Intresting! I thought her initial appearence in 1984 was awful, crazy over the top and terrible acting. But weirdly Im glad other people like it, makes it easier to stand.

All these shows need to tap into that grande dame guignol well on occasion. Over-the-top is not always the wrong choice. Alexis Smith was correctly cast and did a good job -- in 1984.

The problem with her 1989 return was that the show had lost its mojo, didn't know how to write it anymore, and so it became a campy, stuck-on redux thing which should never have happened. (Unless they'd gone whole hog and turned it into a STRAIT-JACKET axe-murder played completely straight).

As much as I love Barbara Eden and Susan Lucci, both of their storylines were dumb.

Many years later, Larry admitted that "the last couple of seasons weren't up to par," and Patrick said they'd "lost objectivity about what qualified as a good story."

So they knew, at least in retrospect, what had happened.

That's true, but IMO, that abortive TNT Dallas makes those last years on CBS (1989-91) come out smelling like a rose.

Oh, I wouldn't go that far. At least TNT's nuDALLAS, despite its numerous flaws, attempted to play it straight. Same for Peter Dunne's wrongheaded Dream Season.

I agree. A lot of what TNT did was good, at least in concept if not execution. It's hard to see how some of the last two original seasons went beyond the writers' room.

Although I might argue the execution was better than the concept, in terms of the narrative.

For the last two or three years of oldDALLAS, neither the concept nor the execution worked.

I am no fan of Cidre's era, but I do think that a different concept was needed, one that would retain the basic narrative while also updating it.
To some extent it worked, but over time, it began to lose its new energy. Did we really need to see Sue Ellen lapse?
Cliff sunk to new lows that disrespected his character - he could be selfish, but not to this extent
I liked Judith Light as an adversary, but Ryland never quite resonated IMHO.
