Jane Wyman in 1989, presenting the Day Time Soap Award to......

It is sad to see how frail Miss Wyman was then, with diabetes and arthritis but she battled on for another 18 years. Then she came back to close FC in spring 1990, despite what her doctor said.

In 1989 David Selby received Soap Opera Digest's Outstanding Actor in a Leading Rôle: Prime Time award.
It would have been nice if Jane had given it to her but I guess Jane was too proud for that.

There were already problems when she had to give an award to Lana Turner, the organizers were unaware that she hated her

The SOD Awards were an extension/evolution of their "Soapy" awards, which were done via ballots included in the magazine. Though the televised Soap Opera Digest Awards were no longer voted on directly by fans/readers, there was always the feeling that the winners were more than just favorite actors/shows of the magazine's editors, since those who won the trophies tended to be covered more (and more favorably) by SOD than perhaps they deserved. It is a "one hand washes the other" type of situation where a show will benefit from SOD's frequent articles/chatter, while SOD benefits from the fans of that show buying more copies of the magazine. So while a show like Ryan's Hope might have been an objectively better soap (for example), they were never going to sweep the SOD Awards the way they might have swept the Daytime Emmys because RH did not offer its actors for interviews in the magazine as often, and RH fans didn't buy enough magazines to merit lots of positive coverage in the magazine. In short, the SOD Awards were never about objective quality the way the Daytime Emmys attempt to be, and not even on par with the People's Choice Awards as a popularity contest (as their Soapys had been). The SOD Awards were simply the editors of SOD rewarding certain shows, performers, and PR firms for helping them sell magazines over the course of the previous year.

SOD had more access to Knots's actors and producers for interviews/features/spoilers than the other three nighttime soaps, and that translated into SOD treating KL as their "favorite" soap, regardless of other factors. Which is not to say they did not deserve recognition---KL did have a well-deserved reputation for producing a superior product. In daytime, a different situation occurred with Days of our Lives, which got much more ink in their magazine than the higher-rated Y&R, AMC, and GH....and that cozy relationship reflected in their outsized representation in the SOD Awards. The old joke was that SOD stood for "Salem Overdose," with Salem as the fictitious town where DOOL is set. The favoritism of the SOD editors toward the shows that "played ball" with them became so pronounced that a competing publication, Soap Opera Weekly, sprang up with the mission statement to cover all the soaps equally and was very popular for a decade or so. Of course as soap viewership declined the soap press also declined, leading to the closure of most soap magazines other than SOD, though it is a shell of its former self. Events like the Soap Opera Awards also fell by the wayside, as even the Daytime Emmys faded into obscurity and lost its cache as a primetime event.

That makes sense, because by all accounts Days of our Lives was a bit lost by the late 80s/early 90s because they were in "super couple" overdrive except they kept churning out couples that really didn't have the impact of earlier (Julie / Doug, Marlena / Roman, Bo / Hope etc). They were also starting to churn through headwriters at this time again until they landed with James E. Reilly (they had a similar problem in the mid-70s to early 80s post Bill Bell / Pat Falken Smith).

Jane looked pretty good in that clip, better than she did in the final season of Falcon Crest.
Jane was hospitalized on February 20 de 1989. After Resurrection was shot, the rest of the episodes were shot after she was released from the hospital.

The first Soap Opera Digest Award show aired in 1984, and was featured on national syndicated television and hosted by then husband and wife Catherine Hickland and David Hasselhoff. One of the reasons for the move up was the new-found audience of both Daytime and Prime time soap operas. That year for the first time awards were given to prime time soap operas as well as daytime soaps. This practice was phased out in the 1990s as primetime soap operas began to lose the large appeal they once had.

For the first two years, fans themselves voted on the nominees list as well as the winners. Ballot stuffing and a voting bloc for the 1985 awards led to the side effect where Days of Our Lives swept almost every category. The third awards were changed so that the editors of the magazine chose the nominees and each reader was allowed only one ballot to vote for their favorites. This allowed other shows such as Santa Barbara and Another World to take home trophies. A change in award season from the end of the year to the beginning meant that there was no show in 1987.

What's sad about the newspaper article you attached to your post was how much information was in it that could only have been provided by an hospital insider. Facts that should have been confidential appear to have been given (probably sold) to the newspaper at a time when she was very ill and should have expected better from those who were treating her.

The only confidential thing is about the children.
But well after the book that Michael Reagan wrote and the declarations of Mauren's boyfriend to the biography of Nancy Reagan. shouldn't surprise us

Jane Wyman was a trooper, of the highest calibre. When she was encouraged out of retirement by Earl Hamner to lead FALCON CREST, her lust for acting was rekindled. Season 9 would have been of higher quality had she been in all episodes. Sadly Jane due to her illnesses didn't do much T.V. or movie work, after FC 'Home Again.' In fact just DR. QUINN MEDICINE WOMAN, in 1993.

Jane Wyman speaks about the final episode and how the show altered in the twilight years, ('behind the scenes'; from season 9, 1989 - '90):

"I wanted to tie up the show, mention everyone who was gone; the grandfather, Melissa, Cole and Maggie, so that the loyal audience we had wouldn't feel cheated, if they had been taken in a different direction by the producers that they didn't understand (and frankly I didn't either). It was a wonderful experience but I wasn't sorry to see it end because of the way it was going. The first six years of the show were marvellous. Then they started tampering with it. I get so much mail from people saying that they can't understand what happened."

The article holds lots of details which should be private such as the age she gave to the hospital, information about Lorenzo visiting her, details of her medical condition and much more.

Lorenzo's visit. The problem is that NO ONE else from the cast visited her.
As for his health, the delicate state of his health was always made public. That the doctors had forbidden her to shoot anymore.
But she lived 16 more years after finishing the series and when she was interviewed for Vanity Fair in September of that year, the journalist saw her as a little thin but apparently in good health.

I don't think Barbara Stanwyck would have brought the same level of wit and expression playing Angela, as Jane Wyman. She was good as Connie Colby though.

You know it sure would have been interesting if Jane and Barbara as two Golden Hollywood starlets had some FC screentime, after The Colbys went off into a galaxy far far away. I heard they were good friends in real life. Could Barbara have been on Rod Taylor's arm, making Janey's Angela green with jealously?

I'm surprised Susan Sullivan at least didn't visit her. Susan always spoke so highly of Jane in any interview I've read.

Susan came to Spain in the 1990s, they had already FIRED him from Falcon Crest in the ninth season and they asked him
Jane Wyman, the actress who plays «Angela Channing», is as arrogant as she appears in «Falcon Crest»?
Jane as an actress is back from everything. She is a case apart, she considers that she is above the other co-stars. If it weren't for the fact that she always thinks she's number one, Jane would be a very interesting woman to learn by her side.
