Of course, Sky News is right wing, and Douglas Murray is an elitest, but......

But the Just Stop Oil protesters didn't damage any artwork, they selected their targets carefully so any that were involved in their protests were protected behind a sheet of glass or Perspex. They want to highlight an important issue not damage important pieces of art which would be offensive. The fact that more people are talking about climate change as a result of their actions indicates that their protests have been effective.

These individuals are vandals, pure and simple. They are dishonoring the people who are using peaceful, rational LEGAL
methods with regard to climate issues. Anyone else can claim moral high ground for similar illegal actions if these criminals are not held accountable. Laws apply to everyone, regardless of ideology. These vandals are self-righteous, arrogant, obnoxious, self-entitled criminals - they are defacing art (at least temporarily) and intruding on people (who presumably paid to enter the museums) who have a right to peaceably enjoy these works.
They have no right to force their beliefs on others, especially in this way. They should be held accountable by the legal systems of the various countries to the fullest extent.

The politics of Sky News or this Murray gentleman are irrelevant. What matters is that they are reporting criminal behavior.
This is the behavior of anarchists, and that is unacceptable, let alone illegal

Just Stop Oil would say that they caused no real damage unlike climate change which is not only causing real damage, it's killing people. They expect to be punished but they think it's worth it because of the urgency of highlighting the cause they support.

Only this week the UN said that inaction of addressing the issue of climate change has meant that it is now impossible to achieve the target of preventing average temperatures from rising by more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. People should be appalled by the potential damage that could be done to great works of art but they should be even more appalled by the damage that is being done to our planet. Sadly they are not.

That does not justify their actions

I agree it's not the most constructive way to protest, but if they're not actually harming the paintings.....
Wow, I think you make a lot of good points in other posts, but this behavior ca not be enabled and there must be accountability

I'm more concerned about the irreparable damage that is being done to the planet than I am about some soup being thrown against a sheet of glass.
You are deflecting and using logical fallacies. Climate issues do not justify criminal behavior. The actions of these vandals will likely make people less sympathetic to climate change because of their self-righteous, destructive actions that interfere with people's right to enjoy the art experience. I suppose you just want the last word.. OK

Climate change is an urgent matter, but vandalism becomes the headline here. Climate activists aren't taken seriously as it is. Think Greta Thunberg.

On top of that, politicians are in bed with the fossil fuel industry. That's not going to change. All we can hope for are a few stop gap measures.

I still hold on to my idealism, but age has also made me a realist. The world I want can never be reconciled with the world we unfortunately live in.

"Protests" like this are tantrums, and about as productive. The only outcome here is going to be tighter security at museums, and works of art behind plexiglass.
Completely Agree

Because of these actions, law enforcement resources that can be directed in more urgent situations are less available

People who want to enjoy a pleasant experience (and paid for the privilege) are being disrespected.

Tantrum is a good word. More productive uses would include organizing community cleanups, which would inspire others

to do so. I guess there is no press coverage or notoriety for that direction

The saddest outcome is that such actions will make people less agreeable to environmental concerns

Curious. China, India and Russia are major polluters. Will these people stage similar "protests" in those countries

and accept accountability from the legal process in those countries?

At the risk of being cynical, if such climate change policies become more profitable for the elites, those changes will take place. However, don't expect any savings to find its way to the populace. There will be the usual avarice and price hikes. There may be any number of other
unforeseen policies but that is a topic for another day

Absolutely. It's like what George Carlin said about homelessness. If the elites could have gotten rich off of it, it would have been solved years ago.

I also agree with what you said in your previous post about there being more productive ways to bring attention to climate change.

Agree - the rent a mob crowd being even more annoying and just getting peoples backs up even more

Most people do take Climate change seriously and "do their bit" but as someone who has travelled widely in Asia, tell it to China, India, Vietnam etc, thats where we need to start - and until they change their ways and take it seriously, glueing your self to the M40 aint going to do a lot except P*** off people doing an honest days work of trying to go to or from their work and get from A to B

I do like the fact that in germany when the "Protesters" glued themselves to the floor of a VW show room, the staff turned off the heating, lights and went home"!
That made me smile

Agree. Good for the staff in Germany!

You are correct about China, India, Vietnam etc. and their pollution levels. Reality is that these countries appear to have little to no incentive and/or will to change. And will these "protesters", who are vandals, be willing to go to these countries and
accept accountability for their actions under the laws and legal systems of these nations?

These "protesters" are not only vandals, they are disturbing people, using up law enforcement resources that are needed elsewhere more urgently and angering good people who would be more supportive of legal, rational approaches like organizing community clean-ups.

I'm sure this opinion is shared by many but it is not supported by the data.

This isn't a problem created in Asia but one caused mostly by western countries as this chart shows.

We are not doing anywhere near enough and could be doing a lot more.

Why aren't we taxing fossil fuels more and encouraging more renewable sources of energy? Why are people taking multiple international holidays? Why are we still eating so much meat? If Western governments were doing more to deal with these issues Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion wouldn't need to protest. It's because people incorrectly want to blame it all on Asia and the general lack of understanding of the true problem is why the protests have become necessary.

Why would Canada be so high? The American military is apparently the biggest culprit.

The USA has a significantly larger population so emissions per capita average out as a smaller amount when compared with Canada.
