Now this makes me wonder what band or musician's music is the most covered by other artists....I will see if I can look that up.

There are very few cover songs I like that were Bowie's. I love that top ten and seeing how many artists have covered him but for me it's for some reason hard to listen to his covers when I can listen to him.......he is my favorite if you didn't know that

I get that, I really do. I'm the same with quite a few artists. There are certain songs that simply sound awful when covered by anyone, but there are also some that I love when they take a different spin on it and then there are some that I love, simply because I think they did the original some justice. For example, I really do enjoy Jessica Lange's "Life on Mars" cover that she did in the AHS.

So with that in mind, what I'm asking is, out of all the songs we found, which would you pick out as better than the rest. Though, again, no rush, I'm simply curious.

This is how my list came out from the members list and Fame by the Killers is still my number one. I wasn't a fan of most of the covers posted but if they like them that is always good with me. We are all different in our music choices.

I found one that was posted on youtube yesterday from the new box set Conversation Piece. This was released November 15th. Mine is on it's way.

Not many views or comments yet but I agree there are parts to this song where he sounds like Bob Dylan.

I wasn't a fan of most of the covers

While in most cases I much prefer the original (unless I hear the cover first, that can tip the scales), however what I do like is how some covers can re-ignite someone's interest in the artist, or in some cases, find more fans digging into the back catalogue of the original artists.

I agree with you on this. I find it fascinating to know why or how someone became a fan of a certain singer or band. I do the same with covers... I will go back and listen to the original to see which I like best if I don't know the artist.

Another thing that is fascinating in it's own way was after Bowie died how many people heard the tributes etc and decided to check out his and other musicians that have died too.

My Box set of Conversation Piece arrived yesterday and it's brilliant! The binder and the book are fantastic with a white background and black writing. The book has all kinds of things about Bowie, things written by Bowie and then the songs listed and the lyrics. I am super excited to dig into this. I will try and get a picture posted soon.

I found one that was posted on youtube yesterday from the new box set Conversation Piece. This was released November 15th.

Its amazing when we get to hear something which is new (to us), especially when I thought 'thats it' ... no new songs ever. Hearing this gave me the same feeling of awe at hearing George Michael's new song. Its sort of comforting to unexpectedly hear their voices again.

I agree there are parts to this song where he sounds like Bob Dylan.

I can hear this too and I liked the whistling and the little cough at the beginning it made it feel intimate. Its also one of those songs which shows what a master David Bowie was at poetry.

I nominated it fairly recently in the top-ten thread and have been transfixed listening to it. Its a very different song to his later work and I find it incredibly sad, atmospheric and clever all at the same time.

I haven't listened to the the CD's yet. I might get a smudge on them from my bandaide and this week might get too busy and I want plenty of time to enjoy it all....... but I do agree it's a lovely song and have you heard his re-recording of it for Heathen's in 2002? I compare them and still haven't decided which I like better.

Like his seven years in Tibet when he studied Buddhism which brought us this song.

and he talks about it a bit here in an interview with Rosie.........I was surprised to find out that both him and Iman were great friends of hers. I love learning things like this.

Yes, I have heard this before and it does sound smoother and more polished. I like them both, although the earlier recording just nudges it for me because I think it has a more simple and innocent sound, which reflects the words being sung .... just my own personal taste

He experienced so many different things, he must’ve had endless energy and a real curiosity, he was also always willing to learn and deepen his knowledge.

I’ve been trying to find a clip of David Bowie singing live at a benefit concert for The Bridge School (organised by Nell Young) . You might not remember it, I posted it on the old forum just after David had passed. I can find plenty of clips but not the original one I posted. It showed the some of the children from that school sat in the audience enjoying his music, it really touched me. If I find it I will post it one here.

I love this interview, it shows how articulate, honest and wise he was. He was also right about how the internet (considering this was way back in 1999) would change things.

We do love Bowie but we don't go overboard in collecting things besides his music and there are still some books I want to read. That would be a second copy so I could resist but I don't think I am going to do it. One is enough.

I think I do this because there are so many different stories out there about him and I like to hear him talk about them rather than read and not be sure if they are true or not. I think I worded my first post wrong. I should have said it's my undiscovered period about him. I haven't dug deep into the period in his life. For me I think it sounded like he had gone into commercial pop. But I do like his songs in the 80's. I just never bought that one album why I don't know. Maybe because some of them were overplayed on the radio? Other than that he looked fabulous and more fit than he did as the Thin White Duke. I guess that is an obvious change with him getting off the cocaine. His tours in the 80's were also favorites of mine. Especially the Glass Spider tour.

I am sure there are songs of his that weren't favorites of mine. But ask me if I could name them? No I can't

I prefer to hear interviews too, rather than rely on someone reporting the information via the written word, its the most reliable way to get the true facts.

I want to share this amazing picture of him. He was such a beautiful man. I just love his fashion!

He wore his clothes with that unique Bowie attitude and confidence, as we know he could literally wear anything and get away with it. I enjoyed his story in the interview I posted, about meeting Tony Blair and how he wore a smart suit along with a pair of stilettos.


Also his shoe and boot collection must have had an impact and inspired the fashion industry...

How did he manage to walk (never mind dance) in high wedges? and then there was all his different hairstyles,

oh and I liked him in a scarf...

@That Bowie Girl, do you have any favorites of Bowie's during the 2000's and 2010's? This era of Bowie is the most unknown to me. Any recommendations from Heathen, Reality, The Next Day, and Blackstar? I am familiar with the songs Blackstar and Lazarus as you know and did enjoy them.
