J.R. was the main bad guy, but how did his evilness compare to Cliff Barnes and Jeremy Wendell?

I’m currently watching the season of Bobby’s return. Isn’t Cliff even more cold hearted than J.R.? Cliff is a very selfish individual. J.R. could at least be charming on the surface, he seemed happy, and he did seem to have a place in his heart for his family. I don’t think there’s anything Cliff wouldn’t have done in the name of business. I think Cliffs issue was that he just didn’t have the smarts to get things done in an underhanded way like J.R. If he had, I think he would have been a bigger force than J.R.

What about Jeremy? He wasn’t a regular, but he seemed rather cold hearted. Perhaps he lacked charm as well.

Any thoughts?

I never thought Cliff was evil (in the original series). He seems to have scruples but had an unhealthy fixation on getting JR at all cost.

Jeremy Wendell was a true rival to JR as he was cold and committed to West Star with the same zeal as JR to Ewing Oil. True, Jemery didn't have the charm or charisma that JR had.

Jeremy Wendell should have been the main foe to the Ewings in the TNT Dallas, having served his time in prison.

Cliff was just a bitter man who spent his life focused on revenge. Nobody likes bitter people. He talked incessantly about JR and how he would get revenge. JR spent his life enjoying life. He didn't talk about Cliff, aside from joking about him, unless Cliff was doing something to hurt Ewing Oil and then JR would have to do something to stop that. Otherwise, JR was happy, always smiling, and enjoying his life.

JR also didn't have any illusions about who he was and didn't pretend to be someone he wasn't. That's hard to say about Cliff or even Bobby. Sure JR was more likable than Cliff; he had to be. JR was the main focus of the series. People don't usually spend their time watching shows that are focused on someone they don't enjoy watching. When JR stopped dong well, when he started losing more than winning, Dallas stopped being one of the top two highest rated shows on TV. The fans wanted to see JR succeed. They enjoyed that.

I think you’re painting a rosey picture of JR. He was the main character and was very entertaining, but he was a BAD guy. He was the villain on Dallas for good reason.

Wendell seemed to have no outside interests, during the middle series he was focused solely on destroying Ewing Oil, in many ways to more of an extent than Cliff Barnes.

It is only in TNT Dallas that we see Cliff Barnes far more bitter than in the original series, the fact that he didn't even have much regard for Pamela's wellbeing when the explosion was planted on the oil rig states that quite obviously.

Whereas previously Cliff complained constantly about the Ewings always beating him, there never was the vindictiveness that subsequently appeared in the TNT version.

For the record,William Smithers was one of the most consistently superb supporting cast members. Dispatching him with that lame Range War story was unworthy of such s great character and fine actor.

Incidentally, Smithers is alive and well and just a few months shy of his 92nd birthday.
