My wife and I were having a conversation earlier about definitive, or standout, episodes of sitcoms. Our discussion consisted primarily of older sitcoms, but this thread can banner sitcoms from any era.

Some episodes we discussed:

"Chuckles Bites the Dust" - MARY TYLER MOORE
"Turkeys Away" - WKRP IN CINCINNATI
"Vivian's First Funeral" - MAUDE

These are three that I am remembering right now. There were more episodes we discussed, I'm sure, but my mind is slipping at the moment.

What other episodes come to your mind as definitive sitcom episodes?

Also:
"Step by Step": The one guest-starring Susan Blakely and Patrick mentioning Victoria (yes, that Victoria...).
"Soap": The one with Doris Roberts playing the priest´s mother who wants to strangle Corinne.
I´ll think of more...

Barney Miller, "Hash" (OAD Thursday, December 30, 1976 on ABC)

This was one of the defining episodes of that ABC police comedy, because it showed how the detectives working under Capt. Miller (but not Miller himself) got stoned on hashish unknowingly baked into brownies that Wojo brought in; it had so many powerfully funny lines that many fans still remember it to this day, as fans of other shows would remember similar quality episodes.
