I remember him best as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing where he partnered dance pro, Karen Hardy.

They were a highly entertaining couple.

It's hard to describe how sad I was to hear this news. I first became aware of Bill when he presented the news on BBC News 24 which I used to watch every weekend morning early in the 2000s. I followed his career for the next 20 years and he was one of the best broadcast journalists around.

I didn't watch BBC Breakfast this morning when they made the announcement, but it must have been difficult for the current presenters to announce the breaking news while they were trying to process the death of their friend and former colleague for themselves live on air.

I'm glad BBC News have given this story the prominence that Bill deserved and it was the lead story on both the News at One and the News at Six.

It was his funeral today, sadly overshadowed by another funeral that will take place next week.

Bill was such a big fan of Wycombe Wanderers and it was a lovely tribute by the club to name part of their stadium after him. It is well deserved.
