bmasters9 joined Telly Talk on September 16th 2016.

Four days after we returned from the great cyber crash of 2016, bmasters9 would register with us. Was this a coincidence that they joined at that time, or were they a member before the crash?

Little is known of bmasters9 apart from their love of cats and a great DVD collection of classic TV.

Please take this week to ask as many, or little questions you have for bmasters9 including any follow up questions that might arise during the week.

Enjoy your week in the spotlight.

I will start with my predictable question

bmasters9, if you were to take part in Mastermind (a quiz show) what would be your specialist subject?

Thanks for the initial post to start this time in the spotlight-- if I were there, I think that specialist subject would be classic TV (or classic American telly, as the British would put it). I haven't had much experience with modern American telly, for reasons unknown, but I probably could answer anything put to me about the classics.

Hi @bmasters9 , hope you have a fun week answering all the questions.

1. When you were a child what did you really want to be when you grew up?
2. What fantasy world from TV or film would you choose to live in and why?
3. If money were no object, what would be the first thing you would buy?
4. If you had a TARDIS (time machine), which historical event would you travel back to, to find out what really happened?

Have a great week.

Hi @bmasters9

I hope you will enjoy your week in the spotlight. :)

I am wondering two things.

1. What's your interests?
2. Who is on your avatar?

Thanks very much for the enjoyment wish!

As to your questions:

1. One major interest of mine is traveling, and one interest related to that is highway signs, especially on gantries, especially in big cities that I've never been to. I've been to quite a few cities, and (I don't know if I told you, but I'm autistic) whenever I've seen a highway sign formation on a gantry, that has been a marvel to me (don't know why it has, but it has).

And speaking of cities, that's another big thrill of mine (especially skylines w/big, tall buildings, like in Los Angeles for instance, someplace I've never been before, but hope to when this lockdown is out [my brother has been wanting to take me there w/his boss from his job, because that's been a dream of mine for a long time]). In fact, here is a video of L.A. driving that has practically everything I've talked about in this answer:

2. As to who is in the avatar, that is a longtime CBS Sports personality by the name of Jim Nantz; the avatar is a shot of him when he was on his first job for CBS Sports when I was a boy of five back in 1986 (it was called The Prudential College Football Report, and it was the halftime studio scoreboard show of college football broadcasts on Saturdays on CBS then). What it was was mostly scores and highlights, and generally a short feature or interview about a headline story in college football as of a particular Saturday (sometimes other things would be considered, like a baseball score when the story was a big one [like the New York Mets being on their way to winning the World Series in 1986]).

Jim Nantz had started on this segment when I was four years old in 1985 (he was 26), and he had a partner for his first year by the name of Pat Haden (Haden was only there for that first year, though); he worked alone in 1986, but then had another partner for his last two years there, the late, legendary Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian. Jim left after the 1988 season (Greg Gumbel took over for one more year), and from there, has forged a remarkable 3.5-decade career w/CBS, on such things as the NFL, The Masters golf tournament in Augusta, and many other things.

Here is a clip of what The Prudential College Football Report was like, from a 1986 broadcast between Arizona and UCLA that was seen on KCBS in L.A. (CBS O&O of Los Angeles; the segment was from Studio 43 in New York at the CBS Broadcast Center, which has changed looks many times since I was a boy).

The reason for the long answers is because I felt you'd want to know a good bit more of why I had the interest(s) I described, and why the avatar is the way it is; thank you very much for asking!

Hi,
1. What is your occupation?
2.What are your favourite gameshows?
3. What other forums (if any) do you post on aside from tellytalk.net ?

Thank you for wanting to know about me as well-- appreciate the questions!

1. I have no occupation (as in job) that I go to; I mostly live at home.

2. My favorite game shows are classic American game shows from my youth, like Tic Tac Dough w/Wink Martindale, and Pyramid w/the great, late Dick Clark, among others.

3. I post on quite a few forums/message boards other than here, like the TVNewsTalk Forums (about television news and its many aspects), and SitcomsOnline forums (about comedies on television, and also DVD releases of the same; that message board is also about general television as well of the past and present).

Hi @bmasters9, I have a few questions for you:

1. Your forum name"bmasters9", is there a story behind why you chose that name to use on here?
2. Your avatar is of Jim Nantz so I'm assuming you're an NFL fan. Do you have a favourite player, either current or of all time?
3. Who is the most famous person that you have met?
4. What are your favourite films of all time?

Bumping this up-- thanks for your expressing an interest in things about me.

The first, third and fourth questions, I'll have to plead the Fifth on, but the second one I can answer, and will try to:

I would like to live in the NYC of the 70s, insofar as it is presented in that ABC police comedy called Barney Miller. What I would like to do is to be part of Captain Miller's 12th Precinct police squad, because they were very much about paperwork, and the cases were relatively minor beefs compared to what many other television police squads had to deal with (and very much handled in a hilarious manner as well).

Hi ,

I'm also interested to know what tickles your funny bone.

What are your favourite sitcoms and who are your favourite comedians?

Easy answer-- only two have really done it for me lately where that is concerned: Barney Miller w/Hal Linden, and The Bob Newhart Show w/Bob Newhart (both of which I have on DVD).

1. Where did you grow up? House/apartment/barn/shelter? Small town/big city?

2. If you got a book deal, what kind of book would you write?

Hello @bmasters9 ! Your avatar makes me want to ask if you ever watched George Michael's Sports Machine? It was a great show with sporting highlights at weeks end from 1984-2007.

Thanks for asking! Yes, indeed-- I recall seeing that from time to time on my local NBC station (WYFF 4).

Hi @bmasters9
First I apologize if this has been asked already I didn’t read through all of the other posts as I’m on my lunch break.
I presume you are a sports fan. What sport in particular is your favorite and what team is your favorite?

4. What are your favourite films of all time?

1. About my username bmasters9: I don't think there's any rhyme or reason as why that is my username; I just liked having a number.

2. I have an all-time player who I think was one of the best: the late Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears (RB, #34).

3. Have not met anyone in my 39 years on this Earth, so cannot truly say.

4. Quite a few:

The China Syndrome
All The President's Men
Home Alone 2
Christmas Vacation
Ramona and Beezus
White House Down
Wish Upon

1. Where did you grow up? House/apartment/barn/shelter? Small town/big city?

2. If you got a book deal, what kind of book would you write?

1. Small town of Fountain Inn, SC.

2. Hard to say on that one-- quite a few subjects interest me.

Baseball-- I think I most favor the Chicago White Sox (perhaps because I simply like the name).

What kind of music do you like @bmasters9 ?

Here lately, my most favorite kind of music has been television theme songs (generally of the past); some of my favorites are from The Streets of San Francisco, The Bob Newhart Show, Barney Miller, Hawaii Five-O, The Untouchables, and of course, our favorite O-R CBS Lorimar Dallas.
