4800 Parker Lane was used after the initial 5 episode mini series was expanded to a series. As Michael Preece explains; Michael Preece directed more episodes of Dallas than anyone. He explains how 4800 Park Lane was used for the interior. "The house at Southfork is not that big," said Preece. "It couldn't hold all the people on the series who were supposed to live there." No one knew whether the show would last, so money to build sets was scarce. "I was directing a show called The Runaways, which I thought was going to be a big hit and go on forever," he said. "Producer Leonard Katzman told me Dallas was a soap opera loosely based on the movie Giant. I thought, 'That's horrible. It's not gonna make it.'" The Runaways lasted only 11 episodes. Preece spent more than a decade with Dallas. He helmed some of the most famous episodes, including the Season 2 cliffhanger, "Who Shot J.R.?" When Season 3 opened with "Who Done It?," 360 million viewers in 57 countries watched. Everyone recognized Southfork. "By that time, the producers knew they had something good," said Preece. In L.A., interior sets were constructed on the MGM lot. "The house we built was about 10,000 square feet," he said. "It took up three stages." When the show ended in 1991, those stages were dismantled. After the cast reunited in 1996 to film War of the Ewings, those interior sets weren't available. The Casses were not interested in allowing a film crew to return and disrupt their lives. But Katzman and his location manager Nanette Farlow offered $10,000 to the Casses' favorite charity. Mrs. Cass had them send a check to the Dallas Opera Foundation. Then she unlocked her doors for the War of the Ewings crew and J.R. was back at his secret Park Lane Southfork. In 2000, the Casses sold the home to the current owners. In 2003, they had the 1939 mansion extensively remodeled. The current owners now have this property up for sale.
