Terrible news Fred was a real one off classic character. John played him to perfection. I remember writing to him and asking for a signed photo he replied in fact when I wrote back to thank him he sent me a further letter to tell me he was going to appearing a chat show here in Ireland. A true gentleman may he rest in peace

The character of “unlucky in love” Fred was a brilliant Coronation Street creation and the highly dramatically skilled John played the role to perfection.
He can currently be seen in episodes from 2005 on ITV3.
