During the time I've been on the forum the grace period for you to go back and edit your post without it being publicised has varied over the years. I get why there needs to be a limit on this but now we don't get any at all.

I suppose it doesn't matter too much but the older I get the more mistakes I make and I don't always spot them on one re-read. Couldn't we have 30 mins at least?

Hmmmm. The standard editing period for members is (or should be) 12 hours these days. It used to be 1 hour, but it's increased over the years.

I'm at a loss to know why it's stopped working for you, but I've just manually edited your account to match up. Fingers crossed you can edit now.

Oh I didn't realise it was just me, thought it was for everyone. That is strange. 12 hours is more like it!
I've already edited this post so if there's nothing underneath then it's worked. Thanks Mel!

It's a strange one. Nothing appeared to have been disabled on your account, but those gremlins will get busy sometimes.

12 hours is more like it!

Definitely. I used the edit feature a lot, so like you I'd miss it if it stopped working.

Thanks Mel!

My pleasure RC. :hat:

But wait...

Oh oh, I guess not!

Oh - does this mean edit is still not working for other posts?

I'm still seeing last edited 6 mins ago under that post so I guess you're not seeing it but I am. That's very odd.

I guess if I'm the only one seeing it but I am still getting the 12 hour period then that's fine.

I can see it. It's up to 16 minutes as I write.

When you edit a post, do you have other tick boxes just above the Save option? Just wondered if there's something that might prevent the "last edited" message from showing.

When I hit edit I get 'More Options' with a black background and 'Edit' with a white background. Nothing happens when I click more options so 'Edit' is my only option.

Do you remember if that's the same as you had before you lost the function?

My best guess is that the new behaviour with the message is because the account was manually changed. Trouble is there doesn't appear to be any option for me to stop it appearing. Not with a quick look round, anyway, but I can have more of a root round in the morning.

I'd be interested to know if it keeps happening for you, even after you log out and back in, for instance.

Also, I should be able to get rid of the "last edited" message in your post above, if you're happy for me to do that.

Thanks Mel for taking the time for all this.
I don't remember when this started happening tbh. I've just logged out and back in and will try editing this post and see if it's still coming up.
I think don't worry about getting rid of any of them if nobody else can see them, or put too much time into it in the morning.
Cause if nobody sees them and I still get the 12 hours like everyone else then I'm happy with that.

Thanks Mel for taking the time for all this.

You're very welcome, but I just wish it had worked more completely than it has.

The trouble is that members would still see the notification, so if we're trying to avoid that we still have that problem.

I've made a small tweak. There's a possibility it will remove your ability to edit, but if it's still there I'm hoping it will get rid of the annoying "Last edited" message. The worst case scenario from this will that you can't edit until the virtual switch is set back to what I did last night. I'll leave a note with the team of what I've done in case it needs to be undone and I'm not around.

I've edited out the "Last edited" message on your posts in this thread, so it can be done from our end at last. Until it's sorted you are very welcome to let us know of your edited posts that you'd like the message removed from, and we'll do this when one of us is around. I don't mind you PM-ing me a little list of threads/posts.

Thanks Mel. Yes it did in fact inhibit my ability to edit. I don't mind that if it's temporary but would rather be able to edit and have the notification be visible.

Incidentally, earlier I noticed in real time Gabriel Maxwell posted something then edited it and he also got the 'last edited' straight away. So it seems this is happening with some other members too.

Drat. It was a long shot but it was worth a try.

I've now changed your account settings to match the changes I made previously, so you should now be able to edit again but will probably get that annoying stamp on edited posts at the moment.

Thanks. This will help build a picture. I'm no closer to finding a setting that rectifies this, or a cause behind it. The next week or so is going to be quite busy for me, but I'll still be dropping by and will put my thinking cap on about which direction to go next.

Thanks Mel. It's just a minor annoyance and certainly nothing urgent so no hurry.

BTW I noticed this happen with another member earlier too, Frank Underwood I believe, so this may be a more widespread issue.
