How about a Dallas reboot?

An interesting thought. Sometimes when I view Jock Ewing youtube videos and read the comments section it's noted by a few how the world would be a better place if we had real men like Jock in it. Could a chauvinistic character work in todays world? You bet...but it's a delicate balance. We only have to look at a character like JR. Men wanted to be like him, women wanted to be with him.

Can I currently name a strong male character on a series who I admire? No. Well nothing that automatically springs to mind. I've always been curious about this male dominated side of Dallas some speak about. Surely if that was the case then it wouldn't have been as popular with women viewers, yet they were watching in droves.
It’s because even as a child I could see into the future and knew Sue Ellen would become Queen.

As long as any reboot was done seriously and not for comedic effect. It would need good writers and good actors cast in the roles.

As with any reboot it will inevitably get compared with the original show. In the case of Dallas, David Jacobs should be attached as an Executive Consultant.

The new cast would have big shoes to fill but is it possible to strike lightning with the same show twice? Well the BBC managed it with Doctor Who three times although despite the 1996 Doctor Who film being a hit in the UK it wasn't in the USA. It returned to great acclaim as a series in 2005. I would have high hopes for Dallas to be a hit if it was produced with respect for the original source material, unlike the TNT Cyntax version. :)

Soooo not interested. Dr Who, Dysentry, whatever can do what they like.

You CANNOT recreate Dallas. It isn't possible. Let's just leave it as the magic that it is. Even with actual actors (as opposed to glittery shiny reality people which is what we would get) it STILL isn't doable. And to be honest, there is absolutely no need for it.

To be honest I'd be hesitant to watch a rebooted Dallas.

I had high hopes for the TNT Dallas but that ended up leaving a bad taste in my mouth. It was anything but delicious! Toni will understand what I mean!!

If it was handled with respect and had David Jacobs on board I would be interested in watching a rebooted Dallas but only if it was done properly.

I would prefer a continuation series but I think that option has sailed now given the lacklustre ratings worldwide of the Cyntax Dallas.

The only thing I liked of the TNT Dallas was seeing Larry Hagman as JR, Patrick Duffy as Bobby and Linda Gray as Sue Ellen. I didn't like what they did to Ken Kercheval's character. Cliff was a monster! Of the newbies I really liked Jesse Metcalfe as Christopher and Josh Henderson as John Ross. Those two were very watchable.

I do think that Warner's will reboot Dallas at some point. It was a hit series which had a strong following. I can certainly understand why you wouldn't be keen to see another Dallas series usurp the original. I love the original Dallas but I'm being realistic here. Any future for Dallas itself would be as a complete reboot, the time for another continuation series I feel has passed.

However just because I'd be interested in a reboot Dallas doesn't mean I'd turn my back on the original. I'd never do that. I'm currently waiting on this guy's autograph coming and he was arguably responsible for the best years of Dallas and it was a sad day when he was ousted from the show. :(

If Warner ever decide to recreate Dallas for a group of millennials who have no idea what the original was about, I’m pretty confident that we have enough contacts here whose opinions are heavily relied on, to stop them.

I'm not sure if Dallas could work in the current Zeitgeist for me. I considered it male-driven, sometimes chauvinistic show about a family and its empire. Race and sexual preferences were not in the focus. I see it set more in the 80s (comparable to Madmen in the 60s for which I can't image in a today's version either).
In a world where Donald Trump can be elected president and even now be considered a strong contender to return, anything is possible.

Furthermore it doesn't seem that the "old" fanbase is that important anymore.
Even I have to accept that fact. I cannot imagine some top Warner Bros Executive is sitting in his high rise office thinking I'm going to create an adult contemporary drama series specifically for a fan in Australia. Any continuation I think has now been lost with the failure of TNT Dallas. If the series was developed with fans of the original series in mind who knows how well - or not - it might have faired. There is still something to be said about those original numbers in the U.S. who tuned in for the opening episode but dropped by half the following week. I'm thinking those half who didn't return were original fans.

I don’t accept we aren’t important. Even if they say it isn’t. It is and it always will be.

She can't chain herself naked to the Southfork railings! JR would seize the opportunity to sell tickets to everyone to come see her! That would be awful, she'd end up getting signed as the new Valentine girl. She wouldn't want that, would you Sarah!?! :innocent:
It’s ME getting chained, she isn’t allowed near Southfork. And I honestly couldn’t give two hoots if she chains herself by her neck and ties herself to one of the cows!

That's why the often used "dysfunctional family" does not really describe the Ewing family for me.
It sometimes feels like a family series of days long gone. The Ewing boys calling their father "Sir" and their mother "Miss". The family is dressing up for dinner which is eaten at 6 o'clock sharp, no discussion - period.
Marriages are talked through (with a few exceptions - which consequently bring problems)... and and and

I wouldn't be surprised at all if a series like "Dallas" came back one day - or in some decades (like Little house of the prairie, Highway to heaven etc.)
The concept (rich family drama, Texas setting) is timeless.

But you can't recreate magic. Dallas filled a void in the 80s. Many of you who watched it back then, can describe it better than I could. But the Zeitgeist is different now - many aspects can hardly be transported into now.

I don't think the TNT continuation has any long-term effects. A reboot which got canceled after 3 years is not the end of the world. It's a fast moving industry, but any more content with Linda Grey, Patrick Duffy, David Jacob's are obviously highly unlikely.
TNT Dallas had one major problem - it didn't attract a substantial new audience! (and not alienating old audience who watched mostly anyhow even in order to complain about or details which are noticed by few handful outside this forum only like the cattlemen's ball, Katherine dead etc.)

The new Star Wars trilogy didn't please most of the old fans, but they managed to attract new ones.

Same goes for the mission impossible franchise - hated & objected by the original cast (&fans I know) but still highly financially successful for 25 years:

Agreed. I'm curious to see how well Y:1883 (Yellowstone Prequel) is received. Also there is another series named LAND MAN from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan which is about the era of the oil boom and bust of West Texas. This one really excites me and if it lands on some streaming site I will option it for viewing.
