I have recently been thinking about one thing that always bugged me re "Dallas", that didn´t happen in the other Lorimar soaps (I won´t mention the others produced by the goblin-looking guy, may he RIP).

Have you ever noticed that a lot of characters were missing in the original show, but that there would be in real life (usually)? I´ll list a few ones, and my proposal is trying to get some info about them, and also cast the characters, eg who would you choose to play Sue Ellen´s father, who was only mentioned a couple of times? And why would he leave (did Patricia actually kill him for the insurance money and use it for their daughters´ geisha school?)? Let´s have fun!
upload_2018-11-6_14-17-30.jpeg

"And you will be my offer to Lucifer, Baby John"

- Sue Ellen´s father, let´s call him Mr. Shepard.
- Jock´s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ewing.
- Jenna´s mother, Mrs. Wade (we did hear from Mr. Wade once in awhile in a very generic way, but who was Mama Skank?).

"My dad hated Jason Ewing. And my mum slept with him.
And we were The Skank Family!"

- Digger´s parents Mr. and Mrs. Barnes.
- Marilee Stone´s husband Seth Stone (think of it, did he ever existed? Because he never had a specific face...though he probably was very patient...)
- Donna´s parents Mr. and Mrs. McCullum (died in an accident, she really had a very hero-esque origin story, was it a conspiracy?).

Clayton´s past was a secret. Here is Grandpa "Sings with She-Wolves".

- Clayton´s wife Amy Wayne Farlow (she was relevant in the infamously ret-conned story of the Southern Cross fire, but what was she like? Did she look like Miss Ellie?).
- Mickey Trotter´s father.
- Mark Graison´s father Mark I (did he have a mustache too?) and his never mentioned mum.
- Katherine´s previous love interests (did she stalk anyone else? Was she a lesbian?). We did know about Kristin´s past but not Kathy darling´s.

"My Heart Belongs to Salem. Say something cutie"
"Meaow"

- Jamie´s ex-boyfriends (did she ever date with a dentist?).
- Mandy Winger (who was to blame for her existence?).
- (Dream Season´s) Nicholas: the character with no last name. Who was he? Was he a Marinos? Was he Angelica´s lover?

Come to think, some characters had the privilege of having a very extended background (for a soap) as for instance Mitch and Afton, Dusty and Clayton, Holly Harwood, Peter Richards, Jessica Montford, April Stevens, Nicholas Pearce, the McKays, Cally or even Hillary Taylor and LeeAnn de la Vega. My favorite is Angelica Nero because she was all about mystery. And they never bothered to get deeper into her vicious psyche.

"Hmm, Mr. Ewing. Have you had your office disinfected recently, for reptiles, let´s say?

Anyone has more ideas? Casting names?

I was always curious about Jock's parents too. So much has been devoted to the Southworths but little is known of Jock's family. Even his brother Jason is only mentioned years after Jock's death.

-Though minor, April and Michelle's father is never mentioned even when Bobby goes to visit April in Ohio.

"Why doesn't mom mention our dad in our conversations?"
I was also curious about the Ramos family that JR swindled in 1979 but never saw during the entire original run. I knew they were there in the background, playing with John Ross and Christopher and helping Raoul and Teresa but I would have liked three seasons of stories about them...... oh wait..... :confuse:

TNT Dallas background was as faithful to "Dallas" as Jamie Ewing to bras! It was pure fan-fiction (by a non-fan!) concocted in an acid "Día de los Muertos"...

The latter seasons´ characters were sort of avatars for specific storylines that worn out half-way. In the early days, April´s mother would have been a single mum and BD Calhoun a Vietnam vet with PTSD. But no, they were there just for shock value or filler.

Wilson Cryder was a no-character good for the plot development that eventually didn´t happen (JR marrying Kimberly for their shares). Jeremy Wendell, even with no background either, was an amazingly well-written, well-played character who should have been in the Opening in the latter seasons instead of McKay (or together with). When they had another great actor (like George Kennedy), they constantly re-imagined him with awful second-rate storylines out of "Hotel"´s "unused plots not even good for an Aaron Spelling production".

When I remember scenes like the one in your signature between Michelle and Bobby, I think that Michelle should have been April, or that April should have been played by Kimberly Foster instead. At least she was over-the-top and unapologetic. Her sister was a pain in the a*s with her whining about Bobby´s girls and so on. With a good writer behind, April´s introduction might have led to something substantial instead of that silly trial and becoming Cliff´s platonic friend. Not going to get into her "love story" with Bobby...

Seth Stone appeared at least once in early episodes (it may have been a different actor each time), and even got a little speaking time extolling the virtues of fracking in Julie's Return - quite a low side-part, eh? Interestingly, in Election, when the cartel boys are sitting in JR's office brainstorming about who should take on Cliff Barnes in the State Senate election, Don Starr is sitting right there on the couch, but a different guy is clearly referred to as 'Jordan'... maybe Don's supposed to be Seth in that scene?

Thanks a lot @Taylor Bennett Jr.! I knew I had read something like that somewhere but my little brain loses bits of info every day...Maybe Jordan already was scheming with Sheila Foley and usurping personalities...? Nothing is random on "Dallas" and has something to do with something else (just the opposite than on "Dynasty", ahem)...

Anyway, I always found fascinating the fact that Seth had to die (and by suicide!) to give wonderful Fern Fitzgerald more than bitchy comments here and there. When we get to see someone´s mansion, as we did with Marilee on Part 2 of "No More...", that undoubtedly means that the actor had a raise and will be appearing more often...though Marilee was wasted until her affair with J.R.

LOL, agreed!

So true. I think in the later years there were some good ideas but many of them were poorly written.

Even though I liked Carter McKay I do prefer Jeremy Wendell as the true rival to JR and Ewing Oil. I had wished he would have been the main rival to JR in the TNT Dallas not this evil Cliff Barnes we got.

Very interesting idea. I certainly think Michelle had enormous potential if her stories were better written and better paced.

I don't ever remember if Valene's parents were mentioned - perhaps, they were addressed in KL, I haven't watched - but it would have been nice to know whether they played a part in Val's life. Why didn't they help her raise Lucy alone, instead of Jock and Miss Ellie?

Valene's mama Lilimae played a huge part on Knots Landing. She was portrayed by Julie Harris. :)

I dunno
- Katherine´s previous love interests (did she stalk anyone else? Was she a lesbian?). We did know about Kristin´s past but not Kathy darling´s.
This could've been a minor storyline - ie someone starts suspecting of Katherine being on the crazy side (Pam? Afton?) and decides to research her past, only to find out that she's had a history of unstable behavior with ex boyfriends. Or that all of them are dead.

Great thread.

I have always been curious about Sue Ellen's father. I think it would have been lovely to have him show up and see her, to support her and to kick JR's ass about for a while.

For some reason (I know I know but I do have a huge crush on this man), I always envisioned it to be (sorry I know). George Hamilton. Yes. The SunTan Man is Sue Ellen's dad.

George Hamilton is just a year older than Linda so unless it's a daytime soap opera he's too young to play her dad! ;)

:omg: Em.. It was a JOKE @Karin Schill - of course I know he's only a year older than Linda... I was just enjoying the thread and having fun as @Toni said.

George is just how I imagined Mr Shepard. :hat:

Okay I've probably spent way too much time on this. But this is how I imagine it.

Miss Ellie's parents were Anna & Aaron Southworth. My casting of the characters would be:

mp-104-l.jpg

Douglas Fairbanks & Mary Pickford
(1883-1939) (1892-1979)

Miss Ellie's grandfather was Enoch Southworth. For him I would cast:
William-S-Hart.jpg

William S. Hart
(1864-1946)

Then as for Jock's side of the family, we don't know the name of his relatives.

But I think his dad would be named John Ewing and the casting would be:

TomMix41.jpg

Tom Mix
(1880-1940)

His mother's name would be Julia and the casting would be:

lawrence-1.jpg

Florence Lawrence
(1886-1938)

Then as for Sue Ellen, we already know her mother was Patricia as portrayed by Martha Scott.

So for her dad I would pick one of Martha's co-stars from an old movie:

william-holden-1.jpg

William Holden
(1918-1981)

We had some information on Miss Ellie's upbringing but nothing about Jock's. He was the one main character whom we didn't know anything about how he was raised, what his parents were like, or what they did for a living.

in a draft of the pilot script, Cliff refers to Bobby as "Leander Ewing's grandson" in the scene where he and Pam visit Digger in the bar to tell him of the marriage... this didn't make it to the actual episode:

http://www.ultimatedallas.com/scripts/pilot.pdf

interestingly, aunt Maggie is in there as well, but I don't think she appears until a few episodes into Season 1
