[QUOTE="Ray&Donna, post: 48008, member: 42"] Ray held Donna’s hand all during the reception. Everyone there seemed to want to meet with her, to hear her ideas. Ray admitted to himself that he didn’t understand half the things they were talking about, but seeing Donna’s face light up as she moved from person to person, sharing opinions and jokes with them, was enough for him. Finally it came time for her speech. “Will you stand by me while I speak?” Donna asked him as they sat together. “I will.” He replied. And when she stepped on stage to speak, Ray was by her side, smiling the whole time. When it was over, he was the first one to applaud for her, and the last one to stop. As he led her offstage, she whispered “thank you” in his ear, and as they made their way to their seats, he said “I love you and I’m proud of you” to her. The post-meeting reception was a bit more relaxed. Ray went to talk with Clayton and Miss Ellie, who had snuck in the back to see Donna’s speech, and she went off with Dave to talk politics with some old friends. In the corner of the room, she saw Paul Morgan—Paul, who had professed his feelings for her and had saved Ray from prison. She smiled and walked over to him. “Donna.” “Paul.” She shook his hand. “You were amazing up there. Texas could really use a woman like you on the Hill.” “Thanks, I appreciate that. But Ray and I are happy together, and we’re having a baby. I think I’ve found my place for now.” “You sure? I think you’re making a big mistake.” She smiled at him. “Paul, maybe someday, but right now I can’t imagine myself doing anything like that. I need to be with Ray. Maybe when our baby is older I can do that—but right now I don’t want to be away from home.” She looked him up and down, turned on her heel, and went back to find Dave.
