As one of the most lovingly devoted of Knots Fans - and taking into account Donna Mills had just left the show - I can honestly say that Sally's Friend is when I stopped watching regularly. It was insulting to us long term fans - just put Gary and Val back together for goodness sake.

The main problem with Danny was other characters needed to be dumbed down for his character to work. A psycho should not be that hard to spot at Seaview Circle after ten years of a ton of them.
I agree - it just became too ridiculous. With someone like Jill, she was clearly going progressively mad, but since she had been "nice" previously it came to reason that no one would believe she'd pull off a stunt like that and characters needed to actually be convinced she'd do something like that. With Danny, he was just basically cartoon villainy too fast and there was no reason for characters not to realise his true nature.

I bought the Danny storyline, largely on the back of one thing: that post her being attacked by Jill and then by not being believed by anyone for a while, Val was susceptible to anyone who came her any kind of positive treatment, even if it turned out to be horribly false charm. Should Karen and Mack not briefly have trusted him? Absolutely, but his problem was that he was putting his best face forward, and sociopaths can be diabolically clever. But should she have trusted Gary instead? Yes.

I noted in the past that Gary and Val remarried in episode 300, which I don't think is coincidental. That's why I think the whole brain-injury plot line was cooked up; to delay it until late in the season so it could happen in the milestone episode number. Of course, 250 episodes is also a milestone, and they could have been remarried then. Episode 250 occurs right in the middle of the Sally's Friend plotline.....

Still, I think Season 11 worked very well, even if it was Knots at its darkest. I'd definitely take it over the concurrent season 9 of Falcon Crest.

For me it was definitely Diana/Chip. You just want to yell at the screen. So my lover says they killed somebody, but it was for us. Do I think how romantic or be appalled and scared they may hurt me at some point. Hmm hard choice
I also never understood why she blamed Karen for everything, even before she went to the police. She was just so obnoxious to her.
I also thought Karen overreacted on the situation. Now I don’t have kids so I can’t say I’m an expert, but it was me and my adult kid was treating me like that I would just wash my hands of it until they were ready to treat me better.

I don't think of him as a villain who needed to be exposed for what he was or some evil masterplan.
What I got was a season-long character behaving dark and vile in a way 1980s prime time soap hadn't done before. I applaud Sam Behrens for embracing the role of this unapologetically abhorrent character who created a unique and exhilarating kind of soap chaos.

I liked "Sally's friend" as a mystery and I liked Amanda as a character but all the coincidences are a bit much.
I think a huge part of why it didn't work for me was that the well of keeping Val / Gary apart was finally running dry; the coincidences, Danny taking on the Jill reheated role, Amanda just being a singer and it just starts feeling very Knots-by-the-numbers. They've done this before, better and not made everyone look like idiots, to put it quite simply. If they had gone with Pat / Gary briefly it might've worked to keep Gary / Val apart a bit longer, or if Ben had come back to resolve that storyline, but it was time to move on at that point imho.

It might have been a situation where they did not want to 'villainize' either Pat or Frank. I think it would have been more interesting if Frank had become involved with Val, since there was an underlying taboo about black man/white woman affairs in those years that would have given their affair more dimension than your typical extra-marital affair on soaps. Perhaps the Frank/Val affair might have spurred Gary and Pat toward a reciprocal affair, though even that would have seemed a bit reactive rather than having true feeling. Either way, it would have made the Williamses acquire "enemies" on the cul-de-sac and the producers likely wanted to give them to be friends with everyone. Had the Williamses broken up over an affair with a neighbor, one or both of them would have been forced to move out (and take Julie with them), and the only reason they were so involved in the lives of the main cast was because of that address.

Why is it so important that they are together?
Let's see what happened when they did....Val got her "fascinating" brain virus and then later she disappeared for almost an entire season.
How am I, as a viewer, supposed to profit from that?

I do not always agree with every Dallas Dynasty or Falcon Crest fan but Knots fans are a mystery to me. I simply don't understand them at all.

Why is it so important they are apart?

I'm not saying they did better with storylines to keep them together, but they also didn't do better storylines to keep them apart. Maybe they should've both been written off into the sunset due to boringness!

Maybe a Val / Pat affair would've brought it into a new era?

With Julie throwing a huff and moving in with Olivia. To have an affair (after a SORAS of Julie to be clear, let's not be that controversial).

Why is it so important they are apart?
All I meant was that Knots was entertaining regardless of their marital situation.
Of course there were moments that reminded us of their Great Soap Romance but that itself was romantic enough. It doesn't necessarily have to materialise in order to make it effective.
I'd hate to watch Knots just waiting for them to get together again.

I love Val and Gary and want them ultimately to be together. However, their most interesting stories were when they were apart but still involved in each other's lives.
