How close do you think we are to World War Three? Russia is poised to invade the Ukraine and its seeming alliance with China is disturbing. The United States is seriously divided and after the withdrawal from Afghanistan could appear weak. Could a conflict over Ukraine embolden China to invade Taiwan, leading to escalated hostilities?

The situation on the Ukraine border is scary and I don't see how it can be resolved in the short term. Ukraine as a sovereign nation should be allowed to join any alliance it wishes but Russia won't back down on its demand on never allowing Ukraine to join NATO. The build up of Russian troops and them moving closer to the Ukraine border looks ominous. I just can't see what a solution might look like.

It’s a very scary situation and to answer your question, yes, I do think it can lead to a World War if something doesn’t give soon. I hate saying that in this day and age but it is unfortunately a possibility.

It is the USA and Britain that are the drivers of this conflict. Imagine if Mexico or Canada were to form a strategic and defensive alliance with Russia do you think America would tolerate that?

Although I think countries should be free to form alliances, it's unquestionable that the expansion of NATO has can be seen as a threat to Russia so I understand their concerns. It's the balance between both these positions that makes the resolution of this situation so difficult.

The 2020s are rapidly becoming as chaotic as the 1960s were, both were as a result of the preceding decades (1950s & 2010s) stifling witch-hunting sadly

As for this possible WW3, well sadly I do think war will happen, the US is in chaos and is more divided than ever before, Russia is taking advantage of this to flex its muscles and China will do the same with Taiwan, I don’t see a clean end to this.

I do hope you’re wrong but sadly I don’t think you are. Everything seems to be moving that way right now and it’s more than a little unnerving.

Not to ressurect an old thread but Russian historian Peter Turchin explains the phenomenon we are experiencing today, this feeling of impending political doom and losing faith in democracy and its constitutions by 2 drivers of instability 1-elite overproduction and 2-popular immiseration. The elites learn the hard way but then they die and not knowing how catastrophic the combination of the 2 is the new elites aspire for more leaving less of the scraps to the poor and they cycle repeats itself. I would definetely recommend checking Turchin's work out.

Given what's going on in the middle east today, how Bibi seems to be trying to evoke military conflict with most of his neighbors (and Biden's team and weapons contractors backing him up -- occasionally wagging our finger in disingenuous disapproval at the IDF's genocidal excesses in Gaza), I've begun to suspect that somebody high up in the shadowy leadership ranks may literally be pushing WW3, "just to get it over with" and sort out the messy aftermath once it's happened.

Others seem to have begun wondering the same thing.

60 years ago, we were saved from this crap because Kennedy and Khruschev were rational men (and both paid the price for it by the hawks in their respective governments).

But who is rational now? Will Putin, of all people -- this man reviled by the west (with some cause, admittedly) -- be the one who pulls us out of this looming global disaster?
