CLOSER - With Fallon (Elizabeth Gillies) occupied by her OnlyFans page, Liam (Adam Huber) is left feeling neglected and wondering if he's even in this episode. Fallon and Alexis (Elaine Hendrix) are at odds once again with Alexis demanding she be given the chance to sing an 80s power ballad for a change. Meanwhile, Senator North (guest star Kevin Kilner) continues to be an opposition to Blake's (Grant Show) Tik Tok mukbang videos so Blake takes matters into his own hands, after receiving advice from an unexpected source: guest star Nikocado Avocado. Dominique (Michael Michele) tries her hand at cooking methamphetamine and bonds with Cristal (Daniella Alonso) in the process. The two later have a falling out when they can't agree on a name for their business, Cristal wants to call it "Cristal Meth" but Dominique doesn't get the reference. Consequences from Culhane (Robert C. Riley) and Sam's (Rafael de la Fuente) actions, painting and wallpapering the nightclub themselves, lead to an unexpected outcome: they wallpaper over the doors and can't get out. Adam (Sam Underwood) is left in disbelief and tells the two they have some "splainin' to do". Also starring Alan Dale because he's still under contract and has to appear whether he wants to or not. The episode was written by Katrina Cabrera Ortega and directed by Heather Tom (#415). Original airdate 8/20/2021.

Fallon's trying to launch FSN, the Fallon Shopping Network as part of Fallon Unlimited. Her plan involves buying a building to house the studios which will also have a luxurious penthouse for her to offer (as an incentive) to some prestigious woman named Claudette who will hopefully head up the channel. She finds there is a "competing offer"---from Alexis. She wants the PH because of the high-profile location: "I could meet your next stepfather here!" The two engage in a dirty-tricks campaign to get the upper hand in the sale of the property. Fallon later notes that the location has views of both Fallon's office and "Adam's hospital". Alexis could "see" her kids even if they won't talk to her.

Cristal's hosting a fundraiser for that clinic she started last season and Dominique pesters her to wear one of the dresses from Dom's fashion line. Cristal gently rebuffs her efforts, since the dress Dom offers is kind of dull. She wants "more shoulders, more sequins". Liam, of all people, gives Dom a pep talk, since people told him he ought not go into investigative reporting but he refused to give up. Dominique stays up all night sewing on sequins (using Jeanette as the mannequin) and it looks a LOT nicer. Liam is feeling neglected as Fallon does all her business-stuff, so he needed someone else to talk to.

Blake is bothered because Senator North has sandbagged Blake's plans for an airport, but Sam shows up wanting Blake's advice on dealing with Leo, who has even barged in to take the suite at the top of the hotel to "make it the base of his operations". Sam doesn't tell Blake the "real" story of what is going on; they just have some fluffy banter. After another, more vague conversation with Adam, S&C seem to think that Leo needs to meet with a "small electrocution". They're not out to kill him--they just want to get him away from the job site long enough to finish planting listening/video devices to gather evidence. A few youtube videos later and Sam is a regular Mr. Sparky the electrician, and Leo is flat on his back in the hospital. But he wakes up and tells S&C they're going to "go for a ride" once he's out of the hospital.

They tell Adam about their quandary. Leo promptly goes "Code Blue" and Adam pauses a little too long with the electro-shock machine paddles in his hands. When Adam drops by to let S&C know the "bad news"---that Leo is DEAD--Adam has that disconcerting, weird look in his eyes that we used to see all the time. S&C have about ten seconds of regret, but then realize it was a kill-or-be-killed situation.

Blake is unsure of how to proceed against Senator North, at least until Anders drops in to point out Senator North has to have some dirt out there. The dirt (an illegitimate kid) gets the Senator to blink. In fact, it gets him to resign!

Cristal still doesn't want the (improved) dress, but moreover she doesn't want to have an entire ballroom of people giving her the "pity face". Dominique tells her that no one thinks she's weak. They end up eating pizza and drinking champagne rather than going to the ball. They say it's almost like having a sister. Blake later insists that she's still a bad-ass, then shares that Senator North has resigned. Anders is lingering in the background as Blake screws up the courage to announce to Cristal that he is going to run for the now-open Senator's seat*. She is thrilled.

Liam's sad-puppy face is seen again as Fallon continues to choose her business over her husband.

* When a US Senator resigns, the Governor appoints a replacement to complete the term. There is no election until after the term is complete, which could be anytime up to six years in the future. But this is DynastyGeorgia, so I'll overlook it.

A very enjoyable episode with quite a few references to the original series: we finally see Jeanette (I remember Anders calling for her to clean up after Celia made a mess of the master bedroom in season 1 but we've never seen her before, right?) and she seems similar in disposition to the original character; Cristal wants shoulder pads and sequins; Alexis in a penthouse; even Senator North's office being a repurposed room from the Carrington mansion. I hated it when Mile High Dynasty made so little effort at re-dressing sets to be different rooms but I'll give Peach Dynasty a pass (for now) as an homage rather than simply being cheap. I do have to note that the fleabag hotel/apartment where Kirby was found unconscious was also Dominique's mother's apartment, which was also Luella Culhane's home, which was also Michael Culhane's apartment...

The tone, the pacing, the soapiness of the show have improved greatly these past few weeks. Dare I say the show is verging on consistency? Good people doing bad deeds, bad people being vulnerable; I love the complicated greyness of it all.

Murderers! They're all murderers!
Blake (with Anders and Cristal as accomplices): Mack
Fallon: Trixie (an accident. Or was it?)
Adam: Theresa (his faux Mommy)
Claudia: Celia
Sam and Adam (with Michael as an accomplice): Leo
Am I forgetting anyone?

Where's Bo???

I hate it when characters on soaps run for US offices like that, because it's pretty much understood that they will lose, or won't hold the office long, because the producers can't break down the real life/soap life barrier that easily. "Real Senator" Blake would be out of town (DC) for large portions of the year doing all kinds of boring legislative stuff and the show can't have him largely absent from Atlanta.

I can't help but think some of the "increased soapiness" might be a product of having an episode director (Heather Tom) who literally grew up performing on daytime soaps.

I know it sounds blood-thirsty, but I was almost giddy when Adam ended up in charge of Leo's "care". I even hoped to see Adam slip Leo the same drugs he gave Steven in Paris. Now Adam's God Complex will be out of control.

They're dead-end plots because either you have to have the character leave town (Donna) or just lose (OGBlake). I guess the excitement in this plot isn't so much if Blake is going to win or not, but the fact that it's grief-driven over Anders and Blake's potentially gone I, Claudia.

Yes, and unless the show wants to spend entirely too much time creating an "alternate reality" where their politics do not reflect real-life politics, it never rings true. At least when a soap character is Mayor of their imaginary town, there is no need to connect the real world to theirs.

Let's face it: not too long ago, we had "The Sensational Blake Carrington Murder Trial," the Clarke County toxic waste spill, and the foreign intrigues with evil Moldavians causing a stir, so it's not like he's a shoo-in to win even if new scandals don't rear their ugly head(s). And you know Alexis is sure to cook up some juicy hit pieces on Blake to stir up trouble.

A Wyoming cowboy? A long lost sister? Blake's brother, Ben? A deposed and disabled monarch? At least she should get a little dog.
From the look of that place (the brief snips when Fallon was checking it out), she could accommodate the entire state of Wyoming in there. Instead of a new little dog, she could have a wandering herd of bison. Maybe Alexis's "Dex" would be a contractor she hires to remodel/renovate the cold-looking penthouse.

The more I think about it, I think the show may end up combining the characters of 'the long-lost sister' Caress and the vengeful cousin, Sable into one fabulous bitch-on-wheels, who may or may not be the relative who raised Amanda. I just can't imagine them using either of those names for this character, since they are so particular to the soaps of the 1980s. Maybe Isabelle?

They tried that with Sue Ellen in TNT Dallas. I didn't like the story one bit. And considering her past a junior journalist on their first assignment wouldn't take long to unearth Sue Ellen's past discretions. Unfit mother. Alcoholic, Numerous affairs. Time spent in a sanatorium. Shot her former husband.

"Mask? Why would people wear masks in public?" ---Fallon in the non-Covid Dynasty-verse
"Nordstrom Rack?! People actually shop there?" ----Alexis in the full-retail Dynasty-verse

I love non-Covid Dynasty....where social distancing is only determined by the size of your shoulder pads!

Yeah, it's a bit silly just like it was on the original show when they had Alexis running as a third party candidate. I wonder if they'll be allowed to mention that Blake runs for the Republicans, but I'm guessing that they might want to avoid that with the audience's likely Democratic profile (even if there isn't a chance in hell Blake is a Democrat).

In the OG Amanda's adoptive mother was Rosalind Bedford. I always thought that she should've had a slightly bigger role in season 5, becoming friends with Krystle and gossiping about Alexis's past. She could've then been a victim in the massacre to up the body count.
