Danny Seagren – “Spidey Super Stories”

Remember PBS’ “The Electric Company”? Well, did you know that Spider-Man’s first official live-action portrayal was on this show in a series of comedic shorts. Basically, Spider-Man, who was played by the show’s puppeteer/dancer Danny Seagren, faced off against mostly petty criminals, so as to teach children lessons about not breaking the law. He never spoke out loud, instead using comic speech bubbles to get his point across.

Nicholas Hammond – “The Amazing Spider-Man”

Nicholas Hammond, who is known to many for his role in The Sound of Music, played Spider-Man in this short-lived TV series. It got some pretty solid reviews but CBS cancelled it anyways for some unknown reason. The pilot had a feature-film length and there were two movies made from the series by compiling two episodes together, Spider-Man Strikes Back and Spider-Man: The Dragon’s Challenge.

For the eagle-eyed readers out there, you’ll probably notice that the show was filmed in Los Angeles, even though it says it takes place in New York City.

Shinji Todō – “Spider-Man”

While “The Amazing Spider-Man” was airing on CBS, Japan’s Toei Company created their own Spider-Man series that was loosely based on the comics. However, Todō wasn’t playing Peter Parker in this series. Rather, he was Takuya Yamashiro, a young man who got his powers from…an alien that survived a UFO crash? Also he can control the ship, which has the ability to transform into a giant robot named Leopardon? You know what? I don’t care. You do you, Japan.

Tobey Maguire – Spider-Man 1, 2, and 3

For most of us, our first encounter with Spidey was with Tobey Maguire in the three films directed by Sam Raimi. The first two were well-received while the third got mediocre reviews. The series saw him face Green Goblin, Sandman, Venom, Doc Ock, and more!

Overall, the three films generated nearly $2.5 billion worldwide, making them hugely successful in the financial department. That’s also not even counting any of the merch sales, of which there had to be TONS!

Andrew Garfield – The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2

After five years, director Marc Webb brought us a new incarnation of the web-slinger, this time with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. Many felt that the casting decision was a much better fit than Maguire and reception for the first film was through the roof. The second however…

The two films earned nearly $1.4 billion worldwide, so I guess Sony’s pretty happy with their investment!

Tom Holland – Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming

The youngest actor to play Spider-Man, Holland has already become the fan favorite, thanks to his youthful exuberance and great portrayal. As mentioned above, his first feature-length film comes out in summer of 2017 where he’ll be facing Vulture, played by Michael Keaton. If Marvel’s track record has anything to say, this film will knock it out of the park when it comes to the box office.

I can just about remember Nicholas Hammond playing Spiderman in the 1970s and loved that series. Other than Adam West's Batman, it was the only time I can remember a superhero being portrayed on UK TV. I was in infant school at the time so it might be that I'm looking back at the series through the rose-tinted glasses of a child and thought it was better than it actually was but at the time I always thought it was exciting to watch.

Of the three modern Spider-Mans, Tobey was my least favorite. Nearly 30 in the first film, overall I just found him miscast and rather drab in the role; plus, as an actor, his technique doesn't seem to go beyond occasionally widening his eyes. I liked Andrew a bit more, although the films themselves weren't as good as the first trilogy.

Tom Holland is the only one that has looked age appropriate and his portrayal has the exuberant humor of the character that was largely missing from the first two. His Peter Parker is missing some of the nerdiness I would expect but, then, the question wasn't 'Who played Peter Parker the best?'

I have to go with Tobey. When I think of Spider Man he’s the first one I think of. I do like Andrew Garfield in the role better than I thought I would when I first saw him though.

Having finally seen the first Andrew Garfield film I've now got a feel for the three main film actors.

I thought Tobey Maguire made a good Spider-Man. Possibly the best of the three. But since I never really bought him as Peter Parker - the man behind the mask - it made the whole thing fall flat.

I saw the first Tom Holland Spider-Man film and have forgotten most of it so he didn't make much of an impression. Mostly I found his babbling enthusiasm incredibly annoying. I appreciate this is the point of the portrayal, but that was small comfort. If the clothes maketh the man, the MCU Spider-Man has the perfect mask and the best suit. If only they'd been faithful to the original costume design instead of becoming too concerned with all the Stark bells and whistles, the additional detailing and the silly blinking eyes.

Overall I'd go with Garfield. Certainly aesthetically. He's always looked the most right to me as Peter Parker, and he looked good in the suit (though I disliked the ASM costume with its go-faster stripes and missing belt area). Even he wasn't without his flaws though. I liked his cockiness as Spidey, but felt there was a bit too much of that going on far too soon as Peter Parker who needs to be a more placid character (the smart mouth is part of the "act" of being Spidey, done to compensate for his naturally introverted personality).

I think ideally I'd have Garfield in Holland's suit starring in Maguire's original trilogy.

After watching Tom Holland, I'm now of the opinion he is my favourite. I like his quirky voice, and it feels like a cartoon from my childhood.

I hear you Ome, and I know what you mean about the cartoon thing. I actually had a couple of those moments watching the first Andrew Garfield film, and I don't remember ever having that association with Tobey Maguire's Spidey.

Tom has potential to become my favourite interpretation as well. He certainly looks the part.

Because he looks and acts so young, I think his films will show him growing up more realistically. For me, once they tone down the "omigodthisissoexcitingiamgonnabeanavenger" over-enthusiasm I'll really start to enjoy him. And to be fair, I think even in the first film they did move on from that a bit. It's just that they really overdid it in the opening minutes of the film so that my first impression was of a kid who'd been given too much caffeine.

It's been a long time since I've watched both Toby and Andrew's version, and having just watched Venom, I'm planning on doing Toby's trilogy again; I have a very vague memory of Eddie Brok in the third film. Then I think I'm going to do Andrew again.

As I do each film, I'm sure that I will find reasons to think they are the best interpretations of the Spidey hero.

I'm torn. Part of me feels it's so OTT it's annoying, yet the other part of me sees the childish personality that sits with my enjoyment of who Spidey is.

Having thought about that (as I was typing away), I'm curious how I will find this when I rewatch the two movies. I can see the potential for it to become annoying.

It's been a long time since I've watched both Toby and Andrew's version

With Tobey's films it's been a long time for me too. I think they're great films - especially the first two - and think of them as the definitive cinematic take on the character in the same way I do the first couple of Christopher Reeve Superman films.

I have a sealed Blu-ray trilogy steelbook that's been sitting on my shelf for a long time, so perhaps I need to watch it soon and appreciate it in HD.

having just watched Venom, I'm planning on doing Toby's trilogy again; I have a very vague memory of Eddie Brok in the third film.

Oh yes, it will be interesting to see how it compares with the Venom film you've just watched.

Then I think I'm going to do Andrew again.

This was my first time out with Andrew's first film and I'm so glad to have finally seen it.

I'll probably wait to watch the second if and when it becomes free to view on Prime or iPlayer. I'm less enthused about that one because I really dislike Electro being so very different from the comics version I remember. But I'll certainly give it a whirl.

As I do each film, I'm sure that I will find reasons to think they are the best interpretations of the Spidey hero.

Yes, there are definite pros and cons to each.

I keep vacillating on my definitive Spidey and I'm even thinking we haven't met him yet. Perhaps that will come with the next reboot/recast in five or ten years' time.

I'm curious how I will find this when I rewatch the two movies. I can see the potential for it to become annoying.

For me I think it might work the other way round. Because my first impact was of him being hyped up to the point of annoyance that's my main memory of his portrayal. When I watch the next film or re-watch the first, I'll probably have quite low expectations and I may end up enjoying him more than I expect.

Incidentally, we cannot have this thread without mentioning Kenny Everett's portrayal of Spider-Man:

It was such an accurate spoof of the live-action Seventies series. My favourite Everett Spidey skit was where he was crawling on a wall and looked dramatically round from side to side (perfectly imitating the body language from the Hammond series), and then let out a huge fart.

The Tobey Spider-Man films were excellent and as a long time fan of Marvel's Spider-Man I can endorse that Sam Raimi knew his subject! The next two films weren't as good and Electro was awful! The Tom Holland films started pretty bad too but picked up a bit with Mysterio but I can't say I'm holding my breath....
