sure, the Dream Season may not have been officially ‘canon’ according to some, and the subject never came up otherwise, but Jenna was pretty convincing:

and notably, among the many many things Bobby said over the years, we never heard:

“I hate emeralds!”

or

“I admire diamonds alone among the precious gemstones of the world!”

or

“I’m going to take you apart for preferring sapphires!”

or anything like that..

Could it be that he’d secretly been a big emerald fan all along, even prior to the New Orleans elopement and subsequent hot and/or cold gas station breakfast?

When Jock gave Digger a hundred for Pam I look at this as Bobby’s opportunity to bring up the emeralds as payment instead. Would Digger have liked emeralds? Hard to say really. Perhaps only if they could be traded in at the local pubs.
it’s quite possible that Digger’s otherworldly sense for knowing where to drill for oil may have extended to emerald mining and who knows what else, which lends an extra poignancy to Pam’s dream of Matt Cantrell.

I also like to think that when Bobby gives Pam the Corvette early on that a good line on her part would’ve been “But you promised me emeralds!” Too bad this scene wasn’t written this way ‘cause then maybe the dream season much later might’ve made more sense. All we needed was one insignificant reference somewhere at sometime to an emerald but I just can’t find it.

maybe when Bobby asked Pam, “what am I, a bowl of chili?” she could have come back with “well, you’re certainly no bag of emeralds as long as you’re on the road and not in the executive suite!”

Or maybe when Lucy was buying jewelry at the Store to take to the pawn shop to support her harrowing pill habit she could have gotten something emerald-themed “for Bobby” in an attempt to fool Pam.

Alex Ward getting Pam an emerald necklace or belly button ring would have catapulted that storyline to the stratosphere. Even Senator Bobby couldn’t have ignored that.

(good thing I wasn’t a writer for the show!)
