And yet it's called DALLAS, not SOUTHFORK or THE EWINGS.When I watch Lorimar Dallas I note how the writers kept the focus solely on the Ewing's, Southfork and Ewing Oil.
So this new version felt more Dallas-y.

Falcon Crest had its cartel story in season 3, and it's one of the show's most popular seasons. Lots of crime and action and dastardly stuff. If the show had not been called or connected to Dallas it would have just been another forgotten drama people might have said they stopped watching because by the third season the focus was on something very different to what was laid out in the first season

I find new Dallas' season 3 very "Winds Of Vengeance".
@Kenny Coyote 'verbalised' my thoughts best. If the show was exactly the same as it is now, scriptwise, it wasn't called Dallas, there was no publicity connecting it to Dallas, the actors weren't returning from an existing original, there was nothing to throw back to something nostalgic, if it was just another show that aired starting June 2012, it wouldn't have reached nearly as many people and my bet is it wouldn't have been as polarising as it is now, nor as semi-successful. There was nothing stopping new people who knew nothing of the original series from watching the show, the viewing numbers weren't great though and considering they were likely made up of a considerable amount of people returning week after week out of loyalty to the original series, the show was being propped up by the popularity of the Dallas franchise. Cut the Dallas (series not city) connection completely and you're left with a show that was fine but nothing special, keep the Dallas connection and you're left with a show that people are still critiquing 6-7 years after it was cancelled, critiquing because they weren't satisfied with how the one chance to get a whole bunch of original cast members back to do a continuation of a beloved series ended up playing out. The show could have been amazing had it been placed in the hands of people who actually cared and knew something about what they were committing to, but it was disappointing because that's not what we got. If the show had not been called or connected to Dallas it would have just been another forgotten drama people might have said they stopped watching because by the third season the focus was on something very different to what was laid out in the first season, with the Dallas connection the disappointment goes deeper.
Now I'm questioning my own thoughts. Did I watch Lorimar Dallas until the bitter end out of respect, loyalty...hoping the once dominant Dallas would find its feet?It was knowing how good it had the potential to be, because we'd seen it when it was great, that kept us watching the original to the end.
This sums up perfectly what TNT Dallas was....the show was being propped up by the popularity of the Dallas franchise.

IMDb had George Pastell down as being born in 1887, making him appear to be abut eighty when he played Klieg in Doctor Who: Tomb of Cybermen. They later altered George Pastell’s birth date to 1923. But people on forums believed him to be eighty in 1967, as a result of that and complimented him on how youthful he looked for an eighty year old.Well, IMDb's certainly not infallible. I've been credited for jobs I didn't even do!
This may have been covered, but with all the weirdness and straying so much from the original series in TNT Dallas, have the writers and producers ever talked about it publicly? Do they get why a lot of fans didn’t care for it, and that they messed up?
That's my point, we knew the characters and actors and the history of the show. If it was just a show which had the same premise but no history or dedicated fanbase then the storylines alone wouldn't have kept as many people coming back to watch every week.
