Bill Webster was a lovely Coronation Street character, one who fell more into the "real" rather than "larger than life" category. The comparison with Len Fairclough is a good one, in that he was just always effortlessly believable as a normal bloke. And normality has become a rarer, more cherished quality now that soaps, in general, have become more extreme. I've also got two personal, if quite minor, memories of Peter Armitage. I remember seeing him one night in 1999 in Jimmy McGovern's powerful film Dockers on Channel 4: The very next day I was on the way to a job interview when I passed him in the street. I wanted to tell him how good he'd been the night before, but I was too chicken. The job interview turned out to be life-changing and so I've always sort of associated him with that. Then years later, I ended up sharing a dressing room with him on Doctors. He was very chatty -- in fact, I couldn't get a word in. I did manage to say how much I'd liked him with Tyrone's Molly's Aunty Pam on Corrie and he said she'd been his favourite love interest on the show. I've just read that that Doctors episode was his last ever TV job so I feel even more fortunate for having run into him then.
