With the 40th anniversary next year isn't it about time we had a gold standard DVD collection?

The extras on the DVD sets are shockingly bad - no real insight into behind the scenes, deleted scenes, out-takes, gag-reels, interviews, writing, cliffhangers etc etc.

For a show that was globally popular, with top 10 ratings throughout the world, surely the DVDs should reflect that.

As a fan of Doctor Who I bought the classic DVDs BECAUSE of the extras - fantastic insights into the show with interviews from cast and crew - and with Dallas I would absolutely love to hear what the cast and crew thought of many aspects of the show.

Alas, many of them are no longer with us, so the chances of it ever happening are beyond possible - but it seems to me they pushed the DVDs out with very little thought about what extra content they could have.

Such a wasted and missed opportunity.

Not DVD, BLURAY! I want to see all the seasons in 1080p high def!
If it was still with CBS and owned by them today instead of stupid Warners, there might have been a restored version available for years already!
I mean, just look at Dynasty ... or what CBS did with Star Trek TNG. These shows look amazing now, like shot just a few years ago.
Dallas has no special effects ro recreate, they just would have to re-scan those stupid film rolls. Damn you, Warners!

I agree, although possibly the time for proper special features has passed with the likes of Larry having passed away.

Certainly something better could and should have been done for the 35th anniversary. Good though Barbara Curran's book was, the show deserved some kind of proper, fitting book by way of tribute as well.

Most definitely. The Incredible Hulk, The A-Team, Magnum P.I., Miami Vice and Knight Rider are all out on BD. Not to mention Warner's other big cash cow: Friends. So a Dallas Blu-ray set isn't out of the question.

I'm less bothered about new bonus features (although I'd like the current features moved across to an HD version and a new feature or two would be welcome to give a Blu-ray a USP). But the idea of seeing it in high definition is a very pleasing one.

Not to mention that BD-players became quite cheap. For the price of 2 season box sets on DVD you can get a decent Bluray-player already, plus they do all play the old DVDs as well.
So noone who still buys crappy resolution DVD sets can tell me "can't buy Blurays as i don't own a BD player cause they're too expensive". :re:
Can't tell how many times i've heard this crap already.

I like this idea..especially having all the season's on Blu-ray. However, I am hearing that people want "extras" such as behind the scenes, deleted scenes, out-takes, gag-reels, interviews, writing, cliffhangers etc...maybe they don't exist? I mean maybe what we see on the DVD's that are out now, are all there is.

What I would like to see is to have all the seasons on Netflix! That way I can easily access them.

Add me the the BluRay fans too - I just wasn't sure it was possible.

With regard to the extras the things I'd love to see are:

On screen interview with David Jacobs on how the show was created and what he thought of the show after he left - especially with the dream & Conundrum.

Casting Dallas - how the original cast were brought together.

The art of the cliffhanger - a look at how some of the biggest cliffhangers came about both season finales & "in series" cliffhangers, which Dallas excelled at.

Commentaries by cast/crew on key episodes.

Southfork - an indepth look at the ranch (both of them) and how the real Southfork looks inside & how it now works as a tourist attraction.

Dallas Worldwide - looking at how Dallas created a media storm globally.

Cast Interviews - individual on screen interviews with as many key cast members as possible, but it would also be fantastic to have joint interviews with Ken & Victoria (I can dream) and Patrick/Victoria/Priscilla & Steve/Susan etc.

Extras - a feature on regular characters such as Punk, who made the series feel like a bigger ensemble.

Remembering Dallas - a feature looking at those cast members no longer with us and stories about them from surviving cast and crew.

Behind The Scenes - a look at Katzman/Caprice and those who made Dallas so popular from being the scenes.

The Dream - I think this does deserve it's own feature as it still to this day divides fans.

Conundrum - how would surviving cast & crew have ended the show....and when?

Gag Reels - we know they exist, but I've never seen decent footage of them, so having them on a new DVD/RluRay set would be fantastic.

Alternative endings/outakes - if they exist.

What might have been - plots and storylines that were changed or dropped.

I'd be thankful just for the complete Blu-ray box set, including Dallas: The Early Years plus the reunion movies. But shouldn't we be contacting Warner Bros. regarding this instead of suggesting it here?

But I have submitted a request if the good people at Warner Bros. will release a special Blu-ray box set to celebrate the 40th Anniversary next year. I'll let people know here if I get any response. You never know.

There's definitely some stuff out there. Someone uploaded a number of blooper videos on YT and I'm sure with the sheer amount of publicity Dallas generated back then there are probably a few good in-depth interviews somewhere, they wouldn't necessarily be produced for the series release because the concept didn't really exist prior to the extra space on DVDs but still, there's so much out there that I'm sure they could scrape something together.

As others have said though, if there's anything they could do about the picture quality in the middle-later seasons it would almost be worth repurchasing. That VHS transfer looking quality gets distracting at times.

As the DVDs are now I don't really have a problem with them, the only thing I get annoyed with is the switch from fat to thin boxes. The overlapped discs in the case annoy the heck out of me, you have to put them in with disc 2 underneath otherwise the discs don't click in properly, so every time you want to view disc 2 (or the ones on the back of the inside) you have to remove both disc 1 and disc 2. The fat boxes with the flippy things inside are easier access.

The complete series box set is nice too, it could be more creative but it's not horrible. Mine doesn't play the music, that was my biggest :( when I first received it lol.

id love to see a big coffee table book on Dallas - there is one but ended at dream season

I would love to see more cast interviews featuring all cast not just Larry, Linda and patrick

Id also KILL to see the full Dinah Shore interview with the cast from 1979/80, where Jim davis had too much to drink, they all came on parading Larrys flags and a good time was had by all, even BBG made a rare appearance
id also like to see peoples Choice, Golden globes awards with cast
the year BBG won Emmy she/they boycotted show due to SAG strike so not there for acceptance speech

personally i dont see them being re released as I think TNT killed off the Dallas brand, and people that want the DVds have them

Is Curran's book going to be re-released for the 40th anniversary?

Anyway, yes, the DVDs for the first few seasons were pretty poor -- even the professional DVD reviewers pointed out that it was odd that Warner's was doing such a crappy job given DALLAS' importance to TV history.

Given what Dallas fans have had to tolerate during its nearly 40 year history I'm not surprised Warner Bros. just meted out the same sub-standard quality. Given the advancements in software surely running the old film stock and converting to 1080p wouldn't be too much to ask for. A little bit of pre-publicity from the surviving stars to generate interest could turn into a little money spinner for Warner Bros. Rather than second guess what shipment quantities to different countries would be required we could order directly via Warner Bros. online shop. A limited edition Blu-ray Box Set (I can live without the extras) would satisfy most customers.

So far no response from Warner Bros. With its estimated 8000 employees surely someone is sitting in their little cubicle checking their emails. Perhaps I've placed the cat amongst the pigeons and someone high up has just realized what a top notch idea to re-release Dallas on Blu-ray to celebrate the 40th Anniversary.

They are all so busy with "remastering" season 4 of Falcon Crest for 3 years now. ;)

Rove, you wouldn´t believe how many employees Warner has for the video marketing department in L.A....You´d count them with one hand!!

Regarding the notion of 40th anniversary Blu Rays not being released because TNT killed the Dallas brand, I doubt very much that if they don't release a Dallas 40th anniversary Blu Ray set it will be because a significant number of people are under the impression that TNT's version of Dallas had the power to kill the Dallas legacy or to decrease people's interest in watching episodes of the the original Dallas.

After all, if people have a desire to own a Blu Ray set of the original series, the quality (or lack thereof) of TNT's experiment has no impact on people's ability to enjoy watching the series they have loved for 40 years.

As for cast interviews, I'd be interested in seeing them but I hope they don't make the mistake of pairing Patrick Duffy with Linda Gary again. Their commentary is some of the worst commentary it's ever been my displeasure to listen to on a DVD "extra feature." Patrick and Linda seemed to be under the delusion that they were providing commentary for a comedy show. I don't know who told them their jokes were funny.

Patrick, you're not funny. Linda you're not funny. Instead of trying to be comedians, how about providing insight into the making of the show?
