I thought the adding of the lyrics was a little odd. I mean, did the song always have them, or were they newly written?

Someday I will properly compose my thoughts and write “In Defense of Roseanne Season 9.”

I actually unironically like almost everything about season 9 of Roseanne - and not just to be contrarian. Except the Rambo episode. That was just bad.

I'm not sure unironic will work around here but, sure, share your insights with us!

As I've said, I don't mind the Conners winning the lottery particularly, but they needed to both go further with it and yet not as far as they did... And having it be a dream in the end wasn't a good idea.

Like Angelica Nero, flawed though it may be, just own it!

I didn't watch the show much, but I find your idea interesting.
Season 9 is generally not well regarded, I understand.
However, Roseanne did have a good idea, IMHO.
It could explore how wealth changes people.
Since it was the final season, and clearly out of continuity,
the show could take more chances with stories.
Maybe it didn't work as well as it could have, but at least it was
not a rehash of older material, or a tired approach to an aging series.

I look forward to your viewpoint

I just watched Pampered to a Pulp. Obviously it’s not your typical Roseanne episode as it only featured Roseanne and Jackie, and it felt more like a series of sketches rather than a sitcom but it actually made me laugh a fair bit.
I think my problem so far with season 9 has been they’ve had this massive life changing event happen to the family yet the status quo hasn’t been changed. Why would they continue to work in the restaurant and not just sell it to Leon? Why are they still living in the house?
Also less said about the Prince of Moldavia thinking Jackie is his Grace Kelly the better!
I would’ve liked them to explore how the wealth changed everyone. DJ says he’s more popular now but that seems to be it? Let’s explore that with him. Beckys getting some money to go to college so let’s see that? How would that impact her relationship with Mark?
It all just feels very poorly thought out.

Unfortunately Becky is reduced to a glorified extra by season 9. As much as I enjoyed the years of switching Becky jokes, it really took its toll on the character.

I might’ve changed my mind and decided the season 9 theme is the worst. I wonder why they decided to add lyrics?!
It also seems surprising they properly added Sarah to the credits only to have her not do anything of note!
It’s interesting because in many ways the show has aged like fine wine. The things she got criticized for in the 90s like having gay characters is today just an expected part of TV shows (or so I’ve read; I actually don’t watch anything current.) But season 9 - the season where she got the money - is extremely dated and extremely of its era mid-to-late 90s. And the theme song is only one part of that.

Just watched Roseambo and whilst it wasn’t a very good episode, one thing it made me realise is how much I’ve enjoyed Mark/Glenn Quinn during this watch-through .

Mark is often treated as the butt of the joke and is supposed to be holding Becky back but for the most part just wants to provide for his wife who he loves. I appreciated the episode where Dan told David off for getting at Mark as he’s trying his best which is all we can do. David looking down his nose at his older brother really began to grate.

Glenn Quinn isn’t given much to work with but what he does get he delivers well. It’s a very sitcom cliche “dumb” character role but he still gives Mark depth so he feels a bit more three dimensional. It’s a shame he died so young, it would be interesting to know what they would’ve done with Mark in the revival series.

Glenn Quinn (RIP) definitely got more to do in season 9 and rose to the occasion - it was pure camp, but I also love him in the episode where he and Jackie go to a women’s wrestling match together and he tells DJ on a pay phone where to find Dan’s condoms.

I was never the biggest fan of the Mark character to be honest. I don’t know, he just kind of got on my nerves most of the time. I always thought he and Becky seemed a little mismatched. Very sad that the actor died so young though.

One episode I think of (it's in season five, I believe) is where Roseanne and Jackie's dad dies. The bit with Laurie Metcalf on the phone with their apparently near-deaf aunt is hysterical. I never tire of that scene.

Quite possibly the single best scene in sitcom history. There’s no way I can watch that without laughing til this day. How they did that in front of an audience and kept straight faces is beyond me.
That particular episode was named "Wait Till Your Father Gets Home". Roseanne and Metcalf both submitted it as their Emmy tape for 1993, and both won Emmys on the basis of that episode (Roseanne' s only one, although Metcalf won another as well)

That particular episode was written by Amy Sherman(-Palladino) who would later create Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

And deservedly so in my opinion. Even without the hilarious phone call scene that’s one of the best episodes of the entire series.

“Ask about his frequent flyer miles.”

“Will he be coming down the conveyor belt with all the luggage?”

I don’t know what makes me laugh more, those two lines themselves or the actual conversation between Jackie and Auntie Barbara.

This one does it for me! :D
Having watched that scene more times now than I can count I’m becoming very partial to “I’m saving my best jokes for the funeral.”

Of course then there’s this.........

Jackie: “I’m supposed to be in mourning.”

Roseanne: “Then wear a veil while you do it.”

I’ve honestly never seen that many great one liners in the same scene before.
