You Must Remember This

Anyone listen to the podcast, You Must Remember This? I've had it bookmarked for ages, but just started listening to it about a week ago. So far, I've listened to the seasons:
  • "Gossip Girls" -- about Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper, with a side of Sheilah Graham and Rona Barrett
  • "The Many Loves of Howard Hughes" -- the episodes on Kate Hepburn and Jane Russell were particularly good
  • Random episodes on Frances Farmer and Yvonne De Carlo
  • Halfway through "Star Wars" -- Hollywood's engagement in WWII. Episodes on Bette Davis & the Hollywood Canteen; Lombard & Gable; Hedy Lamarr; Gene Tierney; Orson Welles & Rita Hayworth
  • I can hardly wait to get to "Six Degrees of Joan Crawford"
I think it's at least as good as the video series, Be Kind Rewind, but much less heavy handed on the woke revisionism. I find the hosts' voice quite soothing, even if she hits her Ts abnormally hard (and she mangled the heck out of Faith Domergue's name).

Goddess knows it's true. I was listening recently to a BKR podcast where she and one of her friends were discussing HUSH... HUSH, SWEET CHARLTTE, one of her friend's favorite films since childhood. And before the podcast ended, the host seemed to say that all the female characters were suffering for the misdeeds of all the males, and they both seemed to agree the movie was 'racist' (because of the plantation house Bette lives in perhaps?)

I enjoy the BKR series for its topics, research and insight, but the author/host doesn't seem to realize pointing out movies made decades ago aren't going to miraculously have modern sensibilities is pointlessly obvious; but, at least, she's not of the slash-and-burn variety who thinks anything that doesn't live up to 2021 wokeness needs to be cancelled. The host of YMRT shares some of the same POVs but, at least among the dozen or so episodes I've listened to, they're infrequent and off-handed. These asides feel like a defensive maneuver to avoid herself being attacked for talking about old movies that some would consider 'problematic'.

I listened to a little of the one done on Joan Crawford, her marriage to Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and her professional career ranging from OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS up until GRAND HOTEL. I enjoyed what I got to watch so far.

I struggle with most podcasts because they're just blabber, but YMRT tells narratives. Aside from the lack of visuals, that's the biggest difference between YMRT and BKR; BRR is about analysis -- sometimes revisionist analysis -- whereas YMRT weaves stories about Hollywood lore.

Yeah, I honestly didn't think I'd like the podcasts, but I've been listening to them. I'm planning to finish "the middle years" one on Crawford. It's the one talking about her move from MGM to WB, and her career from MILDRED PIERCE up till JOHNNY GUITAR. I left off where she had just married B-actor Phil Terry.

I enjoyed the Crawford season a lot, but I'm surprised you didn't first jump into the "Dead Blondes" season (Jean, Marilyn, Jayne, among others). I haven't listened to that one yet, but figured it would be the first to catch your eye.

I like that you all know me so well. But this may surprise you... I haven't even seen that video on her channel yet. I skimmed through what she had a couple of days ago, but I don't believe I saw that video anywhere. (But you've given me something to look for.)

"Dead Blondes"; I'll probably queue this up after I'm through "Bela & Boris".

There's also an episode "How Norma Jeane Became Marilyn Monroe" as part of the "Star Wars" (WWII) series.
That's another one that I'll dive into: "How Norma Jeane Became Marilyn Monroe". I know I'll like it.

A couple of days ago I watched the episode on fact-checking HOLLYWOOD BABYLON concerning D.W. Griffith, his films BIRTH OF A NATION and INTOLERANCE, and the relationship between sister film stars Lillian and Dorothy Gish. I didn't get to finish that day, but I'm going to.

So, they've taken the You Must Remember This podcast off YouTube -- well, if it's still there, I haven't found it. Anyway, I've found the podcast's actual website, and I've been trying to get into the "Dead Blondes" series. I've listened to a little bit of her piece on Barbara Payton, but I haven't made it very far. I keep getting interrupted and then the podcast wants to start back over from the beginning. I guess I need to download Pandora, and see if I can listen to it on there.

As of now, the narrator's voice is just a little irritating. She speaks a little slow and in a tone I can't quite describe why I don't like. Funny, too, since I don't recall having these feelings when I listened to the podcasts on YouTube a few years back.

I don't recall YMRT being on Youtube. It's an audio-only podcast unlike BKRW, so would be an odd fit on a video platform.

I haven't listened to YMRT in a few years. Earlier seasons of the podcast were great, but the topics for the last few years ("erotic 90s" and directors in their twilight years) haven't interested me.

I know I originally listened to the episodes on YouTube. I never even been to their official website until just recently. I have a vivid memory of the YMRT channel having this image as their "still" while the narration played.

But, as of earlier today when I rechecked once more, the episodes are no longer on YouTube. They're exclusively through the website, or you can find them on Pandora.

Well, it's been a while since I've tried to listen to them, too. I listened to the ones on Joan Crawford a few years ago, but I didn't finish them. I'm not giving the "Dead Blondes" series a go. There's a couple others I might look at as well, but you can't ever tell with me. I might give up.
