movie he starred in The Man Who Fell to Earth. The Play was called Lazarus.

I think he was brilliant in bringing us his final album and paying his last homage to Major Tom...this video is very cult like and imo Major Tom had a huge cult like following from Space Oddity to Ashes to Ashes and then his final Blackstar song.

So this is my fav song and video from that album

It's a heartbreaking album and it's very hard for me to listen to it.

Yes! A Bowie thread!

His 1980's Romantic era is my least favorite for his music. I don't even own the album Modern Love.
I didn’t realise this. Is this the same album as LETS DANCE with China girl and Putting Out The Fire? Or am I completely mixed up?

The Thin White Duke was his darkest era and in 1976 he was close to death...living on milk, peppers and cocaine.
He was lucky to survive through his addiction and thank goodness he did.

I read that when Iggy heard of Davids passing he wrote this on Twitter – “David’s friendship was the light of my life. I never met such a brilliant person. He was the best there is.”

He called Brian Eno, Robert Fripp as musicians for creating his music in Germany with Tony Visconti producing. They worked out of a studio 500 feet from the Berlin Wall and were watched by the guards who used binoculars to keep an eye on them..
Wow, what an experience that must have been.

I am still discovering how many collaborations David Bowie did with other artists and recently I've been addicted to watching this video.

Wake Up - Arcade Fire & David Bowie

I love watching the great time and sheer passion all the musicians are putting into this performance and Bowie looked to be having the time of his life.

I love that you mentioned this song and brought up Iggy. This was co - written by Bowie and Iggy in Berlin. It was actually a song for Iggy to record and not Bowie. Bowie decided to re-record it for Let's Dance. When I said his romantic era was my least favorite that doesn't mean that I didn't like any of it...there was a lot to love about him in that era.

Iggy's version and I have always found Iggy to be quite the character. I don't think I have ever seen him fully dressed in a live video.

I read that when Iggy heard of Davids passing he wrote this on Twitter – “David’s friendship was the light of my life. I never met such a brilliant person. He was the best there is.”
So many musicians loved Bowie it was amazing. Iggy said of Bowie to that he helped to resurrect his career. I also found it funny that Iggy said that they used to watch Starsky and Hutch together. I love that show. :tv2:

I am still discovering how many collaborations David Bowie did with other artists and recently I've been addicted to watching this video.

Wake Up - Arcade Fire & David Bowie
He collaborated and championed so many artists. I think that is why he was so loved. I love Arcade Fire and that video is awesome. I said in my first post I like to post his live performances because for me at least they are the most fun....he looks like he is having the time of his life.

Bowie wrote this song Pretty Pink Rose for Adrian Belew and they performed it together. Have you seen this one? I love how Bowie is smiling and laughing.

I am also very excited I pre-ordered A Conversation Piece :j1:

A new five-disc David Bowie box called Conversation Piece will trace his early years through home demos, radio sessions and rare studio recordings.

The set, due on Nov. 15, includes 12 previously unreleased tracks and a new mix of the Space Oddity album; a track listing of the extras is below. You can also listen to "Conversation Piece (2019 Mix)" below.

Conversation Piece arrives as both the Space Oddity album and single reach their 50th anniversaries. Producer and collaborator Tony Visconti personally oversaw the 2019 mix.

"It was so much fun to find hidden gems of musicianship with more time to mix the second time around," Visconti said in a news release. Along the way, he said they rediscovered "a guitar twiddle here, a trombone blast there, Marc Bolan’s voice in a group choir and more detail in general that we overlooked all those years ago when the label gave us a week at the most to mix this album. And in the details, you will find 22-year-old David Bowie, who would soon take the world by storm."

A 120-page hardback book accompanies Conversation Piece, and features images of memorabilia from the personal collection of Bowie's late former manager Ken Pitt and the David Bowie Archive. The sleeve notes were written by Bowie experts Mark Adams, Tris Penna, and Kevin Cann; there are additional contributions from Bowie's lifelong friend George Underwood, Visconti and others.

The 2019 mix of Space Oddity will also be released separately.

David Bowie's 'Conversation Piece' Previously Unreleased Tracks
“April's Tooth of Gold”
“The Reverend Raymond Brown (Attends The Garden Fête on Thatchwick Green)”
“When I’m Five”
“Animal Farm”
“Space Oddity” (Version 2, with John “Hutch” Hutchinson)
“Conversation Piece”
“Jerusalem”
“Hole In The Ground” (with George Underwood)
“Space Oddity” (Morgan Studios Version – Alternative Take, with Hutchinson)
“Letter To Hermione” (Early Mix)
“Janine” (Early Mix)
“An Occasional Dream” (Early Mix)

:jump3:

I do hope you don't wait for me to post. I would love hearing everyone's take on Bowie or just posting the songs you love!

I know @Michelle Stevens that your favorite song is Suffragette City

Iman's favorite songs were Heroes and Suffragette City she said that her and Lexi loved to get up and dance to SC. :danc:

and my favorite is Heroes and Long Lashes is Life on Mars. There was someone that wanted me to start this thread...I won't tag him because he is so busy but maybe if he reads this he might share some of his favorite songs? :byee:

He wrote this for the B side of Starman in 1972 if you already didn't know that and my fascination with Bowie is showing thru again. :lolo:

Where I live this is the most played song on the radio.

Here you go! There are better sounding versions of this on youtube but I love to watch him live :d1:

Do you have other favorites Michelle and I will try not to explain them all. :giggle:

That is a great interview with Iggy. He is so funny!

Here is the Serious Moonlight tour that I was at the one is in Montreal. I went to see him in Syracuse. I have it on DVD.

Sometime when you all have time take a look if you want too.

Well that didn't work out. I can't find this one on youtube. But you can look it up song by song.

This is his Glass Spider Tour in 1987 again in Montreal....I love this tour it's one of my favorites to watch on youtube.

Again if you ever have the time and inclination to watch....

Iggy, like Bowie is such a pioneer.

Another song I really liked when it came out was I'm Afraid of Americans in 1997.

Bowie is pretty much like The Killers for me when it comes to choosing a favourite.

On the two occasions we did his top ten I think I had LIFE ON MARS once and SPACE ODDITY the second time. If I was to do a top ten today, BLACKSTAR would be number one, with ALADDIN SANE as number two and NEVER GET OLD would be my number three.

I think Bowie's influence on the Killer is why I like them so much. I can hear Bowie's influence on Brandon.

Oh my gosh I love all these songs. Great choices Ome.

I can tell you a story about Life On Mars.....:D

In 1969 Bowie fell in love with Hermione Farthington. She broke his heart. He wrote this song for her. She is the girl with the mousy hair. He also wrote this love letter to her.

Here it is.

BLACKSTAR

Fantastic! I love when I hear people talk about and love his last album. Goodbye Major Tom. :love7:

I love that one too! I will most likely say this about every song that is posted here. :d1:

I just added that to my iphone collection. I'm Afraid of Americans has such a cool sound to it. Bowie but very 1990's. It was the last song I remember in his lifetime that got major play on Top 40 stations.

This is the very first Bowie song I heard that started me on my journey with David Bowie who I have loved over 2/3's of my life.

Classic, one of his best! I can't remember what was my first Bowie song that I remembered. It could be Rebel, Rebel. Was this at the end of his glam rock stage? 1974?

They still play him on the radio all the time especially one my favortie rock stations. I like to listen to the radio when I am driving sometimes a CD but I rarely listen to the radio at home.

You do know a lot about Bowie Michelle!!

Rebel Rebel was the very last song he recorded during his glam rock period and it's on the album Diamond Dogs. Another one of my favorite albums.

Diamond Dogs! :D

Iggy's version .
Thats a good version too, its such a fab song.

I love hearing about everyday things like these. Can you just imagine them sitting on a sofa together watching this ... Lol!

He collaborated and championed so many artists.
Yes, he did and I am still discovering just how many, it shows how passionate he was about music and the respect he had for other musicians.

I love Arcade Fire and that video is awesome.
I've watched that video so many times and I am always surprised to see the audience sat down and want to shout "what the heck are you doing? get up! this is brilliant!" but by the end of the song they're eventually on their feet.

Have you ever seen this?
It was at Bowie's 50th and he was with Robert Smith performing The Last Thing You Should Do and Quicksand . Its magical.

and here is a short video of Robert Smith talking about the influence David Bowie had on him

I saw this October interview with Iggy Pop and David Bowie came up.
Thats a good clip Michelle he really is a character - "tried to smoke spiders-webs" - :lmao: what a great sense of humour he has and I can see why he and Bowie clicked.

Have you ever seen this?

Yes it's fantastic! I was a huge fan of the Cure before I knew they were influenced by Bowie. I read that that they got a lot of inspiration from his Low album as did many other artists.

Have you heard this one? You probably have........it's so much like Bowie!

and here is a short video of Robert Smith talking about the influence David Bowie had on him
Great find LL........I hadn't seen that one yet thank you! Love it.

Yesterday I finally watched a BBC documentary on Bowie's very early years from 1965 thru 1973 and the death of Ziggy Stardust...it's on showtime right now. Not sure if anyone can get it? It was awesome. I highly recommend it to Bowie fans. It even has Bowie speaking on it with voice overs so I know that the parts he is talking about are true. I tend to find a lot of false things about Bowie on the internet and some horrible documentaries.

Here is the trailer

I thought that maybe, Modern Love was the title of the Lets Dance Album in the US
No it's just me saying it wrong..........

Thats a good version too, its such a fab song.
When I first heard this song I thought he was singing...........and Iggy played guitar.........:shy::giggle:

I've watched that video so many times and I am always surprised to see the audience sat down and want to shout "what the heck are you doing? get up! this is brilliant!" but by the end of the song they're eventually on their feet.
It's a truly great song and I get up and dance. :spinning:

This is new to me and its great to see him having a great time, so full of energy. Made me really smile :D
I love him live...........:D glad I could introduce you too something new.:dance::dance::dance:

I forget to say there is a Bowie Biopic coming out in April 2020. I will not watch it. I hated how they massacred Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. Also Duncan posted that they didn't and won't get the rights to use his music. No one can play Bowie but Bowie!

I've still got to go back and read up on this, however, I wanted to jump in here and let @That Bowie Girl know that back in July 2018 we had an interesting look at something I'm sure you'll enjoy reading.
That is fantastic with all those covers Ome. I will go back and check it out more. Now this makes me wonder what band or musician's music is the most covered by other artists....I will see if I can look that up.

I just love this gif you posted from the movie The Hunger

I love the new Bowie Icon :bowing

:yep::yep::yep:

EDIT: I looked it up duh me it's the Beatles with the most covered songs!
