That is something that I remember first happening with that demo disc of Star Trek: TNG on Blu-- forget exactly which episode it was that had the upscale for lost film elements.
I remember that. But that was a very short piece of footage as I recall. There are full scenes on the remaster that still have to use the video source but the good outweighs the bad.

Looked it up on EBay, and it was "Sins of the Father" on that TNG Blu demo that had the upscale.

sometime 2005 (i guess)
Yeah, that was a short scene with Dr. Crusher and Riker talking at a console.

But CBSdigital found the missing film elements after this demo release, inserted it back and in the actual season box and on streaming services the episode is now completely in HD! Same goes for some other scenes that were found AFTER the Bluray boxset releases and those were then also inserted back into the episodes.
For the Blurays it was too late of course, but on streaming those scenes are now HD as well.

Sometimes missing snippets are misplaced into other film cans, where they don't belong. You just have to really search for it. They said in the Bluray bonus material, that they went through hundreds of boxes/tins with cut elements and different angle shots and finally found that missing piece.

So Warners should go back and really look for this stuff, it sure is somewhere to be found!
Until very recently it was said, there could never be an HD release of Dallas at all, because ALL original film was destroyed. What a bs that was.

How odd. When we consider the business Warner Bros are in why would they even contemplate destroying film? I personally have all my negatives from the moment I began photography as this will always be my go to source material if I lose the photograph. Then we have the cultural significance of Dallas. This series alone changed the television landscape forever...and not just in America.

I'm just shocked someone in that organisation would think let's throw out the film stock as no one will be watching this in the future.

True. But not only Warner, some CBS spokesman at the time (15 or so years ago) said similar crap about MacGyver, and two years ago, all 7 seasons "magically" appeared rescanned in glorious HD in their archive. Surprise, surprise!

The most famous example of this shortsightedness in regards to retaining all broadcast elements of a TV series is of course the BBC's Doctor Who. The junking of stories from the William Hartnell and Patrick Troughon era's means there are just over 90 episodes missing from the archives. Thankfully audio recordings exist for all the stories which has resulted in animated releases of quite a few of the missing stories.

Sad that Dallas has been affected in a similar way so we can't have fully HD episodes where some have only been upscaled. Both Doctor Who and Dallas are ground breaking shows and in a way it's fitting that 2023 is Dallas's forty fifth anniversary and Doctor Who's sixtieth anniversary. Happy anniversary to both of them. :)

In regards to Dallas we're only talking about a few scenes missing the 35mm footage, not full episodes. Doctor Who's missing footage is on a different level.
