Star Wars

I'd say it's a documentary.
The new star wars movie is called: "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens"
and was directed by: J.J. Abrams. It was released in 2015.

Also if you haven't seen it already I can recommend it. :)

I am truly sorry to contradict Karin, but I think that this time, she is mistaken: That page is for the release next December of the next Star Wars-related movie, "Rogue One", actually a prequel to "A New Hope" (aka THE original "Star Wars" and Episode IV) and a sequel to "Revenge of the Sith" (aka Episode III).

It´s also a sort of spin-off, since this time it doesn´t revolve around the well-known characters from any of the previous or subsequent movies (though at least Darth Vader will be there!), but a "pirate"-style adventure about how a band of rebels stole the infamous maps of the Death Star (which actually came to kick off the whole saga: these plans are inside the R2D2 robot when the action began back in 1977).

Initially the concept for this movie sounded a bit lame, but I must admit that looks amazing. I also recommend you to watch "The Force Awakens". It´s an excellent movie and you don´t have to know a thing about the SW universe to enjoy it (though it helps and how!). The people designing this site made a big mistake when they listed the main cast, because those listed are playing minor characters. The cast includes such actors as Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, or Forest Whitaker. More info here:

Thanks for clearing that up for me Toni. I'll admit I am still a bit confused when it comes to Star Wars as I am yet to see the middle movies from the 1990s, which is supposed to be the prequel movies with episode I, II and III.

So well if the new movie is supposed to be between the original star wars and after episode three I won't get much of it.

It's funny I thought the next installment would be about Luke and would be after episode VII but maybe I am completely mistaken.

I am not a Star Wars Fan so I don't keep that good track. One of my best friends is a fan though so we're watching the movies together. :)

Karin, "Rogue One" is independent from Episode III too. The "spirit" of Disney when designed this new focus on the SW universe was precisely that: creating new movies with non-family characters or unseen events that could provide a good subject.

You can watch "R1" or "TFA" without knowing a thing about it, just as my generation did with the original SW. The wonder of this is that you can go backwards and see the "past" or "future" of these characters and this universe. I think that´s sort of magic and a lot of classic writers used to do that in 20th Century.

There is one in the works as a prequel to the Han Solo character, and this one will be almost 100% original (though they always include winks at the fans). There are also rumors of others devoted to Ewan McGregor´s / Alec Guinness´ character and another for a very minor one who was hardly seen but partly was pivotal for the first trilogy. As you see, it´s the sequel fever as usual, as happens with superheroes.

But there will never be a specific order to watch them because only the trilogies are strictly serialized. It´s as if you watch the whole Knots Landing and then you realize that there was a mother series called Dallas...and then you watch it. They are mostly independent though they share some characters and (supposedly and up to Bobby´s resurrection) also a common timeline, ie the same universe.

Too bad that the next movie won't pick up where the last one ended though as I was looking forward to find out what would happen next!

But it will pick up.

You're confusing yourself with the 'spin off' series. Rogue One isn't part of the original 9 films that make up the whole story.

This is how it works

Original trilogy

IV – A New Hope (1977)

V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)

Prequel trilogy

I – The Phantom Menace (1999)

II – Attack of the Clones (2002)

III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)

Sequel trilogy

VII – The Force Awakens (2015)

VIII (2017)

IX (2019)

Anthology films

Rogue One (2016)

Untitled Han Solo Anthology film (2018)

Untitled Anthology film (2020)

Ome is 150% right (as usual, tsk, tsk...). I think the success of TFA was so unexpectedly huge that they decided to release the new movies every two years alternating them with the spin-offs. I´m glad you watched TFA, it´s one of the best sequels I´ve watched, by its own merits. When I think that TNT could have done something like this with Dallas and ruined it... :r&r::brick:

Toni and Ome are correct. Disney paid billions to buy the Star Wars franchise from Lucasfilms so they are trying to milk it for as much as they can to recoup their investment. To do this they are having two streams of films: the original continuing storyline and characters and a new set of standalone stories released under the Star Wars banner but are only loosely related to the original story.

Thanks guys - I get it now. I just found it a really strange title tbh - it reads like a documentary title!! Really looking forward to this - especially because Darth is in it!!!

People are opining that this is George Lucas skewering Kathleen Kennedy (the woman credited with destroying the STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES franchises) to her face:

Kathleen Kennedy is out of the STAR WARS stuff, effective the end of the week. She says she's "proud of what we've achieved" and blames "misogyny" for her lack of popularity and "very, very small" percentage of the fans.

But look at her face -- it's all in her face:

Let's hope things get better under new leadership. Some of Disney Star Wars has been good IMO, like Andor, Rogue One, the first two seasons of The Mandalorian, and I even liked The Force Awakes but overall it's been disappointing.

I guess I have mixed feelings on the whole Disney Star Wars era. Some of it I like and some of it I really don’t care for. Two of the three movies in the last trilogy were actually quite good in my opinion while one just didn’t feel like Star Wars to me other than a few scenes here and there. Stand alone movies like Solo and Rogue One didn’t have the same impact for me but given what was happening with Carrie Fisher at the time I’ve come to appreciate Rogue for its historical significance.

"The Mandolorian and Grogu" will be the first Star Wars movie since "The Rise of Skywalker"
However, early speculation is that the movie will not be successful
How far this iconic franchise has fallen
