The Shapiros sued Aaron Spelling over HOTEL -- they had wanted Pamela Sue Martin to spin off into a show about Fallon running a five star lodge. But when Martin refused to do it (which infuriated Esther Shapiro) and they had Fallon take over La Mirage on DYNASTY instead, Spelling then optioned Hailey's novel just so he wouldn't have to pay the Shapiros and did the show anyway.
Even from a remote distance, it was obvious what Spelling had done.
Personally, I am convinced that not only was Joan Collins right on the money that PSM should not have quit out of Dynasty, but that Esther Shapiro had the right idea about the same-- PSM, IMO, was Fallon, up one side and down the other, and I think that Dynasty hit the point of no return when she left out of it in 1984.
