Coronation Street casts Brookside legend for new romance storyline​

Yes, that does say legend.

Coronation Street bosses have cast former Brookside star Simon O'Brien for a new romance storyline, Digital Spy can exclusively reveal.

The actor, best known to soap fans for playing Brookside's Damon Grant, has landed the role of Sean Tully's next love interest.

Simon started filming at Corrie two months ago, taking on the part of Weatherfield newcomer Frank Bardsley.

Frank will make his first appearance on the cobbles later this month, when he meets Sean at the Rovers Return and starts flirting with him.

Great that Simon's going to be back on-screen soon (but I really struggle to imagine him and Antony Cotton as a couple).

With this news I was hoping we might see a Damon & Debbie reunion on The Celebrity Chase soon, but I see Gillian Kearney has now left Emmerdale so perhaps not.

Brookside I watched for many years and Brookside did a lot of excellent storylines. Numerous characters were well sculpted and portrayed well on scree.

Clearly this Damon character was transient leaving no significant mark. Unlike Beth, Jimmy, Bev, Sinbad, Nicky Shandwick et cetera.

I thought he’d popped up as a contestant on X Factor about 10 years ago but when I looked online, there’s no mention of it, so I’m obviously confusing him with another ex-Brookie star. However, what I did discover is that he starred in a US sitcom with Patti LaBelle in the 90’s!

Holy cow. I had no idea, but I've just found a number of episodes of Out All Night. Damon drops in at 5:55...

The show looks pretty bad, but it seems they had some huge guest-stars for the musical numbers at the end of each show.

His character was killed off after being stabbed, it was quite a thing at the time, but wasn't in the main show, it was a one off spin off "Damon & Debbie" (I think).

He came to mind when I saw that Simon hadn’t featured on X Factor. However, it was someone older than Ray that I’m thinking of. I can’t find anything though, so I’m beginning to think that I may have just imagined this.

After leaving Brookside he presented a few home DIY shows and went into property development, he's never been on X Factor as far as I know. I'm actually surprised by his corrie role, I thought he'd moved on from acting completely.

I too can only think that you are confusing him with Ray Quinn who was the UK X Factor runner up in 2006 and played Anthony Murray in Brookside.

He also appeared on another reality show, Dancing on Ice, in 2009.
