Boris Johnson has secured the highest number of votes in the first ballot to select the Conservative party leader and next prime minister.

Three contenders - Mark Harper, Andrea Leadsom and Esther McVey - have been knocked out, in the secret ballot held in the House of Commons.

Mr Johnson received 114 votes, Jeremy Hunt was second with 43, and Michael Gove third with 37 votes.

Seven candidates progress to the next round of voting next week.

The two most popular MPs will be put to Tory party members in a final vote later this month.

The winner of the contest to succeed Theresa May is expected to be announced in the week of 22 July.

The media needs to stop fawning over this idiotic and dangerous man and scrutinise Boris Johnson's record. As a Londoner I know all too well how disastrous he was when he was our mayor. These are a few highlights from his record:
  • Boris Johnson spent a £46m of taxpayers’ money on his vanity project the Garden Bridge that nobody wanted and the project was abandoned and all that money was wasted.
  • He spent £60m on constructing another of his vanity projects, The Emirates Airline - a cable car over the River Thames. It costs £500,000 a month to run and an investigation in 2015 showed that it had only 4 user a day.
  • Boris Johnson spent £300 million on yet another vanity project "The New Bus For London". £11.4m spent just on design and building the first eight. With 800 built, each cost around £375k - nearly twice the cost of a conventional double decker. They also emit 74% more harmful particles than the old buses and are uncomfortable to use because it gets unbearably hot in the summer.
  • He decided to spend £300 million to convert the Olympic Stadium to a football stadium and handed it over to his mate, Tory Baroness Karen Brady for West Ham to play there for next to nothing in rent. His deal with West Ham meant Londoners were left paying £20 million a year on the stadium upkeep while the football club rake in millions in ticket revenue.
  • Boris Johnson prioritised building multi-million pound penthouses and luxury flats that only the very wealthiest could afford, leaving most Londoners out. Only 13% of homes given permission in his final year in office were affordable and rough sleeping doubled during his time as mayor.
On top of his shocking record he has called gay men "bum boys", black children "piccaninnies with water melon smiles" and described Muslim women as looking like "bank robbers" and "letterboxes". He conspired with a friend to get a journalist beaten up and made up quotes when he was a journalist. This man is not just a joke, he is not fit to be Prime Minister.

But look at Trump. He was elected, remains in power despite the things he has done previously and continues to do.

Not the cheeriest of news, but sadly no surprise either.

Andrea Leadsom and Esther McVey - have been knocked out
Now that's cheery news.

And somewhere Lorraine Kelly is even more smiley than usual.

Right wingers will vote for any dangerous idiot as long as they promise to do right-wing stuff.

I'm not big on UK politics - even though I'm from Northern Ireland but we get left out of everything. But I do know that Andrea Loathsome was wanting to bring back abhorrent fox hunting when she was up for PM before. She can rot as far as I'm concerned!

She is a nasty piece of work but Esther McVile is even worse. She gleefully cut social security from disabled and terminally ill people, forcing some to go back to work just before they dropped dead. These Tories are nothing short of evil.

So the Brexit secretary is out (despite not knowing where France is, which could have been a big coup!)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-48680189

Dominic Raab has been knocked out of the Tory leadership race in the latest ballot of MPs, leaving five candidates in the battle to be the next PM.

Boris Johnson once again came top of the second ballot, with 126 votes - 12 more than in the first round.

Jeremy Hunt, Michael Gove, Sajid Javid and Rory Stewart also got enough votes to make it into the next round.

Mr Raab was knocked out after getting 30 votes, three less than the minimum needed.

They are all wicked right wing zealots who voted to cut benefits from the sick and disabled to fund tax cuts for their rich frieds. Francesca Martinez put it so eloquently last week on Question Time. Never forget, all five of the remaining candidates voted for this, they all have blood on their hands:

I will never miss Teresa May and will never forgive her for the appalling way she treated elderly Caribbean born Britons. She is wickedness personified.

This, more than anything, is why I dislike Theresa May so strongly.

It was her personal policy to treat the Windrush Generation so cruelly. Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt are no better, they both voted for this policy too.

@Angela Channing - that is disgusting. How dare she. I really don't understand why we have to be stuck with this government at all. Get rid of the lot of them - send them back to where they came from!
