I liked him too, but I don't know how long he could have stayed because he was quite reserved and the show became increasingly flamboyant with every passing year. I do think that killing him off was far too drastic.
Had Gus not died in the gas explosion he probably would have been caught up in the murky cartel goings on and been killed off, sooner rather than later. As sad and barbaric as it would've been. They of course would've covered their tracks. He had an important part in season one; as the jolly good fellow, vineyard manager and Chase's right hand man.
Gus and Chase study the 50 acre harvest.
Julia is having a glass of red wine, in the kitchen of the Gioberti castle. There is a party happening and she is in the company of Gus; (a scene from season 1, 1981 - '82):
Julia takes another taste of the wine.
Gus: "What do you think?"
Julia: "It's interesting! I'm surprised. I had no idea that uncle Jason had a private wine reserve."
Gus: "He did make that much."
Julia: "Hmm. It's a shame."
Julia then looks at the red wine bottle and says: "Tell me about this label? It looks so primitive."
Gus: "He designed it himself. I think he was trying to say something."
Julia laughs: "He certainly didn't want any part of Falcon Crest, did he?"
She continues: "I guess no one was as close to him than you."
Gus: "He would only let me so close. Then he would stare, as if he never seen me. I think I knew he was going to die. I still don't know how it really happened?"
Julia: "He was drunk. He drove his truck, off a cliff."
Gus: "So everyone says!"
Julia looks into his face: "So everyone says!"
She then walks into the living room, leaving Gus glancing at Jason's wine produce.
