I thought this would never see the light of day but alas, ten years later it has washed up on YouTube.

This is the 2007 pilot for the US remake of hit British series Footballers Wives. Eddie Cibrian, Lucy Lawless, Ving Rhames and James Van Der Beek were among the names in the more or less direct copy of the ultra camp UK original.

While I was hoping this would get picked up at the time, I can see why it didn't go to series. Unfortunately the fun of the original didn't cross the Atlantic. The supposed camp lines just fall a bit flat and most of the cast lack the charisma that made their UK counterparts so fun.

It's still interesting to see what could've been. Holly Robinson Peete is fun as Jackie and there's a bit of an edge to Lucy Lawless' take on the iconic Tanya but everyone else is pretty pedestrian. In an era when Desperate Housewives was still on the air, you can see why ABC weren't bothered to pick up a similarly themed, albeit lesser soap.

Oh, what a great find. I'll have to check this out. I hope curiosity doesn't kill the cat! lol

I just watched the first 25 minutes and, well, all I can say is that the men are hot, the houses are big and...mmm, that's it.
It's painfully tame compared to the original and most of them look and behave as if they were born in Beverly Hills.
The humour is as funny as instant coffee, and I think they also used the music from Desperate Housewives.

I'm working with Chardonnay from the original Footballers Wives at the moment. I just showed her this thread and she said she'd be interested in having a look at the US version!

A perfect synopsis.

I've just realised that this was in contention for the same ABC fall schedule that Dirty Sexy Money ended up premiering on. When you look at the two, DSM was definitely a cut above in terms of writing and production values, so you can see why ABC plumped for it as it's soapy addition to the schedules that year.

I think this could have worked, if only the Americans weren't always so afraid to appear as Americans. This pilot looks so, I'm not sure how to describe it...MTV-fied?
There's nothing peculiar about the characters, nothing typically American.
I'm not saying that Footballer's Wives was realistic, but you could still imagine those people as working class pretending to be high society.

I couldn't even make it 20 minutes. The humour really didn't translate at all. It's just so dull and blah.... I don't care.

Btw, did anyone think that the fish was going to shoot Jason?
I'm obviously a bit slow on the uptake today as I thought you were talking about Chardonnay's ill fated fish! I was like "did I miss a scene"

But yes, Nicole showing up in the team mascot outfit was bizarre and ridiculously unsexy. Everything about this is pretty un-erotic in comparison to the original actually. I know it's network TV from ten years ago, so I wasn't expecting Fifty Shades of Grey but it was all a bit limp. That brief glimpse of ass cleavage from Eddie Cibrian was about as raunchy as it got.

Around the same time that gay gardener on Desperate Housewives was ticking all the boxes for me and all he was doing was mowing the lawn with his shirt off. That seems raunchier than this...

I'm pretty sure they showed his bare buns too. I tried to find an image but all I got were those fakes, his face C&P'd on...well, I'm sure I don't have to describe it here.

Anway, Lucy Lawless managed to be mildly entertaining in this pilot. I wonder how she'd do on NuDynasty...

I'm not even talking about this gardener...

For me it was all about this one...

My tastes have changed quite a bit since then.
