Yes, the show proved it still had an audience. Without Roseanne I’ve never been able to watch The Connors really. Love her or hate her it’s one of the great sitcom characters.
I am disappointed that the cast didn't defend her. Like Roseanne or not, the cast has enjoyed great careers as a result of
being on her show

I still think it’s a shame that the reboot only lasted one season.

The revival was surprisingly strong, a rare instance of a show coming back and being almost as good as the original. I had originally thought the ensemble would be strong enough to survive without her -- and I guess it did, since the show is still going, but I found it unwatchable without Roseanne. Adding Katy Sagal as Dan's new love interest was an inspired choice though.

season 6 had the best version of the theme song tho

Personally I don’t think it ever really jumped the shark. They started going for more broad humor as the show went on and it didn’t always work - I’m looking at you, Gilligan’s Island episode and Rambo episode. But sometimes it did (for example, I love the That’s Our Rosey episode.)

I still think it’s a shame that the reboot only lasted one season. Roseanne definitely poked the bear. I think she was trying to self-sabotage. But let’s be honest: what she said was not racist. Stupid, but not racist.

It’s a shame what she has become now. I try to avoid the stuff she does now but when I’ve seen clips of it, i don’t think she even really enjoys what she’s doing. I think she’s just performing for the only people who will still have her. But it’s such angry material; it’s not the cutting slice of life satire that made her one of the greats in the first place.

when I look at what she does now, it honestly makes me sad for her, and sad for us that one of the greats is still alive but she has to live out the rest of her days doing political rallies instead of comedy. I really think what happened deeply deeply hurt her and she’ll probably never recover from it. It’s sad. For political reasons, we won’t get a really unbiased look at her now, but I hope we do someday after she dies, because she really is a fascinating (and incredibly talented, and incredibly psychotic, and incredibly tragic) person to me.

I love everything you wrote and totally agree but only want to comment on the amazing Roseanne openings. That was another great thing about the show. The music, the kitchen dining table family/friends set up, the iconic Roseanne laugh. I think they changed it every 2 seasons or so, as the kids grew and Roseanne transformed. :D

Season 6 intro was unique because the music was a bit of a departure, it was less country and more rock with the guitar and drums dominating. But then they changed it somehow during the season, there were also several versions of it, with and without Becky, shorter and longer etc.

I thought so, too. But I still found myself wandering away from it over the last six years -- fairly quickly, actually.

I enjoyed the revival for a while, but it grew tiresome after a while. Of course, that's the same way I felt about the original. The first couple of seasons were hilarious, but then it just seemed to get lost - like everything was an inside joke that the audience wasn't in on.

I loved the idea of them doing the revival at first. Roseanne was always one of my favorite sitcom characters but once it premiered I became bored with it rather quickly. Not that I expected it to but it just didn’t have the feel of the original for me. Once Rosie was gone from the show I lost all interest.

It’s my least favourite version of the them tune . I think it’s cheesy and over the top. It also sounds dated (and did at the time) compared to the original version and luckily the versions which came after.
I wonder if they considered it a mistake as it seemed to get replaced fairly quickly.

It was an ugly situation all around. I understood why, in this environment, they couldn’t stand by her. Nonetheless, Sara Gilbert in particular talked way more trash about Roseanne than was necessary. She showed her true colors there.

I kind of believed Roseanne when she said she thought Valeria Jarrett was caucasian (or as Barr phrased it, "I thought the fuckin' bitch was white!!"). And when the only ex she doesn't speak to, Tom Arnold, immediately jumped on the bandwagon to claim Roseanne routinely used the N-word around the house, I was on Roseanne's side.

Mostly.

And she could have vindictively prevented THE CONNERS from proceeding without her. But she didn't.

Was Arnold lying? Well, who really knows....?

Honestly, I don't know if it matters whether or not Arnold was lying. I suspect he was. Having said that, Roseanne's own reaction to the controversy didn't do her any favors. In fact, she STILL isn't doing herself any favors. I read an interview with her a few days ago and she sounded absolutely unhinged. Maybe she was joking about the crazy stuff coming out of her mouth, but it sure is hard to tell.

I’ve always liked her but in a way she has always been her own worst enemy at times. I remember when she sang the Star spangled Banner that time and made a joke out of it that most people did not appreciate. The following season she walks into the opening scene saying something to the effect of “I just feel like singing this morning.” Unfortunately that’s Roseanne.

Martin Mull has been in SO MANY things. Never as the star, but he always managed to steal the scene in whatever he was in. He had such an amazing career and was a brilliant actor. Even though he’s been in so many things, Roseanne is what I remember him for the most. He’ll be missed.

Maybe it isn't the right time, as I'm just getting to Martin Mull's ROSEANNE episodes and the actor just passed, but I'm not a big fan of him or his character Leon. I thought the character worked alright in small doses, but I felt he was overused as time lingered. I have the same feeling about Leon as I do about Anthony (Meshach Taylor) on DESIGNING WOMEN. They don't work, at least not for me, long-term.

Oh, FERNWOOD TONIGHT, we barely knew ye.

Well, yeah. I mean, loose-lipped, shoot-from-the-hip Roseanne was always part of her brand. She's never denied her mental health problems -- in fact, it's a big part of that brand.

She's genuinely insightful, but terribly off-the-cuff. But that's part of being a true diva: you must be willing to sacrifice career and a rolling income in order to be so.. Has she killed a husband yet? I'd recommend starting with Tom.

That said, I knew in 1992 that she was lying when she went on the era's talk shows and claimed her family had molested her as a child (just as I immediately knew Mia Farrow was lying). Roseanne had become a powerful icon, and this was her chance to get revenge on the people who'd committed her to an asylum as a teen... The difference is, Farrow is sociopathically unrepentant; while Roseanne Barr -- still whacky -- came clean twenty years later, publicly admitted her story was a lie ("I wanted to drop a bomb on my family") and hedged a wee bit by attributing her earlier allegations to pharmacological issues and therapist-inspired "false-memory-syndrome" which was all-the-rage in the early-'90s. Barr also later said that the false accusations were "probably the worst thing I ever did" and that she felt the need to clear the air so she "won't go to hell."

So, y'know, she's trying.

Have I already said all this crap before? I guess I should re-read the thread before I post.

Always thought Martin did a nice job as Leon. Watching him and Rosie trade zingers back and forth was always fun. The episode when Dan invites him to the poker game and Rosie warns him not to let Leon look in the fridge is a classic. Of course Leon does get up to get something from the fridge and all he sees is food that Rosie took from Rodbell’s. Dan realizes he’s messed up but once Leon says “and just like my refrigerator at home” before closing the door you knew this guy was okay.

I might’ve changed my mind and decided the season 9 theme is the worst. I wonder why they decided to add lyrics?!
It also seems surprising they properly added Sarah to the credits only to have her not do anything of note!

I really didn’t mind the lyrics being used at this point. It was time for something different but looking back on it I do prefer the opening without the lyrics.
