Also, the theme song is ruined. It sounds like it's being played by a kazoo and a synthesizer.

Indeed-- far more was put into that seventh-season track (1985-86) than the eighth one (1986-87).

One part I do enjoy about S8 is the opening seconds, where they linger over the ocean and add in "wavy" sounds. Someone obviously wanted to re-emphasize the idea of the characters living oceanside (as the show did in the first three or four years), even in the opening titles.

Indeed-- that part's pretty dang good; the rest of the sequence pales in comparison.

I remember the first time I saw this ep 1 of season 8 - I thought my VHS tape had got stuck with the helicopter over the sea. Why wasn't it panning up to the cliffs?
In fact I would rather it had flown right up and over Palos Verdes and landed in the back yard of one of those lovely homes.

I’m watching Laura’s head spin in the season 9 intro. Who does she think she is, Maggie Gioberti?
It ruins the flow of the whole sequence. Everyone else turns their heads slowly, but she has to spin her head around as if she were Susan Sullivan. It doesn't work for her...AT ALL.

Actually, we had a lighthearted conversation a while back about the poses of the S9 opening and Laura was basically named the best of the bunch.
shaqattaq ranks Knots Landing | Forums for television shows past and present (tellytalk.net)

While I agree her "turn" is a departure from the more static poses of the others, let's face it: they'd likely already told her of their decision to write her out so the pose wasn't going to be included indefinitely--in fact, it only appeared in the 4-6 episodes in which she appeared. Like @Toni said in the original discussion, it might have felt like "take that, you bunch of jerks--you're gonna miss me when I'm gone."

Okay, maybe not. :( I mean, I cannot imagine the actors had much control of what they'd be doing in those cameo'd images. At most they might have been asked to improvise several things and the credits producer chose the ones they liked best. Given the similarly awful fate of our heroic Maggie Gioberti and how her death also signaled the creative decline of her series, maybe the credits producer knew something we didn't.

I think that’s odd too. The ocean is nice, but you only get a quick glimpse of the homes before the background goes black, unlike the intro from season 3-7.

Copied from the streaming thread as it fits better here.

I've done my best cleaning up the season 8 flute theme copy I was given and I think it's probably as good as it gets and definitely the best I've come across. There is a bit of an awkward point at the 6-7 second mark where I had to edit together the audio from the standard season 8 opening with the flute version as unfortunately the first few seconds were cut off the recording. But, this is not far off the quality that people would have had on their TVs back in 1986.

So without further ado... may I present the forbidden flute

I am in the minority here, but my favorite openings are seasons 12 & 13, both aurally and visually. This is the era I began watching CBS original broadcasts. The musical arrangements are the best of the series (hard to pick one as my favorite - they are very similar, only a slight variation of the season 12 version was introduced season 13). I've read the comments here on the visual "failings" of these new title graphics - it never seemed to bother me! To me, these openers captured the "casual" feel of Knots - a southern California seaside setting. The Dallas, Dynasty and Falcon Crest openings all seemed more "formal", perhaps stodgy, by comparison? I did not like the season 14 arrangement.

I agree that the 12-14 graphics are not a problem. I really like them although they are very 90s and haven’t aged well. I think without the coloured frames it wouldn’t look out of place today.
I especially like the different speeds everything moves at and also that it’s not as crowded. Less is more

Yeah, the overall effect is class. Maybe I like the colored frames BECAUSE they are 90s...reminds me of a fond moment in my life?
