They obviously intended at some point to recast the role with another actor. :)
Maybe, but it's hard to imagine they thought like that when Jim died after treating him with such dignity.

Probably just wanted to leave their options open at the time.

I’ve always thought it was left open and the body was never found because it helped to fuel the upcoming storylines in a way. The whole storyline of Jock having to be declared legally dead and the court hearing doesn’t happen otherwise.

Good point.

I've often wondered if Jock really would have approved of JR's behaviour if he'd still been alive.

Even before Jock's death and he was away JR stockpiled oil so Clayton would throw Sue Ellen and John Ross off The Southern Cross. Miss Ellie then negotiated with Clayton for him to buy it back.

In a heated argument about keeping JR in control of Ewing Oil Miss Ellie says, "If your Daddy had been here, he never would've put up with that and I'm not going to" then later, "I understand your reasons but I detest your methods".

Would Jock have approved of JR's behaviour, just to get John Ross back on Southfork as JR justified that's why he did it? Was Jock really that ruthless?

Miss Ellie brilliant here, "sit down JR!"

I think Jock would’ve most certainly approved. When Jock was still alive in South America he told J.R. in a phone conversation that he wanted John Ross back on the ranch. J.R. himself conveyed just how upset Jock was at the situation and I’m sure he took it as he’d better get his son back by any means necessary to please his daddy.

I remember JR saying to Miss Ellie that Jock knew all about it, about something he'd done, but Miss Ellie said, "Well he couldn't have known how you intended to go about it".

Either JR was fibbing about his version that Jock knew and approved or Miss Ellie was extremely blind to Jock's behaviour and didn't think for one minute he would approve.

I would say no. I imagine Jock would have headed down to confront Clayton Farlow face-to-face and once Clayton set Jock straight as to the tactics J.R. was employing, Jock would have given Junior a lecture about how to better handle the matter.

Well Jock did lecture JR once on the act of being subtle.

So I can see Jock taking matters into his own hands like when he wanted to sell the Asian oil leases. :)

I think it suited Jock to allow JR to act ruthless when he wanted and allow him free reign.

Then in some situations Jock would take charge and let JR know who was the boss and suddenly become all moral.

Miss Ellie has been called a hypocrite, Jock was very hypocritical when it came to JR. One minute he's encouraging JR's behavior, the next he's on his moral high horse.

Jock could definitely be quite polarizing. At the end of the miniseries he tries to appeal to Pam to stay so he can keep his family together, but then just a short while later when she spills the beans about Cliff in Election he’s okay with destroying him, not caring what it would do to Pam or the problems it may cause for she and Bobby.

They both were to a certain extent and they only seemed to claim the moral high ground when it was their own personal interests which were being compromised. Such as JR mortgaging Southfork without saying anything to his parents in order to fund the Asian Oil leases. That wouldn't have come to light if Bobby hadn't discovered what he was doing. Both Jock and Miss Ellie were furious with him for risking their home over an oil deal even if it was worth billions. :)

Yes, although Miss Ellie was seen as strong, all those Ewing women still had to bow down and know their place in Jock's world.
Ewing women shouldn't work and their job is to keep their Ewing men happy, regardless if Jock and JR cause problems in the marriage.

It was a brave woman who stood up to Jock. Pam did at the beginning over Digger, but the best was Sue Ellen in paternity suit. She really put Jock in his place and told him what's what while Harve Smithfield looked on aghast.

Although in Election I now recall Pam ranting at JR and Jock in the office about how they destroyed Cliff. Shame it was such an emotional outburst because her words were very powerful which they both just shrugged off.

I didn't like the way it was handled at all
I always thought there should have been a recast
No disrespect to the amazing Jim Davis, but Jock was
central to the narrative, and the show was never quite the same for me, without him.
Season 6 battle for Ewing Oil was good, though.
I think the series ending in "Conundrum" should have been
Bobby walking into JR's room, finding him sad and melancholy,
and saying 'JR, someone is here to see us, and I think we should listen to him'
Steve Forrest walks in and says 'It is time to get back Ewing Oil from Barnes'
