Riveting stuff. A lot in there about Cunanan that I didn't know. It's one hell of a story. I've been meaning to get round to watching The assassination of Gianni Versace: American crime story. Have you seen it?

Yes, it's a compelling thing. I haven't seen the fictionalized version yet but want to.

Yesterday I watched episode 2 (the American Crime Story version) and it's very different from season 1.
To be honest I don't know much about Versace but he seemed like a passionate man. His residence is not just big and opulent, it's beautiful with lots of personal details. I like people who appreciate beauty and beautiful things, and maybe that's why this crime story looks so sad and depressing.

The killer, a handsome male whore, is extremely unlikeable.
It all feels like such a waste.

I have to confess to a bit of a fascination with sordid high society crime. I have no use whatever for the kinds of downmarket domestic trailer park murders which have been painted across the small screen in recent years (a la 48 HOURS of DATELINE in the States, but I'm assuming most of the western media is doing the same nowadays) unless there's something really unique about them.

But add a genuinely upscale element to them, and my interest is piqued.

Is that the DYNASTY wannabe-good part of my brain, I ask you??

So I can watch Dominick Dunne's POWER, PRIVILEGE & JUSTICE and wish it was on DVD, but I can't stomach the other shows.

Hmm, just finished episode 4 and I must say it's getting a bit tiresome. At first it had a "Talented Mr Ripley" vibe but most of Cunanan's scenes are one-on-one, and it's so much easier to manipulate an individual rather than a group of people.
But anyway, he's bad and he's a faker but do I need to watch 5 more episodes to realize that? It almost feels like glorification of the serial killer.

It's certainly not as compelling as the first series (O.J.) but all the Versace scenes are nice.

Interesting. Very often a good documentary trumps a dramatic recreation.

BTW: I love RIPLEY -- and Cunanan really is Ripley, isn't he?

I'm now watching the documentary you've posted (to cut to the chase) and I just realized why I don't like this story.
It's like Judith Light's character Marylin Miglin said "I don't want to know what he thinks or why he does it, I just want him to get caught".
That's exactly how I feel about this man: he doesn't deserve my curiosity and attention. He's vile but not special and I don't want to know him.

However, what does fascinate me is the massive blunder that gave Cunanan the opportunity to escape.
They were tracking him via Miglin's car phone and that information got leaked to the press (how???)
But the worst part is that they decided to broadcast this information. If they hadn't done that, two of his victims could still be alive.
Are they not somehow responsible?

Adam Lanza who killed 20 six and seven year-olds in December 2012 in Connecticut. He called into a radio show a year before his massacre identifying as "Greg" and discusses a local chimp raised as a human child in Newtown where the chimp went crazy and had to be destroyed.... Adam/Greg is disarmingly articulate (he speaks at around ~15:00) and seems, in retrospect, to relate to the chimp.

The Texas Tower shooting -- like the murder of the 7 nurses a year later -- was somehow emblematic of the stark, post-apocalyptic vibe of the third quarter of the 1960s.

These things used to happen every few years or decades. Today, it's every few hours... This might not warrant any mention if it happened in 2022, pushed off the front page by another shooting spree (especially if someone is misgendered in the melee).
