Walter Driscoll
I'm glad you posted about Walt Driscoll. We are doing a re-watch now and agree that the time around the contest for Ewing Oil is a great time to watch.
Until then, we would hear about blackmail and bribery but didn't see the effect it had on real people. Starting with Walt Driscoll we could say, "Hey, here is a normal, regular person just doing his job. And the contest for Ewing Oil destroyed his life."
To put a finer point on it: There is one thing to hear about blackmailing a corrupt judge we never see. Watching this happen to a regular person and witnessing it happen made the contest for Ewing oil very real.
Great season, and great writing! Not to mention great acting.

The revelation that Ray was Jock Ewing's son, the death of Jock Ewing, the contest for Ewing Oil. These storylines developed some great characters.
Not the Xerox copies of dull characters that would come in the later seasons.
