Not that SuBe cared about such details, but as long as her mother was not declared legally insane/incapacitated or something similar, Vanessa would have to seek power of attorney or some sort of conservatorship over her mother to gain access to her medical records. HIPAA laws do not let anyone look at personal medical files of other people very easily, even for their closest relatives. Of course option #3 was not on the table in 1997, which is....a visit to Web.MD!
Well as this plays out it seems that Martyn's Syndrome seems to also carry some dementia like symptoms. It apparently affects the brain, Vanessa's mother has violet outbursts and can seem to be taunting Vanessa and behaving as if she's not really of sound mind. But yes she could have just went to a doctor. Anyway Vanessa's symptoms are coming and going now so the mistress of all Evil who concocted that potion is slacking or something.

Is it wrong that I want to see Ricardo and his brother Sexy Father Antonio do non-brotherly things? Is that too much?

So I am now 306 episodes into Sunset Beach. And 22 years after the fact I have finally found out how the Richards house totally changed over night! After Gregory brought Olivia back from the clinic in San Francisco he became enraged with grief in the nursery. He trashed the nursery and dramatically cursed God for taking their son, then had Rose the maid pack up all evidence of him and the nursery. Then he decided he couldn't live in that house anymore and on a whim bought a new one up the beach a little. Originally Olivia didn't want to move, but in her weakened emotional state she agreed with Gregory. The new house is the house from Terror Island completely redecorated and refurbished with stone pillars that may have come from their original house set. I like the new one better, it feels more soapy. You can see a good bit of a staircase and it has a big stone fireplace and tall built in bookcases. There are also little nooks where characters can linger and overhear conversations. It reminds me of a house that would be on The Bold & The Beautiful. After they move Gregory travels back to San Francisco to find out what happened their baby. He brings the doctor back to Sunset Beach to give Olivia the medical file. The file has been forged by the doctor at Annie's insistence. It says that the baby was still born and than Olivia signed for the baby's cremation. She breaks down and has no memory of it. Gregory can not forgive her and their relationship falls apart. She becomes a little unhinged and emotional, and he becomes angry and blames her for their baby's death. He thinks she'd been drinking since she has no memory of what happened or why she was on her way to San Francisco. They fight a lot and Olivia has turned to taking pills.

Prior to the move Oliva was having hazy flashbacks every time she heard the music box played, Annie noticed this and sneaked into the house and broke it so it wouldn't play. Sean has become suspicious of Annie always hovering around, and has seen her speak with the doctor who Gregory brought back with him. He has confronted Annie about where she got Caitlyn's baby from and how coincidental it is that she found a baby for Caitlyn the same day Olivia lost hers. Who'd have thought that Sean was so smart?
Meanwhile Annie has been planting the seeds that Olivia was drinking the day she lost the baby, she even gives Gregory fake bills from a liquor store saying she purchased alcohol. Olivia is being gaslighted into thinking she was indeed drinking again and it's all her fault. Bette comforts Olivia through all of this, and is mildly suspicious of Annie too.

We also have seen Ben for the first time, but it's not clear at all to me when the switch happened and how long Ben as been in the lock up and Derek has been on the loose. Ben's tied up, and wakes up and Derek and him talk. Ben says I should have known you were around when I started having those damn headaches. Derek mentions that's that old twin bond. Ben had been having headaches for a while, but so has Derek so it's not clear to me when the switch happened. I am guessing just before they left for the Island on New Years. Ben had been moody and had headaches then so Derek must have kidnapped him the night before they set sail.
Derek had been planning to elope to Venice with Meg and kill her there. Don't Look Now says hello. Anyway Meg's mum Joan had been staying with them at the time and was delighted at the news. Then Derek announced they would be flying out that night and Joan had to tell them that Meg's father Hank was on his way out to see her before they got married, so they had to postpone their flights. Now Joan and Hank are there and it's hinted that the farm isn't doing well, so they are here for good I think. They must sell the farm soon and by Elaine's place. Strangely nobody has mentioned Meg's sister, Sarah, at all yet. She's coming too soon though I guess.

Tim is still in a coma and twitches a sexy toe now and again while reliving the nightmare of his fight with Derek on a loop in his head. Derek has mocked Ben telling him his friend Mark died believing that Ben had killed him. Derek's a right bitch!

I also discovered how Virginia had administered the potion to Vanessa, she had to put it in her body lotion so if she keeps using it the symptoms appear. Finally Vanessa went to a doctor who tells her although it looks like Martin's Syndrome, its a very rare disease and he needs to know more. When Vanessa leaves, the doctor confides in Virginia, who is working there, disguised as a woman named Yolonda, that she hopes it's not what she thinks it is, because if it is.... There just is no hope! Virginia feigns sympathy then smiles as she walks away.

Everyone has only now discovered that Madame Carmen is Ricardo and Antonio's mother. Ricardo doesn't believe in her mumbo-jumbo, and Antonio isn't convinced either. When Meg finds out she's Maria's mother she has a massive argument with Carmen and Ricardo and tells them to let Maria rest in peace and leave her and Ben alone. Carmen is convinced that Ben is a dangerous man, not realising that Derek exists she thinks ben has a "darker" side. Carmen also maybe believes that her daughter Maria is still alive but that Ben is behind her disappearance one way or another.

And after we get Sarah and her "familiar" back-story, we get the brilliantly-named villain, Melinda Fall wreaking havoc on Sarah and Casey's lives.

So poor Ben is still tied to the pipes at the building site Derek is hiding him at. What a pity that Ben hasn't realised those pipes are clearly spray painted cardboard. Some how Derek has recorded meg on a 1998 video camera and was able to project a hologram of him and her kissing so that Ben could watch it in real size at the lock up. We have also had more flashbacks of young Ben and Derek, and their English mother who cant speak proper English and seems heart set on some kind of South African. Young Derek was always beating Ben up and wanting what he had.
Now Derek is trying to get his hands on Ben's finances but he doesn't know his password, and thinks he can get it out of Meg but she doesn't know it. Wouldn't it be easier to torture Ben until he talks? No?

Meg's parents have lost the farm in Kansas, they have to sell up. Hank went back to finish things up back there, I guess they come back and buy Elaine's. Sarah has just been mentioned. She's at college in Washington.

Gregory has been very hard on Olivia over her supposed drinking and loosing the baby. This prompted Olivia to attempt suicide with Champagne and pills! However she called Caitlyn and left a goodbye message on the answering machine which Cole heard and rushed off to save her. He found her at the gotto, where she believed she conceived the baby she lost. Cole's baby... Cole brings her home and she announces to everyone that she is going away and is leaving Sunset Beach, she doesn't know for how long but she cant live in that house the way she is feeling. She tells everyone she's going to New York for a while, Bette takes her to the airport and they have a weepy goodbye. However Gregory later finds out she didn't go to New York and is actually on a cruise somewhere. I think as far as I can remember she meets AJ on this cruise. I guess Lesley Anne Down needed a holiday in real life, it had been over 300 episodes. :) She's been off screen for a few weeks now. Ten episodes or more.

Meanwhile a strange man had been following Cole, he knocked him out and then Cole woke up on the beach the next morning not knowing what had happened. Later we that same man put a cutting of Cole's hair in a bag and mention he was going to send it off to analyse the DNA. I have no idea who's doing this? I guess either Gregory suspicious of Cole and Olivia's recent closeness and wondering about the baby. Or possibly AJ Deschanel offscreen trying to determine if Cole is in fact a Deschanel by blood. I really have no idea though those are just rough guesses.

Sean had called Annie out where she got Caitlyn's baby from, thinking it could possibly be the one Olivia lost. So Annie gets the idea to hire an actress to play the baby mama to pacify Sean. When the girl turns up she seems very feisty and all wrong, but once Sean show's up she turns into a shy little victim of a thing and he seems to buy it. However this meeting is taking place at the Java Web café and the Lezza chat show is on TV with a subject of people who will do anything for money. The girl Annie hired is on the show, lots of jiggery pokery to keep Sean from seeing it but it all works out fine.
Channel 5 in the UK also aired Lezza back then too, they must have got a lot of NBC programming. Annie also has a daydream of herself on the show. Talking about all the terrible things she's done to get her hands on money.

In other real world cross overs, Gabby goes back to work at the police station and over hears people at work talking about Jerry Springer and an episode where young girls have sext with older men. She's annoyed by this, apparently thinking of her abuse. They also weirdly mention George Michael and his arrest for lewd behaviour in a public toilet and Gabby snaps at them. Strangely she seems annoyed that George Michael should dare be so lascivious. What's it got to do with you Gabby? You accused an innocent man of rape and broke up the only family you really had.
Speaking of Gabby, they are now trying to make us all forget the rape thing, now they are trying to force Gabby and Ricardo on us as a couple. He just asked her out on a date to go see The Horse Whisperer! I swear! :) He was also the one that got her back to work. I don't know I seem to remember she was into Antonio, maybe that comes later. Maybe she's the Sunset Beach version of Frankie Colby. All brothers do 'ave her.

I had somehow thought that once Virginia unleashed the Voodoo that it would be much more enjoyable concerning Vanessa. I was wrong. Now she's showing symptoms she just keeps crying and having flashbacks to her childhood and before he mother got ill. It's torturously shit. I just hate Vanessa, and Michael is just as bad. I cant understand why Virginia is so obsessed with this man who shot her husband. It's some really sketchy writing. And Virginia doesn't generally appear to be a stupid woman. She's man, but not stupid so I don't understand this.
Anyway, Vanessa is seeing Dr Estrada, who I love and want to have a bigger part. She's a specialist trying to determine if she has the disease. She's working with Dr Tyus too. However Vanessa doesn't want Tyus to know she's ill, because Vanessa is a dick like that. As Vanessa isn't really sick, just displaying fake symptoms, Virginia had to take a sample from Vanessa's mother's infected skin and switch it with Vanessa's sample. However she was disturbed in the process and couldn't remember which was which. She randomly picked one and hoped for the best.

This batch of episodes are from channel 5 in the UK and are so much brighter and clearer and easier to watch than US ones with the NBC logo. What's up with the contrast on y'all's TVs? The US ones always look like it's night time they are so dark and fuzzy. I only recently noticed that the opening credits in the UK version are a slightly slowed down version which makes the theme more slow paced and somehow grander. I thought the US version was a jigged up remixed version. I have found out Channel 5 slowed it down to fill more time.

Okay, this is kind of fuzzy in my memory, but I recall one of the soaps introducing a gimmick (briefly) where they would intentionally drop immediate references to real-life events into already-filmed episodes in order to give the appearance that the show was operating in "real time". For example, they would film a regular episode that was intentionally one minute short. Later, in the day or two prior to it airing, they would find some timely piece of news or gossip...then have an actor or two film a one-minute extension of a scene where they mention that news/gossip. The editors would then add it to the episode to give the idea that they're all sitting around talking about current events. It would be a lot of work for very minimal effect; the actors had to go back and re-costume to match what they'd worn in the original scenes weeks before, and the news tidbit would have to be something (hopefully) relevant to a scene written weeks before. Little wonder it did not last. I can't recall for sure if it was SuBe who did this, but from the "George Michael" scene you describe, this is what it sounds like. SuBe seemed to be willing to experiment like this.

GH tried haphazardly to inject current events into the show by having characters talk about the Mayor closing a bridge, as though Port Charles was a real place then they had the mayor get upset that a character was breastfeeding in public, they went to all the trouble to recast the Mayor, for a short-term plot

This is so weird. A while ago they played Leann Rimes "How Do I Live" I think it was at Cole and Caitlyn's wedding reception which makes it even stranger. I didn't clock at the time but then a few days later I heard the song again and I was reminded that she is now married to Cole. Eddie Cibrian! Now I am watching an episode and Sean is kinda seeing Amy. He started talking to a waitress and they are talking about him and Amy always being friends but he thinks he needs more of a challenge. The waitress jokes that she saw Leann Rimes on Days Of Our Lives and she's on the west coast if he really wants a challenge. They laugh and Sean says that she's probably seeing one of those soap guys anyway. And then to top it all off who interrupts the conversation between Sean and the waitress discussing Leann Rimes? Cole!

How mad is that? Completely unintentional foreshadowing, connecting Eddie Cibrian to his future wife leann, 13 years before they would marry.

That is too funny. You should totally Tweet that to Leann or Eddie. I bet they'd get a kick out of that.

I dunno
I am being shocked. Does that mean she was younger than Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera? I always estimated her age to be more like Jennifer Lopez or Dido.
Yeah, she's born in 1982, so she's a year younger than Britney. She just broke through in 1996 and despite being 14 they styled her as a 35 year old teacher:

There was also something weirdly 80s about her styling - reminds me of the Robin Sparkles How I Met Your Mother joke about the 80s not peaking in Canada until the mid-90s, but I guess the same can be said for rural parts of the US?

Here she was as a 12 year old in 1994 (!):

I thought that she and Faith Hill were age- mates but there is 15 years of difference between them.

Does anyone know where I may find the backing tracks from Sunset Beach? I especially mean Terror Island motive and Mrs Moreau voodoo motive, which was used when she was preparing a potion. I only found a main motive and some love themes but I wonder if the rest is available in some base.

Planning a Voodoo Curse Dinner Evening?

I think what brought Leann Rimes and Eddie Cibrian together is that both have that weird thing going on with their eyes when they smile too broadly. As for her age, there are several country music stars of the 1980s/1990s (mostly women) who began their careers quite young. Like Blanche Devereaux once said, Girls in the South mature faster. She attributed it to the heat. Dorothy attributed it to the gin.

Leann clearly started in the business at 42! I don't care what she says or know what voodoo she been using to snare Eddie "big buns" Cibrian.

I have seriously blazed threw a whole batch of episodes without posting. I think my next post is going to be a long one.
