I mean, their public pages are meant to be perused by the public at large... Right?

But I recently peaked into the Youtube channel of someone I knew years ago, and watched his 7-hour long video of his trip through Portugal with his family. (I did break it up into two or three nights). And after it was all over, I felt like I'd just visited Portugal myself! (He's a funny and attentive husband and father so, of course, his wife, resigned to her life disappointment, and entitled teenaged daughters, seemed contemptuous of him, even slightly embarrassed).

Someone else I used to know years ago has a skydiving video. And over the last decade, I've watched it literally dozens of times -- to the point I'd inadvertently pushed its once-meager "views" count sky high comparatively.

Does anyone else ever do that, leaving you a little sheepish, as if you're snooping?

There's this one person that I've actively looked up on the internet and I found a little bit related to that person's business. I'm sure I could find a lot more on social media but I don't have those accounts myself which makes it impossible to read anything.
I hadn't thought of youtube yet, it's possible that my sweet little prey has uploaded something.

I'm not a social media person at all either. I never post anything ever (unless it's here at The Talk). But I only have a FB page to skulk around -- and I rarely ever even do that. I think I joined Twitter when it first came out, but it's for celebrities and I don't remember my codes and have never posted. I never joined Instagram, and they tell me that TikTok lets the Chinese spy on me and allows me to read American independent news sources and thus must be stopped.

My lonelyfools page is going all guns blazing, by the way.

I like to take a peek every once in awhile into the social media of people I went to high school with. I never reconnect with any of them though. I probably should but I’m never really sure what to say. After all it’s been over 30 years and I’m assuming most of them don’t even remember me anymore. Recently I noticed that my best friend from high school is now an author. I really wasn’t surprised because I remember him always being an excellent writer. I ended up on his website and for a second I thought about reaching out privately to at least congratulate him on his success but changed my mind.

In the beginning Facebook was a great medium to look up old friends, especially school friends. But as Facebook kept moving the goal posts regarding security and those telling signs Facebook was watching my internet travels I gave them the flick.

I loath social media and the impact it's had on the wider community. The general public I believe have become angrier, short fused. A work colleague is currently travelling thru Europe so I signed up to Instagram just to follow him. I have 1 follower; him. I made the account private and don't post anything except to reply to his stunning photos which I've always had an interest in.

I knew my college roommate had become a realtor after we graduated, so I will occasionally pull up his site to see what he's selling. And like all realtors, his site seems to sell HIM more than it sells overpriced homes and condos.

We are less than a year apart in age, so I hope that botox-y, vaguely AI look he currently sports in the main page is not a sign that I'm living on borrowed time myself.

When Facebook was gaining popularity a woman I was seeing demonstrated it to me. She was using it a tool to pry into the lives of people she knew, people she disliked (judging by her comments but still having them as "friends") and most disturbing of all, researching people looking for something to weaponize against them if and when.

I don't use social media for that reason. Snooping hold no interest, and how much would be embellishments.
