What do you do with it, or what is it used for?

It's an app that collects all the numbers from friends and family you have on your phone and shares them without permission with facebook and other interested companies to use them for personalized ads and other stuff that noone really knows. In exchange for that you get a little chat functionality.
Common argument for people to use it nevertheless is "because everybody does it".
I don't. I'm not selling my friends and family to the industry, let alone without their permission. But i'll probably get killed for that by the NSA someday. ;)

Actually, we had an option not to allow WhatsApp to use our contacts (we were given a heads up)and we used it.

Using WhatsApp is like sending text messages but it is more upgraded. It has become a valuable working tool.. at least it for me, it's an inseparable part of my work. You have the ability to send pictures and video clips easily, plenty of emoticons and you have an ability to form discussion groups for all kinds of purposes. This makes it easier to stay in touch with family members, neighbors, co- workers, etc.

It has some downsides of course, such as others can monitor whether you've read their messages and ignored them. Also, sometimes the frequency of the messages can get annoying..

But I don't know anyone who doesn't use it.

I guess you're right, Hatayas..... o_O I can't recall which option I chose when signing up....?? I do believe that WhatsApp is free to use as opposed to mainline text messages.... I guess that's the main reason most folks decided to join it, depending on their individual payment plan in regards to the amount of inclusive text messages...?

I get all that and more with my iPhone.

With my Samsung Galaxy too. Not that I ever use the group discussion function anymore. I don't need What's App. I have free surf & free sms/mms etc included in my monthly cost.

Probably Music, E-mail, and Google Chrome. I'm not really on my phone a lot and I don't have an iphone or facebook, either.

iPhones are on it's way out is a general feeling I have. It was super popular 5-10 years ago, but I see more people having Android phones these days. Mostly Samsung Galaxy or Sony Xperia. I have a Samsung Galaxy myself, and I will continue with Android. My old iPhone 4 is great for offline Spotify songs. No need for a sim-card in it.
