I like most of the scoring they use. The soaps don't seem to use half as much now and it makes it boring I think.

I like the scoring from the 1st year. You can feel the 90's spirit in it. A lot of deep, sensual sax. From the second year show became darker, so did the music.

Starting from the second year, SuBe started slowly turning into cartonish show although it was still interesting. They introduced too much supernatural stuff, like truth serum or some substance that makes people be uncounctious and not remember a thing from a certain period in their life.
If they had invented something like that on "Dynasty", Blake wouldn't have had an accident to go through amnesia stuff because Alexis would have used that magic thing on him a million times.

And.... After a brief detour to Cabot Cove, I am back in Sunset Beach.

I've watched a good few episodes today. Derek is still crazy and has had Ben shipped off to a morgue for cremation. Sadly he's met a worse fate than that. He's at the morgue but unfortunately he's been rescued by a woman obsessed with romance novels. It's I guess some kind of take on Misery. She's like a young slim, blonde Cathy Bates and she's obsessed with Ben, as she thinks he's a character from a novel she's just read named Steel. It's nuts. It's stupid and very campy and I love it. Also the music theme they are using for this plot, is very, very like one of the main themes from ABC's Revenge. It's very mysteriouso!

Meanwhile Derek is being examined by Dr Tyus and has a mad thought that he cant let the Dr examine him as he'll find out he's not Ben as his injuries don't match Ben's. So... He decides he should murder him! Luckily he then changes his mind and realises that's a stupid idea. You cant just kill everyone you meet Derek! Now he's home with Meg, her parents are looking for a house to buy in Sunset Beach. Derek is planning a weekend away with Meg... To kill her no doubt. I'm so bored of serial killer Derek. I think I'm done with this plot.

Meg's sister Sarah is in town and has Casey as her personal bodyguard to ward off the reporters that are hounding her after the story broke about her affair with Congressman Blythe. Melinda Fall has been hounding Sarah too trying to record their conversations so she can sell a story. This storyline is so of it's time!

Virginia accidentally let slip to Michael that she spoke to Vanessa before she left town. Michael get's angry and accuses her of not telling him because she didn't want him to find her. Virginia says no, she told her that Michael loved her and was going to propose. She says that Vanessa told her that she didn't love Michael... She wouldn't have married him.
Leaving Michael heart broken and the door open for Virginia to work her magic on him.

Sadly Vanessa didn't actually leave town! She's just hiding out at Dr Tyus' apartment. And who should live in the very same building? Mrs Moreau the voodoo high priestess of Ebil! And Vanessa recognises something, but she doesn't know what. She took a call from her by accident before Virginia put the curse on her.

We now have the Adam Carrington in Sunset Beach as AJ! He's set his whispering heart on seducing Olivia Richards, but Gregory is having none of it!

Now... On I go on to episode 356!

It's funny that Olivia has been telling AJ all about her baby and the fact that she doesn't believe that her baby was stillborn and that she wants to find out what happened to it. Funny because Olivia was involved in a plot which saw AJ's son Cole stolen from Elaine and thus from AJ way back in the '70s. I wonder when she's going to bring that up?

The morgue story was a hoot

Our soaps love to drag out evil twin stories for an eternity. I guess because villains are easier to write than people with a few basic failings

I remember Casey and Sarah like it was yesterday, of course I was still into soaps at this point, I would soon go off them for an extended break

Oh... Hold up! Stop the press! The shit is hitting the proverbial fan!

So... Olivia has decided that if she is to get close to AJ she has to come clean in her involvement in Cole's kidnapping in the '70s. So she is at Bette's where she's called Cole to speak to him. She's about to confess that she was the nurse that Del Douglas hired to steal the baby away from the hospital after Elaine gave birth. Well she's started to confess this but it's Sunset Beach so this confession could go on for a week or so or not even happen at all.

Meanwhile, Gregory's company The Liberty Group is involved in developing beach front properties, however, he's just discovered that that land is owned by none other than AJ Deschanel under an alias. AJ is now at Gregory's to discuss a deal over the land but Gregory has other things on his mind. Knowing that Olivia and AJ are getting romantically involved he's decided to inform AJ about the goings on that kept his son Cole away from him all these years and about Olivia's involvement in it all.

Actual footage of me in bed right now watching Sunset Beach enjoying all this tea...

The morgue story is so funny because the set that it takes place in is so tiny. It's like this little corner somewhere in the studio.
Ben/Derek must have been exhausting for the actor playing him. He's very heavily featured in all or most episodes.

I am enjoying Casey and Sarah, in fact I am liking Casey the most I ever have with story and it's not even that great a story. The two actors just have chemistry I think. And Sarah is a breath of fresh air compared to goody two shoes Meg. I am sure back in the day I felt the total opposite as I do now, which is funny.

after the story broke about her affair with Congressman Blythe.
Oh, I had forgotten that little detail. Bill Clinton's surname at birth was Blythe (he was adopted by a stepfather and took the Clinton last name). As if they needed to hit us over the head with the parody any harder.

Have you aged since then? Like a voodoo priestess?
Has not aged a day. Rumor has it, the strategy involves a silver turkey baster. :re:

Well strangely for Sunset Beach they didn't drag out the reveal of Olivia being involved for ages. It was all blurted out right away. Weirdly AJ has decided that it's not that terrible and is still up for it with Olivia. I guess just to spite long time rival Gregory. Cole, on the other hand hasn't taken it so well. After confessing to Cole, Olivia had to tell Caitlyn and Sean who were horrified. Not that Caitlyn could be too horrified. Imagine if Caitlyn knew her baby was stolen from her mother... Oh what a tangled web!
Anyways Cole wants nothing to do with Olivia and doesn't want her near his son. He's off to visit Elaine for a while and has told Caitlyn just because he doesn't want to see Olivia doesn't mean that she cant.
Annie's lawyer who was Caroline's father on B&B and also was in Dark Shadows I just discovered! Has sent Olivia divorce papers, pretending it was an accident just to see if it would speed up the process for Annie to marry Gregory. It works, Olivia calls the lawyer asking why he sent them. He says his secretary must have sent them by accident as they were on his desk with some stuff to be mailed. He offers to send someone to pick them up. And she says no, then goes to Gregory to ask him to sign them. While there they argue and AJ shows up and in a rage Gregory signs them!

In other news... While at the cabin with Derek the penny finally dropped to Meg that he's not Ben. She found a photo of young Ben and his brother who was a twin. So now she knows he's a killer and she's trapped in the middle of nowhere and they have no phones and he keeps trying it on with her. She's not having a great time of it. I love it.
Meanwhile Ben's still trapped with the crazy woman obsessed with gothic romance novels. They have just had an improvised gothic wedding ceremony in the funeral home dressed in Victorian gothic garb. She's injected him with some drug so he cant move and has him in coffin! I swear! A coffin! He's playing along with her in order to get out of there somehow.

Things seem to be moving uncharacteristically fast for Sunset Beach, I found it weird. Then there was an add bumper in the episode and it mentioned that July 17th a tidal wave hits Sunset Beach. I guess they are wrapping up lingering plots and getting their ducks all in a row so they can do the whole shockwave storyline. Oh what fun!

I think the entire premise of Sunset Beach is just someone walking in on a conversation, entering a room, or standing in a doorway and saying, "what the hell is going on here?"

I know this happens a lot in soaps, Dynasty season 5/6 seems to come to mind. It was always Claudia wasn't it? But Sunset Beach does it constantly. If someone made a compilation clip of all such scenes it would be feature length.

Jim Storm, I believe his name is. He played Dr. Larry Wolek on One Life to Live in the early years of that show. When Jim decided to leave OLTL (perhaps for the role on DS...the timing is kind of fuzzy), he recommended an actor whose work he was very familiar with: his fraternal twin brother, Michael. So Larry got burned in a fire, got plastic surgeried and woke up with a new face. It was kind of the prototype for the evil twin taking over his brother's life, though I hear Michael Storm was actually very nice. :D

Wasn't the whole first two weeks Meg talking to her IM buddy who she thinks is Casey and then he goes into anaphylactic shock after she gives him strawberry muffins, anything to get his shirt off even at the hospital I guess

I watched a load of episodes the other night and when I came to post the site went down just as I was about to post. I'm watching the last couple of episodes over again tonight. Seems like I am rapidly approaching the earthquake.

So Ben had been drugged by the whackjob at the funeral home and it had made him unable to walk. However the drug began to wear off and he was able to escape after struggling with Miss Misery. In the struggle the place caught fire, but because Ben is a good guy he went back and saved Miss Misery before he fled. He went to the police station to try and find out if they knew about Derek. When there Ricardo arrests him as Tim had just woke up from his coma and told Ricardo that Ben had been the one who pushed him off the scaffolding at he beach, obviously not knowing about Derek. So Ben was arrested for attempted murder and he and Ricardo argue over Maria. Around the same time Meg's parents are visiting Tim at the private hospital he was moved to and while he is talking to them we see that someone is watching from the corridor. We just see their view of the room through an ajar door. This is Maria as far as I remember. I know that she shows up at the hospital as an amnesiac who's been a patient there for a while. And I know that she makes her first scenes during the earthquake.

Still at the cabin, Meg thinks she's just been paranoid and decides she must be wrong about Ben. She has a shower with Derek thinking it's Ben, while in the shower the fancy rubber makeup thing he had on the cut in his leg comes off. This is the cut that Tim said Ben would have after their fight on the island. Meg panics but plays it cool, trying to work out what's going on. She pretends she's not feeling well and persuades Derek to go into town to get her something. She then searches the cabin and in doing so finds the box containing the supposed ashes of Ben as Derek thought he'd had him cremated, only Miss Misery found Ben alive and decided to keep him.

Meanwhile Cole has returned from his trip to see his mother and Caitlyn just came downstairs as a totally different person. She's now being played by Kim Haskin. I think I may like this actress better. Annie has been pressuring Caitlyn to help convince Gregory to marry her. Threatening to tell everyone where her baby came from. Caitlyn does so reluctantly. The thing is that Annie has to marry Gregory by the stroke of midnight that day. With Gregory having his daughter's blessing he decides to marry Annie. Only now Annie's no time to do it the normal way so she convinces Gregory to fly to Vegas for a quickie wedding. However while flying there in the private jet the pilot feels unwell and decides he has to fly back. Annie pretends to get him a drink as he may be dehydrated and she drugs him and he passes out and she takes the wheel of the plane while Gregory is on a business call. He only notices something is wrong when there is severe turbulence and goes to see what's happening and finds Annie flying the plane. Apparently she was over Canadian airspace on her way to Vegas from California. I don't understand that at all. Also it's mentioned that Annie has had flying lessons, which is at least something as this is a hoot but also a bit of a stretch. I mean Annie's daydreams are one thing but this....
Gregory is also a trained pilot. I swear! And so he takes the plane and initially wants to turn back but Annie convinces him to go on to Vegas.

Gaby believes Ben's story about a twin, as she remembered Meg's sister Sarah mentioning seeing a photo of Ben and his twin and so she decides to help Ben escape. Father Antonio helps, but in a priestly kind of way. He more looks the other way and distracts cops. Gaby has to enlist the help of Cole who owed her a favour for letting him snoop police files not too long ago. Cole show's up and frees Ben from his cell. He goes after meg.

While all that was going on Ricardo went to check out if Meg was ok and to see if there really was a twin. Casey went with him as he knew where Ben's cabin was. On their way there though, they are caught by two guys with guns who want to kill them. I swear it's like a scene from Deliverance only with pretty daytime actors. There is a fight and all that jazz and Ricardo and Casey manage to overpower them and cuff them. Then they go off to find Meg...

However while all that was going on Derek returned to the Cabin and realised that Meg was acting suspiciously and they argue. Overcome with anger over Ben's apparent murder she screams the she knows everything. They fight, she throws Ben's ashes in his face and almost gets away but he grabs her and pins her down. Just at that moment the door boots open and there's Ben to save the day. This bit has all actually been really good. I'm gripped!
Ben and Derek now fight, Derek has a knife and in the struggle one of them gets stabbed but you don't know who. It's funny that Ben always only wore black his whole time on the show. And so Derek impersonating him is in black, however hear Ben is in a white shirt. Obviously it's good vs evil and and easy way to tell who's winning the fight. Turns out it was Ben who was stabbed in the side and Derek escapes out of the cabin. Meg helps bandage Ben up.

After Gregory signed the divorce papers AJ and Bette have Olivia throw darts at a picture of him stuck to a dark board. She almost cant do it but then imagines Annie's face instead of his. She hits it right in the eye, and the sound of the dark hitting the board brings back a memory. She remembers a door slam in the cabin they day she lost her baby. She remembers she was in a cabin. She remembers bits of the phone call. She remembers it was Silverado Canyon. AJ wants her to go there tonight in hope of remembering more of what happened to her baby.

And... I think that's us all up to date. I will talk a little about Annie's fantasies and daydreams a bit later. I am getting arthritis from typing this.

I'm getting seasick from reading this. :D

Yes, things are inching closer to the Shockwave story--I recall bits and pieces of this, including Cam Haskin coming down the stairs and trying to pretend she'd been around for all this stuff with the baby. Talk about being tossed into the fire.

Apparently she was over Canadian airspace on her way to Vegas from California. I don't understand that at all. Also it's mentioned that Annie has had flying lessons, which is at least something as this is a hoot but also a bit of a stretch. I mean Annie's daydreams are one thing but this....

I think something is wrong with me, because the oddest part of this whole scenario to me was the idea that if Gregory is a pilot, why wasn't he flying his plane to begin with?

Interesting that both Cole and Caitlin were recast as the second actors to play the roles definitely made a stronger impression
