Oh yes, you're right again. Mind you, Dominque's songs were all quite old, weren't they? I think music goes out of copyright after a certain amount of decades. Or it used to. Paul McCartney and Cliff Richard managed to get the law changed when it was about to be their turn. But that was just in the UK.

i haven't seen that much of the show but i've never really understood at all why it's not all on dvd at all? i mean i get the early seasons didn't sell as well because well the seasons when the show took off hasn't come out on dvd yet we all know once those come out they will no doubt be selling them like hotcakes to use an old term

I can't see it happening now. Its been nearly 30 years since the show ended, so they kind of missed the boat. I remember the UltimateDallas website was very instrumental in the release of Dallas on DVD all those years ago. But Knots Landing never seemed to have the same passion from its fanbase, not on that scale anyway. I think that was also demonstrated in the sales of season 1 and 2. Even though the show really took off after that, I still wonder if season 3 onwards would have a made a huge difference to sales anyway.

It's weird with Dallas, despite how rubbish it became people still purchased the DVD's. Perhaps it was it's global success.
Whereas Knots and Falcon Crest were afternoon shows in the UK, not sure about elsewhere.

It's so annoying. I wonder who is causing the stalemate. Sounds like they tried but someone is causing a problem or its really complicated. Just remove the songs or use CGI (Ciji i )

I wonder if these same issues stop it being streamed as well.

What songs would cost so much? Maybe I'm just out the loop but the only songs I ever actually knew was the one used over the end credits when Val bumped her head and Karen's Christmas song.

Surely they were not global hits, how much is the going rate for a song nobody knows from the 1980's?

FALCON CREST and KNOTS both suddenly starting using a lot of Motown hits in the mid to late 80s. It made me wonder if Motown and Lorimar had some sort of licensing arrangement back then.

I remember they also used a Carpenters song in a scene with Paige, I can't recall the exact scene , I only remember it because I felt she was too contemporary to have a Carpenters song playing in her scene.

Later on, Danny ran down Pat to the sound of 'You are So Beautiful' by Joe Cocker and she was rushed into hospital while 'Ain't That a Shame' by Fats Domino played over the top.

'We've Only Just Begun'. But it's the only time KNOTS used a fake soundalike. Richard Carpenters is famously protective of the Carpenters' songs. He had Todd Haynes' film Superstar - a biopic about Karen in which she's played by a barbie doll - banned because of it. Apparently, it's genuinely brilliant.

i think with Dallas they liked some characters or they want them all on dvd. as for me? i haven't seen all of Dallas but i want the entire show on dvd even the lesser ones.

much like if they put anymore knots landing out and i knew they were gonna maybe do a season 4 i'd buy them all on dvd if i got into the show for me season 1 was a meh season i haven't watched that many episodes of season 2 to be fair so i haven't really got into the show quite yet cause at least in seasons 1 and at the start of season 2 anyways it's for me hard to get into but i don't find it awful by any means.

Thank you. So it is all potentially rather complicated.

But I guess at the time the use of music in that way was them moving with with times. I really liked it when they did the music over the Gary and Val stills when she hit her head. The kind of thing that happens when a character dies. I think at that point I knew she left the show at some point and assumed that was it.

well if Miami Vice and Wonder years ended up on dvd for those same reasons than they can make a deal for her singing those songs which were cover songs and not the actual music. that may help? i dunno how that works to be honest

On the Stars in the House reunion David Jacobs flatly stated that music rights had nothing to do with it so I don't know who to believe.

different rules seem to apply to different recordings.

For example, there are rights issues involving the Doors (at least in the UK) which is why the repeat of a 1991 episode of Top of the Pops on BBC4 tonight had to be cut to remove a video of 'Light My Fire'.

you also forgot about the beatles in their (1965) story The Chase at the start of it there's a video the guys and in the USA edition the dvd is cut cause they could not get the rights to the music but in the UK however they were able to get the rights go figure, furthermore one later on during the Jon Pertwee Era there was a Fleetwood Mac song Circa (1970) in Pertwee's 1st season after looking it up it was either Terror of the Auton's from Season 8 or Season 7's Spearhead from Space it as Mac's (1969) Classic and it was shot in (1969) i believe so the song was current their (1969) song Oh well anyways when it first hit video that song was cut

but about a decade later in i think (2011) they were able to obtain rights and so in the UK and in the US as well and prolly the rest of the world too that song was put back in. so it does work out sometimes.

Queer as Folk (US) was released in BR/HD quality on Netflix and it was no joy to revisit. Maybe 80% of the original music is gone. It was also discussed for the DVD quality on Netflix eight years ago.

The main offenders are shows that aired prior to the advent of streaming services like Netflix; Scrubs, Queer As Folk and even Charmed have all be well noted by fans. In most cases it seems that the original music has been replaced with “knock offs”, which aren’t much more than a sonic nod to what was there before. Reddit hosts a number of discussions around this topic, where the general consensus is annoyance, and confusion.

Particularly in the case of QAF, with redditors claiming the show’s original music as an inextricable part of it.

You can't replace Sigur Rós with elevator music but they did. Horrible. Worse than Debbie's wig. Almost every episode has at least one scene in the Babylon club where the music was essential. As if anyone would dance to the generic replacement crap that sounds like a ringtone for mobile phones.

WKRP in Cincinnati had the same problem but those music rights were worked out. Has to be legal reasons why KNOTS is not out, but has to be more since the first two seasons are out.. stream those! Although the girls getting menaced by a biker gang on the beach with Joan Van Ark screaming her head off is nothing to be seen again.

Smallville and THE OC had artist music on their shows constantly, but they likely prepared for it as those shows are all out on bluray.

It will ruin the atmosphere and the flow of some scenes but if that's really the ONLY way to make good quality copies of Knots available to the public then I wouldn't object to some editing. After all, it's a soap not a musical.

EXACTLY! If viewers know why there is a glitch/skip/muted moment, KL fans would be okay with it. I know I would! I have wanted to see the old shows for years and years.

It's been an awkward myth for years that it had to do with music rights. To the best of my knowledge, there is no truth in it at all. Lorimar's contracts did include the right to release the show on home video, and DVDs or any other media are nothing else, but updated versions of the same sort of distribution, so the alleged music rights issue is not a legal issue at all. Otherwise, WB would not have made an attempt to release the show in the first place.

The simple and unfortunate truth is that seasons 1 and 2 had rather poor sales both in the U.S. as well as in the few territories of their very limited international distribution. "Knots Landing" was quite successful during its original run in the U.S., but it never had the same international success like "Dallas" or "Falcon Crest".
