A picture may speak a thousand words. But sometimes curiosity about a member's avatar demands a little more.

Here's a space to tell us about the iconic image you've chosen to be your "forum face". Or to ask other members about theirs.

  • Do you like our new, circular avvys? And has it influenced the picture you use?
  • Do you associate certain members with a specific avatar they've used? Any favourites over the years?
  • What's your current avatar? And why have you chosen it?

Tell all below...

My present avatar is the glamorous and sassy Carolyn Bligh from Fifties-set drama A Place To Call Home, which I'm currently watching for the first time:

She's seated outside an empty railway station, and revealing something to somebody. I won't say more about the scene, because it's spoiler-ish. But...

A little research has told me that the scene was filmed at the little-used Couridjah Railway Station in New South Wales, which is a beautiful piece of iconography by itself.

It even looks pretty as a picture on street view.

Circular is nice. It's a bit "Through the round window ..."

And has it influenced the picture you use?

Not yet. I still have the one I used on Ye Olde Soap Chat. I'm just pleased all the faces still fit in the round window!

Do you associate certain members with a specific avatar they've used?

The first one that springs to mind is someone who used to post on the Music forum before the Crash of '16 when we first starting doing the Top 10s. For the life of me, I can't remember her name but she was very nice and she loved Fleetwood Mac but she was open to lots of other types of music, and her avatar was of a female rock singer. It wasn't Stevie Nicks or Christine McVie because she had brown, maybe reddish hair, but it was someone like that - maybe one of the members of Heart or Sheryl Crow - and it was taken from above so you were kind of looking at the top of her head (I think). But anyway, that picture, even though I don't know who it was of, and the poster, whose name I can't remember, are sort of fused into one in my head so I kind of imagine that's what the poster looked like, whoever she was. (Bet you're glad you asked now.)

What's your current avatar?

It's of the final scene between JR and John Ross in New DALLAS. This is what I wrote about it recently:

The setting for JR and John Ross’s last face-to-face conversation, a men’s room at the courthouse, feels both incongruous and somehow perfect. John Ross emerges from a stall to find JR waiting for him, Bum looking on silently. He scowls at his daddy and heads for the basin to wash his hands. “Your mama thinks I should forgive you for consorting with the enemy and since staying on Sue Ellen’s good side is a prudent thing to do at the moment, I’m inclined to oblige,” says JR. “I don’t need your forgiveness,” John Ross snaps, addressing his daddy’s reflection in the mirror rather than looking at him directly. “You don’t need my wrath either — we dinosaurs are known to bite,” JR replies calmly. John Ross is distracted by a text message that makes him smile despite himself — Drew Ramos has been arrested for receiving stolen goods. JR is pleased too. “That puts our ambitious little señorita in moral violation of her contract with your mother, doesn’t it? Wonderful,” he says. John Ross is surprised: “You knew about that, the morals clause?” “You still don’t know who you’re dealing with, do you, son? I can hardly blame you for that, but I forgive you,” JR replies. And that’s their whole relationship in a nutshell — estrangement, resentment, oneupmanship, remorse, forgiveness and a spot of shared deviousness at someone else’s expense — all executed with the lightest of touches.

Fifties-set drama A Place To Call Home

I'm looking forward to that!

and the poster, whose name I can't remember
Minx from Canada.

I think it's almost impossible to avoid the association. You know it's not really them, but maybe it's like when you read a book and you have a mental picture of the characters. I know the real faces of a few forum members, and I still see them as their avatar alter ego.

They're great for fish-eyed images.
It also reminds me of those particular stickers (e.g. from the supermarket) that children can collect for an album or something (footballers or smurfs or all the characters from Game Of Thrones, well maybe not Game Of Thrones)

Yes!! Thank you for putting me out of my misery. Minx had that very nice, relaxed, laid-back "thing" that I associate with Canadians.

And with all those stunning pictures of nearby scenery she used to post I think she had very good reasons to be relaxed and laid-back.
It's probably the most beautiful country in the world, but surprisingly, nobody really cares about it.

Oh wow. I hadn't realised the significance of that scene. And I imagine they didn't know at the time it would be their final scene together.

Now you've described the scene, I can see what's going on. Because of the mirror, I'd been thinking it was some kind of collage, rather than a cleverly composed shot from the series.

I'm looking forward to that!

I think it's safe to say you're in for a treat. I'm loving it.

Oh yes - I know what you mean. Or those badges that used to come as free gifts with comics.

Yes I do like the circular avvies. I honestly don’t remember what they were in the days of yore. Square?

I have noticed many people use nighttime us soap characters for their avvies so no I don’t associate them with anyone really. Although I think wow that person is really good looking!
my Avvie is Kylie in a still shot from her new video. Why? Because she is just plain awesome.

I explained this elsewhere, but I guess it bears repeating.

For twenty years (!!) I had the same avatar (with a few changes for Christmas-themed antics). Since Daniel Avery is of course the second child of Richard and Laura Avery of Knots Landing, I could only find one really good picture of him and his mother. It just so happened that it was also Constance McCashin with her real-life son, Daniel Weisman. It was a publicity shot taken shortly after he was born.

Well, my twentieth anniversary rolled around in June and I realized it was time 'Daniel' grew up. I found this photo, along with several others which were taken at Daniel Weisman's wedding. I guess when twenty more years rolls along, I'll have to find something else.

My user name is Mo Mouse and the avatar is a mouse. As for the shape being round, it is not of any great importance in my life.

You mean... you’re not... a...mouse???

Personally, I always prefer square avatars because circles cut off about a fifth of the area of the square from which it was made. However, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook etc. have all moved to circular avatars so the change is on trend.

I changed my avatar to mark the opening of the new forum. I always use a photos of Angela Channing except for during the last UK general election campaign when I changed it to Jeremy Corbyn and on one occasion when I changed it to a photo of a young Jane Wyman. Sometimes other Falcon Crest characters appear in my avatar alongside Angela.

My current avatar is taken from the final scene of Falcon Crest because it was burned into my mind after watching it repeatedly when I was making an animation of it. I've used this photo before but when it was a square you could see more of the champagne glass she was holding but now it isn't entirely clear what that object is.
