This 2 part documentary on Savile is an horrific watch because you know the gut punch that it's going to give you.

Part 1 focuses very much of the man himself, his career, charity work etc. It also coneys just how well in he was with the Royals and Number 10 - untouchable.

Part 2 then delves into his historic sexual abuse and it truly shocking even knowing most of the facts.

I still to this day have no idea how the tabloid media didn't get to grips with him when he was still alive, but then again he had friends in very high places. He had an involvement in over 50 hopsitals and I doubt we will ever know the full extent of his evilness.

A very informative documentary that does surprise with some facts that I wasn't aware of. Full of interviews with well known UK news broadcasters too, it gives a different insight than other "This is what he did" documentaries.

But will still make you sick to the bottom of your stomach.

I finished watching this last night. What surprised me the most was how Savile seemed to hint at the abuse he was carrying out with throwaway comments to the media. There was even a clip in which he seemed to sexually abuse a girl while he was doing a piece to camera for a TV show he was presenting. A truly vile man.

I think the "It was good while it lasted" he wanted on his grave was a disgustingly vile thing for him to want, he just couldn't stop himself from hinting of what was to come. So sad they didn't get him when he was still alive.

For me though it was the clip of him and Gary Glitter joking about having sex with the young girls - all caught on camera and yet no one did or said a thing.

There seems to be a pattern with a lot of these guys that almost wants people to "know" -- kind of a shock-effect perv-hiding-in-plain-sight sort of thing which one guesses is part of the narcissism.

I mean, who was the famous pedo who maintained the online moniker "Ifukkids"...?

is that someone who wants to get caught? Or someone sending out dog-whistle alerts to the like-minded? Or maybe both?

The ambiguous use of the term "young girls" so we now know they meant children but back then people would have assumed they meant young women. However, when he was on Have I Got News For You, Savile said something like "I'm feared in girl schools up and down the country" and there is absolutely no ambiguity about what he was saying there.

that makes me think of when songs used to have little girl in songs and they weren't singing about children either but since that would no doubt refer to that it's no longer in music. or Gay means something entirely Different now but back in the 60's it meant Beautiful

It was a really well make documentary, really uncovering how he managed to do it.

What I struggle to believe is that people didn't know. That culture where the BBC didn't allow producers to out him as it would spoil their celebrations. How many other times did they turn a blind eye.

This should have all come to light when he was alive.

I think he was so prolific that it's inconceivable that some people didn't suspect but chose not to believe it because he was so beloved and because with them personally he never showed any signs of his depravity, as was the case with the female journalist from Leeds.
This should have all come to light when he was alive..
It's not like the police didn't have opportunities. It is their failure to follow up adequately on the evidence they had that enabled him to avoid prosecution.

there are a lot of celebrities that have done shit that should be in jail for i mean look at all the idiots who do shit in sports 9 times out of 10 they get off on what crime they committed. i mean sure there's like a 2 % of the time where they pay for their crime but i remember a case where a few years ago there was these college kids these football players i forget which college it was i want to say Florida maybe? they raped this girl than the video was leaked online afterwords not of the rape but at a party they were at and they were bragging about it and they still got off from any kind of punishment and it was only cause they were well gods among the idiots down where this took place cause they played football so they got off and as far as i know prolly raping other women women cause they should be jail right now but i don't think they are. stuff like that pisses me off the community there cared more about their precious sports than they did about justice for that girl how f... up is that?

I think it was more likely they wanted to keep their top talent in a good light, even now we have celebs doing things that others would be fired for but instead they turn it into a story of redemption to keep them.

The mindset was sadly different back then,

I have no doubt that some at the BBC protected him but it doesn't explain why the media didn't report on the story or why hospitals would value their association with him above the safety of their patients. I think people based what believed on their personal interactions with Savile rather than on evidence provided by other people. If they became aware of stories of his abuse they would think the Jimmy Savile they knew wouldn't be capable of doing that. He was clever is establishing personal relationships with the right people to avoid detection.

There is also the timing element in all this.
There wasn’t the focus of child abuse while this evil predator was doing his rounds. He filled kids hearts with his ‘Fix It’ show. My sister was on the regional news for something she was involved in with her school. This man was in the studio and she sat on his lap. I remember feeling proud for hernow I just feel sick with what I know. Her memories are that he didn’t do anything, but all I think is she was around 6 years at the time and wouldn’t know if anything inappropriate did happen.

He was forever praised for his work in charity and that helped to keep his evil predatory ways.

Like many evil people in this world, he was dead before he paid for any of his crimes.

I agree with @Angela Channing - no one was reporting anything at the time the abuse was happening. People slammed the BBC but unless there was a clear and specified report of abuse what could they possibly have done? Likewise the media didn't report any incidents and back then the tabloids would print absolutely anything that was sensational - they were not worried about being hauled up in court and Savile would never have challenged it for fear of people coming forward.

I remember Esther Rantzen speaking after the new hit, she always suspected there was something wrong with Savile but without any reports or confirmations what could anyone possibly do?

When you look at the scale of what he did and to how many it's unbelievable that he covered his tracks so well - he knew exactly when and how to feed his evil deeds and walk away to prey on others.

His connections with royalty, charities and politicians tells you how well he was thought of, so why the BBC got the brunt of attacks is beyond me because no one had any kind of proof and the police botched it big time when victims came forward.

The BBC have got rid of people for a great deal less than rumors of sexually abusing kids.

Can you imagine? It's not shop lifting, actual rumors and accusations of sexually assaulting children. Yet they did nothing.

They knew the rumors that is definate. Then they tried to stop the stop the story.

The trouble was that Savile had some seriously high up friends and the BBC would never risk those in powers that could throw all kinds of legislation at them without solid proof and there wasn't any.

Likewise with Rolf Harris, Stuart Hall and Dave Lee Travis, who all thankfully got caught while they were still alive.

I'm not sure what more the BBC could have done. The police decided there was insufficient evidence to investigate the crime and the BBC had to accepted that because they couldn't take action on unsubstantiated rumours. The failure in my view lies with the police who were more interested in having cosy tea parties with Savile than investigating his disgusting crimes.

If I remember correctly, they started to investigate him not long after he was dead, which makes me wonder if that was because they weren’t confident enough to do this while he was still alive.

I remember when the news broke out and we had a very heated thread on here with many members (at the time) feeling it was a witch hunt and he was innocent. Using the ‘why investigate now when he’s dead?’ and ‘they are doing this now because he can’t defend himself’

Anyone remember that thread?

I'm not completely sure of the time line but I think the police only became interested once the journalist that was looking into his crimes aired his findings in an ITV documentary. Had the journalist not gone public with his evidence, who knows whether or not the police would have reopened their investigation on Jimmy Savile?
