That's why booster shots are so important. Many people would have become fully vaccinated more than half a year ago so their protection is starting to wane. However, because they have been vaccinated they are less likely to take precautions such as mask wearing and social distancing which is why they are now particularly vulnerable.

Another part of the problem is that information on Covid precautions hasn't always been consistent. At various times, I've heard it said that the vaccinated both need to wear masks and don't need to wear masks. Dr. Fauci has been a big flip flopper on masks even before the vaccine was available. It almost feels like they make it up as they go.

I made the choice to get vaccinated in May. The vaccine was being pushed everywhere I went back then, but I haven't heard much information yet on the booster shot.

I totally get why it might seem like that but I think it's more of a case of the scientists responding to the latest research. Originally advice was based on knowledge of the flu virus or other SARS viruses but as more research has been done specifically on Covid-19 they have been able to update the advice.

Previously, there was inadequate research on the effectiveness of mask wearing on reducing Covid-19 spreading so it wasn't recommended. I think that was a mistake because in China they have been dealing with SARS for many years now and their people have been wearing face coverings in public spaces for some time now. However, once the research into how effective masks was to slowing Covid-19 spread the recommendation was updated. Although it might feel like flip flopping it was more of a case of responding to scientific developments.

Covid vaccines are thought to be about 90% effective after 2 doses but people's immunity wanes over time and after about 6 months it drops to around 60%. Although that is still good immunity, it does mean that inoculated people will still catch Covid. A booster programme will increase immunity back up to the 90% level but the trouble is that too many people believe they are already protected and as a result take up of booster jabs as been far less than it was for the original 2 doses.
