And also a bit camp!
This too. In the best possible way.

I think it worked when it was new and fresh, but gimmickry usually doesn't age very well.

Absolutely. Although to give it its due, the gimmickry was necessary to reinvigorate a genre which had become lazy and lost its way.

For those who like their slashers with a bit more oomph

Oh my. Tom Savini's team were very in demand in the early Eighties, weren't they? Some of these were almost enough to make one swoon. The homage to Psycho was... interesting.

There's an Italian movie from 1987 that I find really good, especially for its time : Stage Fright
Very, very good 80's slasher, underrated. I highly recommend it if you love horror movies from this era.

Here's a review of it :

Stagefright (1987): One of the Greatest Slasher Movies?

Good news : if you want to see it, the full movie (in English) is available on YouTube :

I’ve always been intrigued by the slasher movies genre but the truth is I’ve never been good with this stuff. I am the type that gets nightmares when I watch these types of movies LOL!! So unfortunately I missed out on seeing most of these growing up.

So BRING IT ON is being rebranded as a slasher film? That might be interesting to see once.

- Loved all the Scream series, even if I loved the first 2 better.
- I know what you did last summer but ONLY the first one. Maybe because I really liked SMG & Ryan Philippe...
- Halloween for sure. Also liked H2018 & Halloween Kills (a bit less than H2018).
I never was a fan of Friday the 13th or Freddy... Maybe because I was fascinated by Mike Myers and, in my opinion, no other slasher came close :D

I second that recommendation. They’re fun—particularly season 3, and I think I enjoy that series more than American Horror Story.
At long last I got the opportunity to watch the fourth season, hip hip hurrah.
Gosh, I didn't remember these are 8 (!) episodes per series, seems a little excessive for a slasher whodunit but somehow it doesn't affect the pace of the story in a negative way, and like the previous series it was very well written and performed.
I'm not sure how it compares to those first three series but I got the impression that SLASHER - Flesh & Blood is more campy in tone but perhaps it was done with the knowledge that the "And Then There Were None" narrative has been done to death. But never as gruesomely lethal as this Canadian anthology series.

Some parts me laugh out loud, especially adopted daughter Aprha and her bizarre antics.
Dr. Thrin is over the top, like a 1960s Batman villainess, and David Cronenberg can't act but that only made it funnier to watch.
Parody or not, the creators of this series take it seriously enough to make it a genuine slasher, as opposed to American Horror Story that usually starts with a good premise and then after a few episodes it nosedives into kitsch vignettes that takes it further and further away from the original plot.

Such a shame that these great series are hidden in an obscure streaming service and it also becomes increasingly unlikely that streaming originals will get the home-video treatment because that kinda defies the purpose of streaming and subscriptions.
But I hope they're kind enough to consider their international fans and make series 5 and 6 available a.s.a.p.

Last night I re-watched Urban Legend and it's fine. There are some Screamisms thrown in (smart-mouthed scepticism and some knowing lines), but at its heart it's an earnest Eighties-style slasher with late-Nineties production values, which is the best of both worlds for me.

I was saddened to see that UL director Jamie Blanks died suddenly on Friday aged just 54.

The story of how he got the UL gig (retold in the linked article) is a testament to his dedication and perseverance as well as his passion for the genre. This came across strongly in his direction of UL and Valentine, and I know he also directed a couple of more recent horrors I have yet to watch. He composed scores as well, so was multi-talented.
